Nikko - A Day Trip from Tokyo
Travel details for your day trip pleasure:
To get to Nikko you need to take the JR Tohoku Shinkansen from Tokyo or Ueno train station to Utsunomiya Station. From here transfer to a JR Nikko Line train. This trip is covered by a JR Pass (you probably have one if you are an international traveler). When you get to Nikko station you can pick up multiple maps of the area, bus routes/times, and buy your bus tickets here. The ticket I bought was the Unlimited 2 day bus ride between Nikko and Lake Chuzenji for 2000 yen ($20) as this covers the World Heritage Meguri Bus loop (for Toshogu Shrine) and up the mountain to Lake Chuzenji and Kegon Falls.
The World Heritage Bus stops right outside JR Nikko station which is easy, however to get up the mountain later you need to catch a Nikko-Chuzenjiko-Yumoto bus from the main road (Nishisando stop). You will be on the bus for 30-45 minutes up narrow and windy roads (but wow the view is amazing) and you want to get off at Lake Chuzenji.
Here is the fab website that I got most of my information from when I planned my trip:
The extra costs of the daytrip are:
1300 yen for entry to Toshogu shrine (extra for English audio headset tour)
500 yen to reach the lower viewing platform of Kegon Falls
Let me know if you have any travel tips when going to Nikko!

Free Foot baths in Japan
For those who are wondering - all of the free foot baths we visited were using natural sulfur or mineral water, heated geothermally and pumped up from the earth.
So. Ryosuke and I are in Hokkaido right now. He's working and I'm doing quite a bit of hiking with a friend. We're well out of harms way - regarding the floods and typhoons.
A week and some change ago, I went to Nikko with Kasia (from the Uwaga Pies YouTube channel). I intended to upload those videos starting today... but decided not to because of the massive flooding. For those of you who don't know, the Tochigi/Ibaraki area of Japan are suffering from massive flooding right now. It's just been on typhoon after another.
Thousands of people have evacuated and the death toll keeps rising.
When I was watching the news this morning and saw a report about the death of a young adult in Nikko, I knew I couldn't post any of the videos I recorded and edited (at least not for a week or so, until the flood waters go down).
It is bad timing. And in bad taste.
I also didn't have enough time to shoot a new video, though, so I quickly threw this video together about random foot baths Ryosuke and I found up in Utsunomiya (last month).
Check back again in 2 days for a new, regular video!
Thanks,
Grace

2019 Tenpyonooka Park Sakura Festival
Cherry Blossom Festival at Tenpyonooka Park in Shimotsuke, Utsunomiya. I experienced real hanami (traditional Japanese flower viewing) for the first time and enjoyed lots of street food. Street vendors were selling everything from yakisoba, mochi to fruits and vegetables. At this festival, many of the food vendors had tables and seating areas for customers so you didn't actually need to bring your own. Traditionally, people being their own boxed lunches and sit on blue tarps on the grown while enjoying the blooming flowers. One of the food highlights was an amazing steamed buttery potato that's famous at this festival. As you can see from the footage, its was yummy.

Nikko Winter Waterfalls - Tony in Japan #21
Last winter, I went on a small trip with some of the teachers from my school. We headed to Nikko to stay overnight at a traditional Japanese hotel with an outdoor hot spring, or onsen. We made a couple of stops at these famous waterfalls in Nikko.

Tochigi & Ibaraki - Japan Travel HIghlights
This golden week I had the pleasure of going on a 2 day trip to 2 little visited prefectures, Tochigi and Ibaraki!
We based this trip around the goal of going paragliding near Utsunomiya.
Late April is also a great time to go to both Hitachi Seaside Park to catch baby blue eyes in bloom, as well the seasonal pottery market in Mashiko city.
For those of you living in Japan, what did you get up to this Golden Week?
(for those of you overseas, it's kind of like spring break, with a few national holidays all lined up!)
Let me know if you enjoyed this style of video as well!

Day Trip to Tochigi | J-Vlog #4
On Saturday (14.09) all the exchange students and I went to Tochigi on a bus trip for the day. Tochigi is a beautiful old style Japanese town in which we took an amazing boat ride where koi swam next to us and we got to feed and get real close with them. We also visited a beautiful shrine hidden away in the mountains and had a Zazen experience where we meditated. If you didn't stay awake or your posture was off, the monk would come and smack you with a stick! It was a very unique and entertaining experience, and the landscapes on the way were absolutely beautiful.
If you like koi fish, you will love this video.
Hope you enjoyed! xx

The Cheapest Japan Travel Adventure (Seishun 18 Kippu) ???????? | 4 Prefectures in 3 Days | Rainbowholic
Hello everybody! ????In this video, I will be sharing our fun Japan travel trip last April using “Seishun 18 Kippu”. ????The Seishun 18 Kippu allows unlimited rides on local and rapid JR trains (excluding reserved seats) throughout Japan from Hokkaido in the north to Kyushu in the south. I was super excited to visit Sendai & Naruko Onsen for the cute Japanese kokeshi dolls with Aki! If you plan to visit Japan in the future, I do recommend exploring Tohoku region! Lots of yummy food, cute things (kokeshi dolls!!), and interesting local culture! ????????
????Seishun 18 Kippu information / schedule:
This ticket package (Seishun 18) includes five days worth of travel for only 2,410 yen per day (5 days = 12,050 yen). One person can enjoy the Seishun 18 for five days, or it can be split for use by up to five people. The unlimited rides also include use of the JR Miyajima Ferry for travel from the mainland to the island of Itsukushima, popularly known as Miyajima. The Seishun 18 is a great way to enjoy leisurely travel.
(Aki and I bought a 2nd-hand ticket for lower price since we only used it for 2 days. Apparently, you can buy slightly used tickets on the internet lolol. )
????Our itinerary during the 3-day backpacking trip:
* Day 1: Urawa (Saitama Prefecture), Utsunomiya (Tochigi Prefecture), Kuroiso, Fukushima (Fukushima Prefecture), Sendai (Miyagi Prefecture)
* Day 2: Sendai, Kogota, Naruko Onsen, Morioka (Iwate Prefecture)
* Day 3: Morioka, Back in Saitama Prefecture
