Travelling Colombia: Surprised By Salento
In this week's episode we're in the beautiful, Spanish colonial mountain town of Salento, Colombia. We celebrate Nick's Birthday, play a drinking game with metal disks and explosives, go for some nice hikes, enjoy a coffee plantation tour and walk around the town. We found Salento to be one of our favourite places in Colombia, if not the world!

OUR FIRST DAY IN SALENTO, COLOMBIA!
PLAZA DE BOLIVAR || MIRADOR DEL COCORA || TRYING PATACON || PLAYING TEJO
We are in Colombia!!!!!!
The closest airport to Salento is in Armenia. From there, we took a 2-hr bus ride to Salento, Colombia’s coffee region.
We stayed at Hotel El Mirador Del Cocora, and it was heaven!! We had a hot tub on our patio overlooking the mirador.
After check-in, we decided to go to the main square: Plaza Bolivar to get something to eat. Trout fish and patacóns are specialties in Salento, and a must try! They were delicious.
The city itself is charming- lots of colourful buildings and street vendors. We could see that this was a popular destination for local tourists as well.
We went back to our hotel after lunch to get some rest before we headed out in the evening to try our luck in tejo. Tejo is a game like darts except it involves gun powder and explosions. It was pretty fun.
We had a wonderful first day in Colombia. For those concerned about safety in Colombia, we found this place to be extremely safe! We walked home in the dark after playing tejo and there were no red flags. Everyone was friendly and super helpful.
Stay tuned for our next vlog as we explored Cocora Valley, visited a coffee plantation, and stayed at a neighbouring village in Quindio.

Salento, Colombia: Killer Coffee and Hiking the Cocora Valley!
Colombia is so much more than it's Caribbean coast. Head inland to Salento, in the heart of Colombia's Zona Cafeteria (or coffee region). Located near the Andes, this bright little town offers it all: coffee tours, hiking through the beautiful Cocora Valley among the famous wax palms and beautiful natural thermal springs.

The town up in the hills of Colombia, that attracts so many travellers is the beautiful place known as Salento. The center of Salento sits on a little hill and is a quaint, small plaza, with of course a church as the center piece and up the roads from Salento is the mirador that looks over the town in one direction and the Cocora Valley in the other.
Salento Colombia is known for being a beautiful, colourful town but also as the gateway to the Cocora Valley, some of Colombias most beautiful scenery. Wax palm trees, rolling hills, and lush greenery covering everything just outside of the center of Salento, in the heart of Colombia.
Having been to Colombia and travelled through Colombia so many times I had never been able to make it to Salento, but now that I am finally here, I am posting up and will be enjoying a week or so here in this beautiful town.

HIKING THE COCORA VALLEY, SALENTO, COLOMBIA
Hiking in the Cocora Valley to see the tallest palm trees in the world, the wax palms. This day hike in the Cocora Valley is the one of the best things to do when you are in Salento, Colombia.
Cocora Valley, Colombia | 5 Hour Hike
Prior to our trip, I watched a few Youtube videos for the Cocora Valley hike. I don't think any of them captured how difficult the mid-section is to hike (it may also be that we are super unfit). The Cocora Valley was one of my favourite parts of Colombia. I highly recommend checking it out if you ever visit Colombia.
We did the 5 hour hike but unfortunately missed the jeep ride to the start so we walked an extra 3 KM from the Lumre Glamping site. We hiked the circuit counter-clockwise which I think is easier. You can visit the wax palms without doing the full hike.

TALLEST Palm Trees in the WORLD - Colombia Travel Vlog Ep 6 - Cocora Valley / Salento / Armenia
Cocora Valley (valle de cocora) is a great place for any nature lover to visit. You can spend a day hiking the trails enjoying the natural environments around the mountains (the tall palm trees are just a small feature here... there's so much more incredible nature). After a nice day in nature, most people end up walking around the nearby town of Salento with many shops and restaurants for visitors.
It's a beautiful area and I highly recommend considering a trip here if you're coming to Colombia.
Thanks for showing me around, Mario!
