‘Personal friendships are so important to the Queen... they are her escape from the weight.
‘Personal friendships are so important to the Queen... they are her escape from the weight of all things royal': As Elizabeth grieves for two of her closest friends, we reveal the confidantes she cherishes.
Amid the excitement of hosting the biggest party ever held at Buckingham Palace, this has also been, ironically, one of the saddest and most poignant of weeks for the Queen.
On the one hand there was her pleasure at welcoming 1,800 guests — royal staff and their partners — to their Christmas reception in the maze of state rooms opened up for the occasion.
On the other, her distress at the loss of dearest friends as she herself approaches her 91st birthday in April.
Her week began with the funeral of her lifelong friend and closest confidante Margaret Rhodes, whose white-painted house in Windsor Great Park had been, for years, the Queen’s first port of call when she needed someone close enough to talk through private problems.
The two, who were first cousins — Mrs Rhodes’s mother was the Queen Mother’s elder sister — virtually grew up together.
Movingly, as the service ended in the Royal Chapel of All Saints in the Park, the Queen bowed her head in affection and respect towards her old friend’s coffin.
But that was not her only loss.
That very morning it emerged that another of the Queen’s friends since childhood, Lady Elizabeth Longman, widow of publisher Mark Longman, had died, aged 92.
Both Lady Elizabeth and Mrs Rhodes were bridesmaids at the Queen’s wedding to Prince Philip at Westminster Abbey in 1947.
Astonishingly, there was still further sad news for the Queen on the very day of Mrs Rhodes’s funeral.
This was the death on Monday of the Dowager Marchioness of Salisbury, 94, a valued friend and brilliant authority on British gardens.
Mollie Salisbury, who designed Prince Charles’s gardens at Highgrove, was responsible for him talking to plants, explaining: ‘It makes such a difference.’
Of course, anyone who reaches the Queen’s great age must brace themselves for such personal losses.
But as a long-standing courtier observes: ‘Being Queen is such a solitary position that personal friendships have a special significance.
'After all, how many people does the Queen know who are prepared to speak their minds freely to her?’

A useful article about Botox Injections,
What Happens When Someone Gets Botox Injections?
By Taalib Durden
Botox treatment involves injecting very small amounts of the purified toxin into the wrinkles. The effect of Botox is not permanent. The downside of Botox treatment is that it needs repeating every six months or so. Sometimes, a muscle that has been repeatedly injected eventually loses its ability to contract and doesn't need to be treated anymore. Botox was approved by FDA in USA in the year 2002 for crow's feet, frown lines and bands on the neck. The effects last anywhere from 3-6 months.
What is Botox?
It's a sterile vaccum- dried purified botulinum toxin type A, in short it's a purified protein derived from a bacteria known as clostridium.
Botox benefits
This purified form of botulinum A toxin, works wonders by stopping wrinkles where they start. As a result, Botox can keep you looking far younger than your year. Botox works on existing wrinkles and prevents them from deepening. It is most effective on wrinkles that haven't quite set -- dynamic wrinkles that appear while you're moving your face, such as when you frown. If you don't move the muscle too much, you won't form the wrinkle
Side effects of BOTOX
cosmetic doses of botox are much smaller then the therapeutic ones. Botox is best avoided on a pregnant lady though botox is not known to have any ill effects on the mother, but there may be foetal malformations which are yet to be proved. Side effects are possible: headaches, bruising, and pain at the site of injection, and in fewer than 1% of cases, drooping eyelids or eyebrows that return to their natural position within a few months or can be reversed after the use of medication. In cosmetic use, this can result in inappropriate facial expression such as drooping eyelid, double vision, uneven smile, or loss of the ability to close eyes.
BOTOX and similar products are used safely for medical uses too. BOTOX has been carefully tested through extensive clinical trials and it actually has very few side effects, particularly when compared with traditional cosmetic surgery. And, of course, the procedure is far less expensive than cosmetic surgery.

Conservation: The Salisbury Cross
An ironwork cross almost 3m high was the uppermost feature of a magnificent screen in Salisbury Cathedral, designed by G G Scott and made by Francis Skidmore, erected in about 1870. The screen was taken down in 1959 and mostly sold, but the cross survived. Its surface was rusty and corroded, but small traces of original distinctive red paint and gilding remained. Painstakingly the cross was taken apart and each piece cleaned using dry ice, then repainted and gilded. Replacement parts were made using the latest digital technology. The restored cross was reassembled and is now a dazzling highlight of the ironwork galleries.
