Explore Cabo Rojo with us!
We’re taking you to the National Wildlife Refuge of Cabo Rojo.
Our first stop is at Puerto Rico’s pink lakes - Las Salinas (Salt flats) de Puerto Rico. From there, we’ll explore El Faro Los Morrillos (The Los Morrillos Lighthouse), a historic landmark in the area of Rojo Cabo.
Not too far from there, we’ll visit the Puente de Piedra and we’ll relax at Playa Sucia or La Playuela, one of the most beautiful beaches on the west side (or oeste) of Puerto Rico.
This corner of the island quickly became one of our favorite day-trips while we lived in Boqueron. If you're in Puerto Rico, do yourself a favor and check it out!

[Wikipedia] Cabo Rojo National Wildlife Refuge
Cabo Rojo National Wildlife Refuge is located on the southwestern side of Puerto Rico in the municipio of Cabo Rojo. It was established in 1974, when 587 acres of land were obtained by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service from the Central Intelligence Agency which had operated the Caribbean Bureau of the Foreign Broadcast Information Service there for a number of years. The 1,836 acres (7.43 km2) refuge is a habitat for number of native bird species including the endangered yellow-shouldered blackbird also known as la mariquita de Puerto Rico or capitán. Many birds find their way to the refuge while migrating between North and South America.
In 1999, the National Wildlife system purchased and added to the refuge the Cabo Rojo Salt Flats, an historic salt mining enterprise located near the Los Morrillos Lighthouse. Caborrojeños Pro Salud y Ambiente, a local civic group, runs a visitor's center in the salt flats. More than 118 bird species have been recorded near the area.
The Cabo Rojo National Wildlife Refuge is administered as part of the Caribbean Islands National Wildlife complex.

Faro Los Morillos, Cabo Rojo 4K
Captured a new lighhouse here in Puerto Rico. This one is in Cabo Rojo and is one of the most beautiful areas I have visited to date while here working.
A little about Faro Los Morillos:
Located at the southwestern tip of the island of Puerto Rico, this lighthouse was constructed in 1882 in order to guide passing ships through the southeast entrance from the Caribbean Sea through the treacherous Mona Passage into the Atlantic Ocean. The lighthouse is located over a white lime cliff which is surrounded by salt water lagoons and marshes. The cliffs surrounding the lighthouse drop over 200 feet into the ocean.
Originally, the lighthouse was manned by two keepers and an engineer, who lived on the grounds with their families. In 1967 the lighthouse was renovated and its operation is currently completely automated. The structure itself has been abandoned for decades, although recent the local government as well as local civic groups, such as Caborrojeños Pro Salud y Ambiente, are pushing towards turning the old lighthouse keeper's house into a museum. The project was taken over by the municipality, an action that lost U.S. Federal government funds that had been assigned for it. The municipality took over the renovations, which, according to critics, has irrevocably damaged the historical significance of the internal structure.
