Saltdean Lido Review Opening Weekend
Wow, they couldn't have picked a hotter weekend. Had a great 2 hour session at the re-opened Saltdean Lido. There is still work to be done but it's looking great already.
Here is a short review.
We are restoring and renovating Saltdean Lido for future generations
Saltdean Lido is one of the finest remaining examples of modernist lidos in the UK. It has been saved by local residents who have set up the CIC and successfully secured a 60-year lease from Brighton & Hove City Council (the freeholders) to operate the lido site.
Our vision is to bring the building, swimming pool and grounds back into use for local residents and visitors by creating a range of all-year round vibrant amenities.
DESIGNED BY THE ARCHITECT RWH JONES, SALTDEAN LIDO IS THE ONLY GRADE II* LISTED COASTAL LIDO IN THE COUNTRY. BUILT BETWEEN 1937 AND 1938, IN ITS UNIQUE STREAMLINED DESIGN, IT ENCAPSULATES BRITAIN’S MODERNIST ASPIRATIONS AND SOCIAL CONSCIENCE FOR CREATING SEASIDE ARCHITECTURE DESIGNED FOR THE ENJOYMENT OF THE MASSES

The campaign has reached the next level of found raising and work can continue toward their target of fully restoring this historic site.

Scenes of Brighton seafront taken in 1956. We see coaches and other vehicles driving trough town. Locals and tourists walk along the promenade and look at the pier. Miniature trains ferry passengers along the beach. Cars arriving at Newhaven. Ships arrive and leave. People enjoy the swimming pool at Butlins both in B&W and colour.

Saltdean Lido Opens After 7 Year Refurb
After 7 years of refurbishment, the Saltdean Lido finally opened its doors to the public on 17th June, launching the event with a synchronised swim.
They will be open every weekend throughout summer and then daily from 8th July up until the 17th September.

A Sussex village, developed as a small community around the pond in Saxon times and its name means 'the village of Rota's people'. The domesday book records that the land was given to William de Warrenne the Lord of Lewes as a reward for his support at the Battle of Hastings.
