Breaking News - Russian around: Ian Herbert's World Cup travels... Kazan to Samara
A road trip into Russia's interior, far from all-consuming FIFA World Cup signage, takes us through the deserted hamlet of Staraya Sakhcha. In the roadside dust, two women of an age at which life should be getting easier sell plastic tubs of wild strawberries foraged from the forests five miles away, for about £1.They've rigged up a canopy from their battered white Lada and take it in turns to shade from a 36°C heat. The road, linking host cities Kazan and Samara, is potholed and empty.Just one of the gleaming new dual carriageways built to service the stadiums would have brought more passing trade along. FIFA will tell you the World Cup wealth trickles down in the end. The women out here won't be holding their breath. Volunteers at this tournament don't flinch in the line of duty. 'The airport taxis charge too much', one of them declares at Kazan airport before booking me an Uber from out of town and walking me to it through the seething ranks of drivers, who have been denied a fare. The volunteer is implacable. And that's why Russia wins wars. The arguments will rage about whether Russia could afford the tournament, yet you can't put a price on the way it has deconstructed many Western preconceptions about the country and its people. You expect Samara's Space Museum to be a dour, monochrome, staunchly patriotic place. But tour guide Elena Kuzina says, 'Try sitting in that turbine' and then accepts the request for a photo. Her tour does not take itself too seriously. She related the story of how Russia tested their rockets by sending dogs into space, such as one called 'Smelaya' ('The Brave'). 'When they put him in a third time he took one look inside the rocket and made a decision,' Elena says. 'He ran for it.' Two women, Anastasia and Elena, who approach in the sunshine of Samara's beautiful Volga embankment to say 'you are English?' turn out to be Jehovah's Witnesses. They talk about their lives. It transpires that mine is far easier than theirs. Russia and North Korea are the only two countries on earth where Jehovah's Witnesses are outlawed. Human Rights Watch reports that one Russian in their number faces a 10-year jail term, as a member of an 'extremist organisation'. The World Cup works in mysterious ways. When I wrote about Samara this week, Evgeniy Tishin got in touch to say that getting projects completed in Russia was difficult for the company he used to work for, which builds hospitals.'But, due to regulation that the presence of a big hospital is a mandatory condition for World Cup stadium, we built our hospital very fast,' he said. 'There was transparency. And even Mr Putin came to open it.' At Kazan's sublime Soviet Lifestyle Museum, there are videos of cheesy Soviet bands, a Johnny Rotten guitar and a poster for Led Zeppelin's local gig. Alicia, who was running the place, loved those days. The West does not know, or tell, their full story. RELATED ARTICLES Previous 1 Next Russia 2-2 Croatia AET (Croatia win 4

Sergei Leybgrad has a magic room — or at least that is what he calls it. ‘The magic room’ is the sixth room and culmination of the football museum Leybgrad founded and runs downtown Samara. It’s an extraordinary collection of 17,000 artefacts, representing Samara’s relationship with sport at large. The restless Leybgrad, however, exults when he performs a ritual in the magic room, almost praying to the gods of football with the incantation “Football in Samara is more than football!” He leaves th...
