Fremont's Peak, Salinas Valley - Monterey Bay, California
Fremont's Peak is on the central coastline of California overlooking the Salinas Valley, Monterey Bay, and Hollister Hills. Salinas is the hometown of author John Steinbeck, nestled among many other locations that inspired his novels. Salinas is the city of my birth as well, and I haven't been there in over ten years.
On a recent road trip back home, and inspired by Steinbeck, who visited Fremont's Peak before he died, I wanted to do the same. My experience was somewhat different. The walk up the steep paved road that leads to the plateau near the peak was a struggle in itself. At the time, the four-week old pain of my aggravated herniated disc, coupled with pre-diabetic legs forced me to forego actually climbing the peak. Like a clever trickster, old age dealt me an unexpected treachery. I greatly admire Steinbeck's ability when he did it, and he was older.
Sadly, there was an obstructing haze sitting over the valley on this day. You could barely recognize the outlines of Salinas, and Monterey Bay was covered in fluffy cumulous clouds. So the event did not pan out exactly as I had planned. Too bad, because I don't know if I'll ever be back.
Even so, I did receive a silver lining among the clouds of this mountaintop. Probably the real reason I came. Growing up in the Salinas Valley you first get used to having two parallel mountain ranges as the only view. While this may seem confining to some, it is more like the cradling bosom of a mother, peace and quiet reflection. From north to south the valley lovingly holds green fields filled with nourishment and sustenance. Far as the eye can see, stretching wide to the rolling foothills of the Gabilans and Santa Lucias. For a change of pace you can always go over to Monterey Bay, and witness the awesomeness of the endless open sea.
Steinbeck's novels live inside me. His words are images of an old photo album etched in my mind. I walked the same streets, been to every town. I know every back road and secluded hideaway. Even drank in the same saloons. The times may have been different, but I know every place he wrote about as if I were standing right there. His thoughts and perspectives seem logical and natural to me. Stepping back from the words, I can picture the surroundings of each scene in my mind.
In Steinbeck's last trek to Fremont's Peak he left us with words and reflections, words of a man who lived in that valley below, like me. To most people Steinbeck's words are literary works of a masterful genius, speaking of far away places. To the few of us who are from this area we can see the words through his eyes as well as our own. They are forever inside us. His sentiments and reflective words after visiting Fremont's Peak speak for me as well, now having left this valley. I think that's what I was searching for all along, as I hurried away from the permanent and changeless past.

478- Bautista Canyon Road, Bautista Conservation Camp #36
Today we are headed up Bautista Canyon Road for a drive by Bautista Conservation Camp #36, part of the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, aka CDCR.
The primary mission of the camp is to provide trained hand crews to assist the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection with suppression of wild land fires, emergency flood control, and Search and Rescue.
The CDCR is responsible for the selection, supervision, care and discipline of the inmates.
On June 27, 1990, the worst tragedy that a camp could endure hit Bautista. Seventeen Bautista crewmembers were overrun while battling a fire in the Domenigoni Mountains, Southwest of Hemet. This fire resulted in the death of two Bautista crew members, Victor Ferrara and Aaron Perry.
In remembrance of the fallen firefighters of Bautista and fallen firefighters throughout the State, fire fighter memorials began dedications in 1997.
The Bautista CDCR has proudly represented the camp program by responding to emergency incidents from the borders of Oregon to Mexico and the Pacific Ocean to Nevada/Arizona.
CALFIRE maintains 44 camps throughout California, supervises the work of the inmate fire crews, and is responsible for inmate custody while on daily grade projects.
CDCR staff often accompanies inmate fire crews on out-of-county assignments or on local assignments located near residential areas.
Inmates are directly supervised 24hours per day while on work projects and while assigned to emergencies.
In addition to fires, crews have been assigned to rescue efforts in local parks, and are also eligible to respond for flood suppression.
The camp is nestled in the Historical Bautista Canyon, the route used by the Conquistador Juan Bautista de Anza in his discovery of the Riverside and San Bernardino Valleys.
Also known as the sight of the original Bautista springtime exercises. Located some 3000 feet in elevation, the camp is exposed to a medley of climatic conditions, typical to its high desert terrain.
Often the summer is dry and hot, while the winter is cold, with an occasional snowfall in the months of December through April.
Bautista has a maximum capacity of 120 inmates, which provide six trained firefighting hand crews.
When not responding to emergency incidents, the inmates' work on conservation projects including eradication of nonnative plant species at Diamond Valley Lake and Lake Matthews, fighting the bark beetle infestation in and around the community of Idyllwild.
Community projects have included construction of community centers, fire stations, parks, and soccer and baseball fields for Valley Wide Recreation District.
Bautista’s cabinet shop is in demand throughout Riverside County, to design and remodel their offices and living spaces. Bautista is also known for their expertise in making plaques, signs, and distinctive logos.
The prisoners like the fire camps because they rarely get to see the outdoors and get paid $1 per day. They sent into areas with high heat and dangerous situations. They will never be hired to work for the fire department with a criminal record, however.

Geologists Say: “Slow Earthquakes on San Andreas Fault Trigger Larger Earthquakes!
Geologists Say: “Slow Earthquakes on San Andreas Fault Trigger Larger Earthquakes!
Geologists have long thought that the central section of California's famed San Andreas Fault—from San Juan Bautista southward to Parkfield, a distance of about 80 miles—has a steady creeping movement that provides a safe release of energy.
Creep on the central San Andreas during the past several decades, so the thinking goes, has reduced the chance of a big quake that ruptures the entire fault from north to south.
However new research by two Arizona State University geophysicists shows that the earth movements along this central section have not been smooth and steady, as previously thought.
Instead, the activity has been a sequence of small stick-and-slip movements—sometimes called slow earthquakes—that release energy over a period of months. Although these slow earthquakes pass unnoticed by people, the researchers say they can trigger large destructive quakes in their surroundings. One such quake was the magnitude 6 event that shook Parkfield in 2004.
