Exploring an Abandoned Hockey Arena and Sand Sculpture Museum
This now abandoned hockey arena was built in 1950 and had a capacity of approximately 3,000. The arena was home to various ice hockey teams in the past, including a team with the Greater Ontario Junior B Hockey League.
Photo Gallery here:
The Memorial Arena hosted four of the five games played in the 1968 Memorial Cup.
The abandoned Arena is hulking, empty shell now, one of the many arenas built across the province in the aftermath of the Second World War that has ultimately a date upcoming with the wrecking ball. The city council never really properly maintained the building, and by the end of its life the local junior B team was plagued by a leaking roof and structural deficiencies, as well as a parking problem that can only be caused by being located within walking distance of one of the world's largest tourist draws.
Once inside the arena you entered a dark lobby with ticket booths and concessions directly in front of you. There was a plaque on the far wall announcing the building's opening on January 25, 1950, and another one indicating that renovations took place in 1986.
There was also a portrait of the Queen.
The other side of the lobby had a large display case featuring trophies and memorabilia from the old Junior B team
From the lobby you went upstairs into the seating bowl. Inside, there was a small score-clock and a huge number of banners hanging from the ceiling. Seats are all blue, all plastic, and I believe they dated from the 1986 renovation.
The arena was decommissioned and declared surplus to the city’s needs after a new $38-million four-pad athletic centre was built in June 2010.
The International Sand Sculptures Exhibition was officially opened inside the building in August 2013 by Russian-based consortium V2 Niagara.
The world’s top sand sculptors were brought to the city to create War of 1812-themed displays depicting people, places and events. Three thousand tons of sand was used to create 25 sculptures.
The real estate agent for the facility said the exhibit wasn’t making enough money. The off-shore owner was convinced he could make a go of it, but it wasn’t successful and he put the building and its contents up for sale in November 2014.
The sand sculptures are still inside the arena and will be sold with the building, if a purchaser wants them.
As of April of 2018 there had been talk that the building would become the home to a new museum dedicated to the Titanic.

Holland - Sand Sculpting competition
T/I: 10:29:54
Each year, millions of people sit for hours on a beach with nothing more than a bucket and a spade to amuse themselves. For young and old, there's nothing quite like building a sandcastle. But at the International Sand Sculpture Festival in the Netherlands, building with sand has been elevated to as art form.
This year ten European teams of sand sculptors from Denmark, France, Ireland and Holland battled it out on the beaches to become this year's
champions. The task for the competing teams this year was to realise the
theme A World of Royalty in sand, according to their own design and idea.
King of the Castle this year, was Caspar Thyssen and his team for their sculpture entitled, An Endless Journey for a Better World. The work shows an endless stream of tiny figures trying to enter a royal world, which is protected by guards. If the people are courageous enough they will be able to enter the royal world, if not, they will be destroyed.

SOT Angelique de Leur, organiser: Well we're always looking for something special and also something to do with fantasy, becuase of course what we're building is a fantasy world it won't stay forever. And we thought a Royal world idea, it evokes a lot of fantastic ideas so that's why we chose the theme Royal World;

We Found Incredible Sculptures inside this Abandoned Hockey Arena
This Hockey Arena was Built in 1950 and closed many years later and was put into purpose once again for a short period of time by a museum. They had an exhibit for the Canadian Bicentennial and closed shortly after. These sand sculptures have been standing inside this abandoned hockey arena ever since.
I do apologize for the lighting it was really dark in there and I did the best i could do to film the sculptures.

Snow and Ice Festival in the World ( Harbin International Ice and Snow Sculpture Festival )
Harbin International Ice and Snow Sculpture Festival
The Harbin International Ice and Snow Sculpture Festival is an annual winter festival that takes place with a theme in Harbin, Heilongjiang, China, and now is the largest ice and snow festival in the world. At first participants in the festival were mainly Chinese, however it has since become an international festival and competition. The festival includes the world's biggest ice sculptures.
Officially, the festival starts on January 5 and lasts one month. However, exhibits often open earlier and stay longer, weather permitting. While ice sculptures are erected throughout the city, there are two main exhibition areas:
Sun Island is a recreational area on the opposite side of the Songhua River from the city, which features an expo of enormous snow sculptures. Ice and Snow World is an area open at night which features illuminated full size buildings made from blocks of 2–3' thick ice taken directly from the Songhua River. At first China celebrated it then Harbin took over. During the festival, there are ice lantern park touring activities held in many parks in the city. Winter activities during the festival include Yabuli alpine skiing, winter-swimming in the Songhua River, and the ice-lantern exhibition in Zhaolin Garden. Harbin is located in Northeast China and receives cold winter wind from Siberia. The average temperature in summer is 21.2 °C (70.2 °F), and –16.8 °C (1.8 °F) in winter. Annual lows of -35 °C (–31 °F) are not uncommon.
The festival originated in Harbin's traditional ice lantern show and garden party that takes place in winter, which began in 1963. It was interrupted for a number of years during the Cultural Revolution, but has since been resumed when an annual event at Zhaolin Park was announced on January 5, 1985. In 2001, the Harbin Ice Festival was merged with Heilongjiang's International Ski Festival and got its new formal name, the Harbin International Ice and Snow Sculpture Festival. In 2007, the festival featured a Canadian themed sculpture, in memoriam of Canadian doctor Norman Bethune. It was awarded a Guinness Record for the world's largest snow sculpture: 250 metres long, 28 feet (8.5 m) high, using over 13,000 cubic metres of snow. The composition consisted of two parts: the Niagara Falls and the crossing the Bering Strait (the latter depicting the migration of the First Nations). In 2014, the festival celebrated its 30th anniversary with the theme 50-Year Ice Snow, Charming Harbin. Various fairs, competitions and expos were held from 20 December 2013 to February 2014. In 2015, the 31st Harbin Ice Snow Festival opened on Jan. 5 and was themed Ice Snow Harbin, Charming China Dreams around the world [ with opening ceremony, firework show, ice lanterns , birthday parties, snow sculpture competitions and expos, as well as winter swimming, winter fishing, group wedding ceremony, fashion shows, concerts, ice sport games lasting from 22 December 2014 to early March 2015.
Swing saws are used to carve ice into blocks, taken from the frozen surface of the Songhua River. Chisels, ice picks and various types of saws are then used by ice sculptors to carve out large scaled ice sculptures, many of them intricately designed and worked on all day and night prior to the commencement of the festival. Deionised water can also be used, producing ice blocks as transparent as glass to make clear sculptures rather than translucent ones. Multicoloured lights are also used to give colour to ice, creating variations on sculptured spectacles when lit up especially at night. Some ice sculptures made in previous years include: buildings and monuments of different architectural types and styles, figures including animals people and mythical creatures, slippery dips or ice slides and lanterns. Apart from winter recreational activities available in Harbin, these exquisitely detailed, mass-produced ice sculptures are the main draw card in attracting tourists around the world to the festival.
