Sandwich First Baptist Church
Connecting the Dots Digital Story: Sandwich First Baptist Church
After Nova Scotia, our Connecting the Dots nationwide tour brought us to the Windsor region. The two tour stops shared some uncanny resemblances. Much like Nova Scotia, the southwestern Ontario region has a rich history of early Black settlers on this land. Our team had the unique opportunity to sit down with Lana Talbot - legacy preserver of Sandwich First Baptist Church, the oldest Black church in Windsor, Ontario and a designated national historic site. This church served as a safe-haven for refugee slaves along the Underground Railroad, and our visit to this site was soul-stirring.

St. John's Cemetery
Established in 1788, Sandwich is Windsor’s most historic neighbourhood and has been the setting for many battles over the years. From the earliest Indigenous settlements to now, it has played a key role in shaping our local history. With veterans from as far back as the Seven Years War (1756-1763) buried at St. John’s Anglican Church, the cemetery serves as a who’s who of Sandwich Town’s past. There’s a significant amount of Canada’s military history buried at the corner of Brock and Sandwich Streets. Peter Berry of the Windsor Port Authority has been volunteering his time to not only research and identify all the veteran graves, but also to help maintain the churchyard so the history of the area can be preserved and appreciated, and our respects can be paid.

SANDWICHED
Thesis: Sandwiched
Embarked on a research based documentary film thesis to present some of the historical significance of Sandwich Town by exploring stories from its past and the efforts made by nine individuals who have helped to preserve its history. Illustrating aspects of the struggle to protect Sandwich Town, the film explores some of the obstacles that currently face the residents including the possible twinning of the Ambassador Bridge, which connects Windsor, Ontario to Detroit, Michigan. Eight filmed interviews were personally conducted to provide the pertinent information incorporated in to this film. The interviews have been edited and intertwined to reflect the ongoing conversations that stress the importance of the town, and the struggle to preserve its history.
