SANTA FE, USA - travel shorts
Welcome to 'the city different,' a place that makes its own rules without ever forgetting its long and storied past. Walking through its historic neighborhoods, or around the busy Plaza that remains its core, there's no denying that Santa Fe has a timeless, earthy soul. Founded around 1610, Santa Fe is the second-oldest city and the oldest state capital in the US, and is all but unique in having not only preserved many of its seductive original adobe buildings, but also insisted that all new downtown structures follow the same architectural style. And yet, despite being home to the country’s oldest public building and throwing its oldest annual party, Fiesta, Santa Fe is also synonymous with contemporary chic, thanks to its thriving art market, gourmet restaurants, great museums, upscale spas and world-class opera.
At over 7000ft above sea level, Santa Fe is also the nation’s highest state capital. Sitting at the foot of the glowing Sangre de Cristo range, it makes a fantastic base for hiking, mountain biking, backpacking and skiing. When you come off the trails, you can indulge in chile-smothered local cuisine, buy turquoise and silver directly from Native American jewelers in the Plaza, visit remarkable churches, or simply wander along centuries-old, cottonwood-shaded lanes and daydream about some day moving here.
Santa Fe’s mind-boggling assortment of characters include traditional and avant-garde artists, New Age hippy transplants, Spanish families that have called the city home for centuries, Mexican immigrants, retirees from both coasts, and more than a few Hollywood producers and movie stars. Most are drawn above all by the relaxed attitude, the sense of space, the unbeatable climate and that certain something that gives Santa Fe a singularly alluring essence.
Route 66 Guided Motorcycle Tour: Santa Fe, NM - Gallup, NM
Hear what EagleRider's Tour Expert, Erik, loves about Day 9 of riding the Route 66 Guided Tour. Full Tour Route:
What happens on this day of the Tour?
This morning you head south, down to Albuquerque, New Mexico’s largest city, with a third of the state’s population. Albuquerque is sprawling at the heart of New Mexico, where the main east - west road and rail routes cross both the Rio Grande and the old road south to Mexico. You cross the Rio Grande and head west – out into the open country and the hues of the Navajo wilderness. You are skirting mesas and bluffs on into Laguna. Further on ride through Grants and along Cibola National Forest towards the famous Route 66 town of Gallup – an old railroad town and Indian stronghold. Enjoy your stay tonight with a host of fellow riders from around the world at one of the many biker friendly hotels in Gallup.
Day 2: Santa Fe, New Mexico
Day 2: A Cloudy Day in Santa Fe
Santa Fe, New Mexico
By far this was the most exhilarating ride since I started mountain biking. I finally got a few minutes to put the video together of the fastest footage from the 3000 ft descent.
This one gets really crazy, fast, and fun. It was very hard to narrow down the footage to just 6 minutes, but here you go!
Oh, and sorry about the wind noise in some of the sections, like I said, FAST!
Our trip to Santa Fe/Los Alamos

Hyde Park Road Descent - Santa Fe, NM
Descent of Hyde Park Road during Texas Triathlon's Spring Break Trip on March 13th, 2017. It was a cool experience riding to the top of the mountain which was completely covered in snow, without a speck of snow at the bottom. My favorite part of the ride was around 13:00 in the video, going through the campgrounds.
Averaged about 25mph for the descent, or closer to 30mph if you don't include the small uphill sections. Full ride details:
18th Sept 2015 Durango to Santa Fe Road Trip

Route 66 Part 8 - We Reach SANTA FE, New Mexico
In part 8 we take Route 66 from Tucumcari to Santa Fe, New Mexico.
This is the Santa Fe loop which was the original alignment of Route 66 between 1926 and 1937.
Santa Fe is the capital of New Mexico and looks very different to many of the other towns and cities on Route 66. It has a very distinctive architectural style all its own. Low rise, adobe brick buildings, which consist of a mixture of sun-dried earth and straw. Many of these are over 400 years old.
Santa Fe is also home to many artists with galleries concentrated along Canyon Road.
We stayed in Santa Fe for two nights so got a full day to explore. As well as the historic buildings in the centre of town we did get chance to visit the Santa Fe Farmers Market at the Railyard which is open Saturday and Tuesday mornings and Wednesday afternoons.
We didn’t take the camera to any restaurants but the standard of food in Santa Fe is excellent.
So make sure you take the Santa Fe Loop when driving Route 66.
Next time, we drive Route 66 to Winslow, Arizona.

Camping & MTBing Santa Fe, New Mexico | Bandelier National Monument
Our trip to Santa Fe, New Mexico started with us leaving on the 4th of July at 6am from Little Rock, Arkansas. We arrived at Santa Fe KOA Journey around 6pm. We set up our tent and did a quick camp ground review. After that we drove to Blue Corn Brewery where we had amazing food and beer.
The next morning we had french toast, shopped at Trader Joe's, and then went on a Mountain Bike Ride at North West of Santa Fe. The trail systems name we road was La Tierra Trails, and we entered at the La Cuchara Trailhead. Was an amazing ride. After that we drove to downtown Santa Fe where we walked around. We visited Vinyl Cafe, San Miguel Mission (the oldest church in the United State. Built in 1610), Apothecary Restaurant at Santa Fe Oxygen and Healing Bar, and Hervé Wine Bar. After that we left downtown Santa Fe, New Mexico and drove up to Ski Santa Fe in the Santa Fe National Forest to explore and do a little yoga.
We left there and drove to make dinner at camp. For dinner we made filet mignon, salmon, broccoli, and mushroom risotto.
We woke up the following morning and cooked breakfast burritos. After that we drove to White Rock, New Mexico to ride a bus to Bandelier National Monument. Ones done exploring Bandelier National Monument, we drove back to Santa Fe, New Mexico and had a beer at Santa Fé Brewing Company. Our last stop on this trip we went over to Chili Line Brewing Co. where we had a beer and dinner.

I CROSS THE MEXICAN BORDER TO CHECK MY EGO @CROSSFIT_915 EL PASO, TEXAS
On my only day off in Mexico, I decide to cross the infamous Mexican - American border crossing the Santa Fe bridge, officially know as Paso del Norte International Bridge to reach El Paso Texas by foot.
I do a bit of sightseeing and look for an illusive Starbucks shop in what looks and feels like a ghost town being Sunday morning. I then make my way to CrossFit 915 East to indeed check my ego at the door of the box to improve on my bad looking bar muscle-ups...
