Santa Rita Mayan Ruins, Corozal, Belize
Sitio maya No. 70. Santa Rita Corozal, Belice

Secret Mayan ruin in Belize
This great historical Maya site commemorates the birth place of the Mestizos.
Archaeologist believe that Santa Rita is almost certainly the ancient city of Chetumal and was occupied from 2000 BC to 1530 AD, with its primary importance in the Late Post Classic Period from 1350-1530 when it was an important center for the trade of honey, vanilla, cacao and anchiote to the northern Yucatan and other locations. The breadth of the trade that flourished in Santa Rita is evidenced by findings at the site that include Andean pottery from the Late Classic Period and turquoise jewelry from the Aztecs.
Santa Rita was abandoned when Spanish forces cut off trade routes to the north.
The Belize town of Corozal was built on top of Santa Rita and only one building remains from the ancient Mayan City of Chetumal. Santa Rita is located on the outskirts of Corozal just off the main road to Santa Elena and Mexico. The Caribbean Sea forms the eastern boundary of Santa Rita.
The modern town of Corozal was founded in 1848 by refugees from the Caste War in neighbouring Yucatán, and expanded steadily making it the major ethnicity in the country at the time. The ruins of Santa Rita became a target for building resources; the mounds of the site made convenient road fill and the stones were used for structure foundations. Because of this, the exact borders of the ancient Mayan city may never be known.
According to a Belize government guide at the site in December 2016, Thomas Gann was there primarily looking for gold. He used explosives to blow the top off of the pyramid, leaving the stunted version visible today.
Artifacts found dating from the Postclassic era reveal that religious rituals like blood-letting, which were very important during the Classic era, continued to play an important role. The presence of items of Aztec origin, also dating from the Postclassic period, attest to the continuing trade importance of Santa Rita several hundred years after the decline of the major ceremonial centres of the interior.
Royal Maya Wedding Reenactment at Santa Rita Site Belize
The Festival del Mestizaje that was held at the Santa Rita Archaeological Park and Wedding Garden in Corozal Town on December 20, 2012 featured the re-enactment of the wedding between Tzazil-Ha, the Mayan Princess and Gonzalo Guerrero, the Spanish Conquistador. The festival was held at such a historic event of the Maya calendar to bolster awareness and raise funds for a project approved in January 2012 by NICH and the Institute of Archaeology (IOA). The project involved the development of the tourism potential of the Santa Rita Archaeological Park by transforming it into the Official Mayan Wedding Garden of Belize.

A Visitor’s Centre is Installed at the Uxbenka Archaeological Site
For the latest news across Belize, visit:
In 2015, there was huge controversy when a section of a mound at the Uxbenka Archaeological Site was cleared by Rupert Myles, a resident of Santa Cruz Village. Because the site is sacred to the Mayas, Myles was asked to remove the house he had built on the mound. He didn’t, so the Maya tied him up and hell broke loose. Tonight, there is good news for the community because a visitor’s centre has been erected atop the mound and is now officially opened to the public. Our friends at PG TV were present for the opening and share the following images. News Five’s Duane Moody reports.
