Driving Downtown - Saranac Lake, New York
Saranac Lake is a village in the state of New York, United States. As of the 2010 census, the population was 5,406.[2] The village is named after Upper, Middle and Lower Saranac lakes, which are nearby.
The village of Saranac Lake covers parts of three towns (Harrietstown, St. Armand, and North Elba) and two counties (Franklin and Essex). The county line is within two blocks of the center of the village. At the 2010 census, 3,897 village residents lived in Harrietstown,[3] 1,367 lived in North Elba,[4] and 142 lived in St. Armand.[5] The village boundaries do not touch the shores of any of the three Saranac Lakes; Lower Saranac Lake, the nearest, is a half mile west of the village. The northern reaches of Lake Flower, which is a wide part of the Saranac River downstream from the three Saranac Lakes, lie within the village. The town of Saranac is an entirely separate entity, 33 miles (53 km) down the Saranac River to the northeast.
The village lies within the boundaries of the Adirondack Park, 9 miles (14 km) west of Lake Placid. These two villages, along with nearby Tupper Lake, comprise what is known as the Tri-Lakes region.
Saranac Lake was named the best small town in New York State and ranked 11th in the United States in The 100 Best Small Towns in America.[6] In 1998, the National Civic League named Saranac Lake an All-America City, and in 2006 the village was named one of the Dozen Distinctive Destinations by the National Trust for Historic Preservation.[7] 186 buildings in the village are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

West Point Visits the Adirondack Carousel....Take Two
Ten recent graduates of the United States Military Academy Preparatory School (USMAPS) now located at West Point, N.Y. recently visited the Adirondack Carousel in Saranac Lake, N.Y. on its second ever day of operation. This video shows them during their second and final ride on the carousel. All ten of these remarkable young men and women have already been accepted to, and will enter the United States Military Academy (USMA) at West Point, N.Y. as cadet candidates in the USMA Class of 2016. The Grand Opening of this newest Adirondack attraction was the previous day. This attraction will give all of the North Country (and beyond) a beautiful two abreast carousel to ride. This beautiful carousel with its hand carved wooden animals (by carvers from across the US), and paintings of local scenes (on the carousel's rounding boards) and local wild flowers (on the carousel's medallions) were all painted by local artists. The carousel is operated by a not-for-profit corporation, and has educational as well as entertainment goals. Many, many volunteers worked long hard hours to bring this ten year plus project to completion. In the future, residents and area visitors, including campers at nearby Fish Creek Ponds, Rollins Ponds, Loon Lake, Long Lake, and Meadowbrook NY State Public Campsites will have a unique child friendly and reasonably priced attraction for sunny and rainy day use in downtown Saranac Lake.
Of particular note was the friendliness and excellent behavior of all the animals on the carousel during the future military leaders visit.
Please note that the carousel is handicapped accessible, and the boat on the carousel allows for securing a wheel chair and its occupant firmly in place during the carousel ride.
Additionally, the carousel's location in the William Morris Park at Depot Street and Bloomingdale Avenue is approximately 600 feet from Saranac Lake's Union Railroad Station, which offers seasonal railroad passenger service from/to Lake Placid, N.Y. on the Adirondack Scenic Railroad. So ride the train from/to Lake Placid, and ride the carousel during the Saranac Lake layover.
The Village of Saranac Lake (NY, USA) Feedback on their Trial of EcoTraction
The Village of Saranac Lake is located in beautiful Adirondack Park, NY. They contacted the makers of EcoTraction in December 2008 after seeing the Canadian TV show Dragons' Den. They tried this environmentally friendly product as an alternative to de-icing salt and sand during their Feb. 2009 annual winter carnival and found that it worked better than sand and prevented the problems they normally face with sand and salt.
The village received a lot of positive feedback from staff and visitors, with zero slips and falls incident reported. They also didn't face the need for clean up in the spring, something that is required when using sand. For more information on EcoTraction, visit:
