Colombo Courtyard: Art & Elements | Boutique Hotel | Sri Lanka
As an Environmental Designer, I strive to bring sustainability into my work in every context. Accordingly, the remit for renovation and amalgamation of multi-style urban structures seemed to naturally progress to the theme of Recycling. Using Recycling as an overall theme, I have attempted to showcase the wide range of possible applications and allowed it to influence both architectural and interior design. Machine parts that are not normally used for interior decoration have been widely used.
Further as contextual relevance is a vital component of Environmental Design, the characteristics of the city of Colombo were displayed in the contemporary City series of photos and the art &sculptural theme of the 'Colombo Crows'.
This unique collection of contemporary Sri Lankan art was curated by architect Sunela Jayawardena, in collaboration with the Saskia Fernando Gallery (SFG). SFG is Colombo's only gallery that focuses entirely on the local contemporary art scene, staging exhibitions of established and emerging artists locally and in art capitals such as London, Singapore and Dubai. The collection for Colombo Courtyard was curated in keeping with the hotel's sustainable architecture theme. Artist Prageeth Manohansa was commissioned to complete his second largest sculpture to-date constructed entirely out of scrap metal. Mika Tennekoon's crow paintings are part of the series exhibited in a two man show with the sculptor and maintain the theme of Colombo nature, as requested by the architect. Other works featured within the space all focus on Sri Lankan nature, man and beast as a representation of the attention paid to recycled art and design for Colombo Courtyard Hotel.

Prediction Extinction
Firi Rahman’s body of work consists entirely of hyperrealist drawings. He held his first solo exhibition at Saskia Fernando Gallery in 2015 after which his work was featured in Colomboscope - Shadow Scenes, a visual art exhibition curated by Natasha Ginwala and Menike Van der Poorten. He was thereafter invited to speak at the Sri Lankan Archive for Contemporary Art, Architecture and Design in Jaffna on his work and experiences as an emerging artist.
In this body of work Rahman has evolved from portraiture to conceptual hyperrealism. After completing research on the subject of extinction accompanied by his own advocacy against the increase in endangered species in Sri Lanka alone, he began work on drawings of animals that depict their story within markings and the illustration itself. Moving away from direct representation into a narrative of purpose the artist combines the story with the movement and character of his subject, using detail to create a seemingly tactile creature.

UNTIE TO TIE – on colonial legacies and contemporary societies. Chapter #3 Every Mask I Ever Loved
About „Untie to Tie – On Colonial Legacies and Contemporary Societies“
In times of cultural misperceptions and silenced stories, increasing nationalism, discrimination and intolerance across the globe, Untie to Tie invites audiences to reflect on the impact of colonial legacies which have formed modern societies in the first place, and which continue to globally influence our contemporary realities. With Untie to Tie, ifa Gallery Berlin presents a one-year research and exhibition programme. From April 2017 to April 2018, four chapters address the colonial legacies on contemporary societies through the following angles: global relatedness, urban cultures, intersectional feminisms with a closing chapter dedicated to riots and resistance. untietotie.org

Chapter 2: Urban Cultures / 23.06.-17.09.2017
Chapter 3: Intersectional Feminisms / 29.09.2017-14.01.2018
