Satyagraha House is a lovingly restored guest house and a living museum and testament to a man who believed in freedom and equality for all. The seven-bedroomed African hut-inspired house was once in a rural area and home to Gandhi from 1908 to 1909. The home inhibited by Nelson Mandela’s great inspiration Mahatma Gandhi reflects the spirit and philosophy of the man who rejected extravagance and luxuries in life.
Lauren Segal (Curator, Satyagraha House) is our guide through the home and shares with us anecdotes and tales of the life of Ghadi and the German born Jewish South African who lived with him, Kallenbach.

Over a hundred years ago, Mohandas Gandhi lived in a house in Johannesburg. Today, the Satyagraha House is both a museum and a guest house. Our team visited this historic establishment to see what is on offer.

Satyagraha House, commonly known as Gandhi House, is a museum and guest house located in Johannesburg. The house belonged to Mahatma Gandhi: he lived and worked there between 1908 and 1909. It is registered as part of Johannesburg's historical heritage. Satyagraha means insistence on truth. The house was designed by the architect Hermann Kallenbach for Gandhi and himself.
