Yaroslavl, Russia. Best Russian historical city to visit
Situated at the confluence of the Volga and Kotorosl Rivers around 300 km north-east of Moscow, the historic city of Yaroslavl developed into a major commercial centre from the 11th century.
There are two major passenger railway stations in Yaroslavl. They can be easily mixed up. The one you are probably looking for is called ‘Yaroslavl-Glavny’. The city is connected to Moscow by a fast electric train service with comfortable seats. Just 3 hours from the capital of Russia and you are in the very centre of Yaroslavl.
Yaroslavl is one of the Golden Ring cities, a group of historic cities northeast of Moscow that have played an important role in Russian history. The historic part of the city is a World Heritage Site.
One of the central squares of Yaroslavl is called Sovetskaya. Ironically, the most beautiful and notable orthodox church in the town is located just here. This is the Church of Elijah the Prophet, which is a very prominent example of the way in which the city developed in the 17th century.
The church of the Epiphany is an Orthodox church in Yaroslavl. Built in 17th century as well, it is known for beautiful fresco paintings and tiled decoration of facades.
Another famous cathedral in Yaroslavl, Uspensky, was built in the 13th century and destroyed in the Soviet era, the city park was created on its place. The cathedral was rebuilt in 2010, its construction was completed to the 1000th anniversary of Yaroslavl.
While walking around the city centre you will definitely find this Kremlin-alike construction. The truth is it is not the Yaroslavl Kremlin, it is the Cathedral of the Spassky (St Savior) Monastery. The Cathedral is the oldest buildings in the city. Typical for a Russian monastery of the Middle Ages, the Spaso-Preobrazhensky Monastery in Yaroslavl was not built to be no more than a place of worship, but also to be a citadel and kremlin in case, in times of war.
Just near this monastery you can find a little structure, the Lady of Kazan Chapel. If you have a one thousand rubles banknote, you can find it there as well along with the monument to Yaroslav the Wise, the founder of the city.
1000 Anniversary of Yaroslavl was celebrated in Russia in 2003. Huge part of the historic centre was renovated with some new sightseeings constructed. Strelka park is one of them, it’s a huge promenade area at the bank of the Volga river with beautiful views. The Volga embankment is a good example of urban planning in the classicist style; built in the 1840s, this promenade walk has remained a favourite place for residents to take a stroll and relax ever since.

Владимир Валентинович Головин родился 6 сентября в 1961 году в г. Ульяновск Ульяновской области. В этом же году был крещён. Получил обычное школьное – среднее образование. После школы работал на Ульяновском механическом заводе по специальности слесаря. По исполнении совершеннолетия и освобождения от служения в рядах Советской Армии в 1979 году поступил в Московскую Духовную Семинарию. С 1982 по 1986 гг. служил алтарником в храме в честь иконы Божией Матери «Неопалимая Купина» г. Ульяновск.
В сентябре 1986 года, в неделю по Воздвижении Господнем, в кафедральном Никольском соборе г. Казани рукоположен в диакона епископом Казанским и Марийским Пантелеимоном. Проходил диаконское служение в Троицком соборе г. Ижевска (Удмуртия). В 1987 году переведён в храм Ярославских чудотворцев, что на Арском кладбище г. Казани. В мае 1987 г., в Преполовение Пятидесятницы рукоположен Преосвященным Пантелеимоном в священника. Проходил служение настоятеля Сретенской церкви с. Большая Кучка Оршанского района Марийской АССР. В 1988 году епископом Казанским и Марийским Анастасием назначен настоятелем Свято-Авраамиевского прихода г. Куйбышев ТАССР (ныне г. Болгар РТ).
С 2003 года отец Владимир, по благословению архиепископа (ныне митрополита) Казанского и Татарстанского Анастасия, совершает общение с паломниками из различных городов России и Зарубежья. Ведя многочасовые проповеди, давая духовные наставления, он без остатка посвящает себя служению людям и пользуется заслуженным авторитетом среди горожан и представителей власти, чутко относится к любому человеку, мудро организует деятельность всех структур прихода. За непрерывный двадцативосьмилетний стаж священнического служения удостоен множества церковных наград. Имеет множество грамот, благодарственных писем, медалей от представителей государственной власти, общественных организаций и обществ.
В 2015 году в день памяти перенесения мощей святого мученика Авраамия Болгарского Высокопреосвященнейшим Анастасием, митрополитом Казанским и Татарстанским, награжден правом ношения креста с украшением: «за усердное служение Церкви Христовой».
С июня 2015 года возглавляет Попечительский совет Благотворительного Фонда содействия просвещению общества Святого мученика Феодора Болгарского.
С сентября месяца 2015 года, указом преосвященнейшего Пармена епископа Чистопольского и Нижнекамского, утвержден в должности духовника ставленников к священному сану вверенной ему епархии.

The most beautiful church of the city, the Church of Elijah the Prophet is the pride and joy of Yaroslavl and the favorite tourist attraction. It was built in 1647 – 1650 and is one of the most complete and best-preserved monuments of Yaroslavl. Built on the site of two churches, the Intercession and Elijah, the church is considered a real masterpiece of ancient Russian art. The main structure of the temple is a massive building on high foundation topped with five heads resting on light drums. The drums are decorated with arches and columns and surrounded by the rows of kokoshniks. But the main thing is, of course, the interior painting, made by famous Kostroma masters. They have no equals in beauty, richness and brightness of colors.
From both sides the Church of Elijah the Prophet is surrounded by a wide two-tier covered gallery. The gallery from the north and the west is accessed by richly decorated porches. The northwest of the temple is decorated with a tall tent bell tower. Its ornate level is surrounded by arched windows. It is the chapel of the Deposition of the Robe that gives such an unusual openwork appearance to the Church of Elijah the Prophet. Its tall slender octagonal tent is surrounded by a number of kikoshniks, that make the whole structure look elegant and colorful.

Yaroslavl is a city located 250 kilometers northeast of Moscow. The historic part of the city, a World Heritage Site, is located at the confluence of the Volga and the Kotorosl Rivers. It is one of the Golden Ring cities, a group of historic cities northeast of Moscow that have played an important role in Russian history.
The most well-known building in the city is the 'Spaso-Preobrazhensky' ('Transfiguration of the Savior') Cathedral of the Spassky (St Savior) Monastery. This monastery was founded in the 12th century. The Transfiguration Cathedral itself is built in 1516.
Typical for a Russian monastery of the Middle Ages, the Spaso-Preobrazhensky Monastery in Yaroslavl was not built to be no more than a place of worship, but also to be a citadel and kremlin. The monastery is surrounded by a thick 16th century, white-painted wall, complete with watchtowers and embattlements. Within these walls stand the magisterial churches, which, with their asymmetrically-ordered towers and beautifully decorated interiors, make for wonderful examples of traditional Russian sacral architecture.

St. John the Baptist Church in Yaroslavl is considered to be the acme of the Yaroslavl school of architecture. It was built in 1671-1687 on the bank of Kotorosl river.
Its walls and dome drums are covered with richly glazed tiles. The entire interior is covered with frescoes depicting Christian saints, St. John the Baptist hagiography and biblical topics. They were painted by Dmitry Plekhanov and Fyodor Ignatyev in 1694-1695.

Dmytri Stepanovych Bortniansky (1751–1825) was a composer and conductor of Ukrainian origin. Bortniansky is best known today for his liturgical works and his prolific contributions to the genre of choral concertos. Contemporary of Ludwig van Beethoven in Western Europe, he was one of the Golden Three of his era in the East of the continent, along with Artemy Vedel and Maksym Berezovsky. Bortniansky composed in many different musical styles, including choral compositions in French, Italian, Latin, German and Church Slavonic.

Inside Church of the Savior on Blood in Saint Petersburg, Russia
Architecturally, the Cathedral differs from St. Petersburg's other structures. The city's architecture is predominantly Baroque and Neoclassical, but the Savior on Blood harks back to medieval Russian architecture in the spirit of romantic nationalism. It intentionally resembles the 17th-century Yaroslavl churches and the celebrated St. Basil's Cathedral in Moscow.
The Church contains over 7500 square metres of mosaics—according to its restorers, more than any other church in the world. This record may be surpassed by the Cathedral Basilica of St. Louis, which houses 7700 square meters of mosaics. The interior was designed by some of the most celebrated Russian artists of the day—including Viktor Vasnetsov, Mikhail Nesterov and Mikhail Vrubel — but the church's chief architect, Alfred Alexandrovich Parland, was relatively little-known (born in St. Petersburg in 1842 in a Baltic-German Lutheran family). Perhaps not surprisingly, the Church's construction ran well over budget, having been estimated at 3.6 million roubles but ending up costing over 4.6 million. The walls and ceilings inside the Church are completely covered in intricately detailed mosaics — the main pictures being biblical scenes or figures — but with very fine patterned borders setting off each picture.
Savior on the Spilled Blood in St. Petersburg, Russia
The Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood is one of the main sights of Saint Petersburg, Russia. Other names include the Church on Spilled Blood, the Temple of the Savior on Spilled Blood, and the Cathedral of the Resurrection of Christ.
The Church of the Resurrection, also known as the Savior on Spilled Blood, was built in memory of Alexander II who was assassinated in 1881. The church stands in the very place where a bomb was thrown into his carriage by a young man who opposed the Tsar's reforms.
Alexander II was among the greatest Russian tsars, one of the main accomplishments of whom was the emancipation of serfs in 1861, which brought an end to the de facto slavery of the Russian peasantry, five years before the emancipation of slaves in the US.
The Cathedral of the Savior on Spilled Blood attracts people with its five onion-domes exuberantly decorated and covered with jeweler's enamel. It has a similar façade to St Basil's Cathedral in Moscow and its peculiar multicolored exterior makes the church stand out from St. Petersburg’s typically strict architectural proportions and color combinations.
It took around 24 years to construct such a majestic edifice as the Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood and, after early Soviet vandalism, 27 years to restore. People would even joke that as soon as the construction trestles outside it were removed, the Soviet Regime would fall.
It may have been a coincidence, but the reconstruction that finished in 1991 was followed by the famous events which put an end to the Communist regime.
The highlight of both the interior and exterior of the Cathedral are its mosaic collection based on the paintings of Vasnetsov, Nesterov, and Vrubel. With a total area of 23130 square feet, it is one of the largest mosaic collections in Europe.
The Cathedral is decorated with Italian limestone and various semiprecious stones like jasper, mountain crystal, topaz, and others. On the outside, there are twenty granite plates which tell the most important events of Alexander II's reign. Quite a valuable gem to enhance your Saint Petersburg tour, isn't it?
Erected on the site where political nihilists fatally wounded Emperor Alexander II in March 1881, the church was constructed between 1883 and 1907, funded by the imperial family.
Construction began in 1883 during the reign of Alexander III, two years after the assassination of his father Alexander II. The church was dedicated to be a memorial to his father. Estimates suggest that the construction cost 4.5 million rubles. The construction was completed during the reign of Nicholas II in 1907. Funding was provided by the Imperial family with the support of many private donors.
The church is prominently situated along the Griboedov Canal; paved roads run along both sides of the canal. On March 13, 1881, as Alexander II's carriage passed along the embankment, a grenade thrown by an anarchist conspirator exploded. The tsar, shaken but unhurt, got out of the carriage and started to remonstrate with the presumed culprit. A second conspirator took the chance to throw another bomb, killing himself and mortally wounding the tsar. The tsar, bleeding heavily, was taken back to the Winter Palace, where he died a few hours later.
A temporary shrine was erected on the site of the attack while plans and fundraising for a more permanent memorial were undertaken. In order to build a permanent shrine on the exact spot where the assassination took place, it was decided[citation needed] to narrow the canal so that the section of road on which the tsar had been driving could be included within the walls of the church. An elaborate shrine, in the form of a ciborium, was constructed at the end of the church opposite the altar, on the exact place of Alexander's assassination. It is embellished with topaz, lazurite and other semi-precious stones, making a striking contrast with the simple cobblestones of the old road, which are exposed in the floor of the shrine.
