Scarborough is a resort town on England’s North Sea coast. Its 2 bays with sandy beaches are split by a headland bearing the 12th-century Scarborough Castle. The Victorian Central Tramway funicular train links the town centre with South Bay and its harbour. The Rotunda Museum explores local coastal geology. Scarborough SEA LIFE Sanctuary’s marine displays and the Peasholm Park Japanese gardens are behind North Bay.
Scarborough is a town on the North Sea coast of North Yorkshire, England. Historically part of the North Riding of Yorkshire, the town lies between 10–230 feet (3–70 m) above sea level, rising steeply northward and westward from the harbour onto limestone cliffs. The older part of the town lies around the harbour and is protected by a rocky headland.
With a population of just over 61,000, Scarborough is the largest holiday resort on the Yorkshire coast. The town of Scarborough has fishing and service industries, including a growing digital and creative economy, as well as being a tourist destination. Inhabitants of the town are known as Scarborians.
The most striking feature of the town's geography is a high rocky promontory pointing eastward into the North Sea. The promontory supports the 11th century ruins of Scarborough Castle and separates the seafront into two bays, to the north and south. To the south-west of the town, beside the York to Scarborough railway line, is an ornamental lake known as Scarborough Mere. In the 20th century the Mere was a popular park, with rowing boats, canoes and a miniature pirate ship – the Hispaniola – on which passengers were taken to 'Treasure Island' to dig for doubloons.

William McTaggart (1835 – 1910) Scottish ✽ Francis Goya / Scarborough fair
Thank you everyone for watching and for comments! ༺❀༻ All the best!
William McTaggart (1835-1910) is one of Scotland’s most popular and celebrated landscape painters, who created powerful and enduring images of Scotland. The artist was born at Aros in Kintyre in 1835 and his upbringing in this rural setting would remain with him for the rest of his life. At twelve years old McTaggart was apprenticed to the Glasgow apothecary Dr John Buchanan, an important figure in his early career who recognised and encouraged the boy’s artistic talent. Buchanan introduced McTaggart to Glasgow artist Daniel Macnee, who suggested McTaggart seek a formal art education.

Harold and Laura Knight ✽ Francis Goya / Scarborough fair
Harold Knight (1874-1961), Artist; husband of Dame Laura Knight
Harold Knight was a painter of portraits and interiors. Born in Nottingham, the son of an architect, he studied at Nottingham School of Art and for a year in Paris at the Académie Julian. On his return Knight settled at Staithes on the Yorkshire coast. He married Laura Johnson in 1903 and spent several years with her in Holland studying the Dutch masters, particularly Rembrandt and Vermeer. Knight exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1896 and at the International Society; he also exhibited with Laura Knight at the Leicester Galleries in 1906. He was elected an Associate of the Royal Academy in 1928, and became a Royal Academician in 1937.
Dame Laura Knight (1877-1970), Artist
Knight studied at Nottingham School of Art in 1900, and there met Harold Knight. After marrying in 1903, they joined an artists' colony at Staithes, Yorkshire, before moving in 1908 to Newlyn, Cornwall. In 1929 she was created Dame of the British Empire, and in 1936 became the first woman elected to full membership of the Royal Academy. Her subjects included Gypsies, dancers and circus performers. During the war, her popularity and distinguished career made her an obvious choice for the War Artists Advisory Committee, who tasked British artists with recording the war. In 1945 she asked to record the trial of Nazi war criminals in Nuremberg. Her 1965 retrospective at the RA was the first accorded to a woman.
Henry John Yeend King (1855-1924) ✽ Francis Goya / Scarborough Fair
Thank you everyone for watching and for comments! ༺❀༻ All the best
Henry John Yeend King was a London landscape and rustic genre painter, who spent three years in a glassworks before devoting his life to his art. He studied under William Bromley and also with Bonnat and Cormon in Paris.
Yeend King was typical of many late Victorian painters of rustic genre, often painting garden scenes with pretty girls. However, his robust 'plein air' technique and bold palette were obviously the influence of his Paris training. He married the sister of Robert Gallon's wife.
He exhibited widely between 1874 and 1924, including the Royal Academy, Suffolk Street, New Watercolour Society, Grosvenor Gallery, as well as in the provinces. He was elected RBA in 1879 and RI in 1886, where he later became Vice-President. He was also a member of the Royal Institute of Oil Painters.
Works by this artist are in the Tate Gallery, Walker Art Gallery, Reading, Rochdale and Sheffield Galleries.
