Berlin Deutscher Dom Schiller Denkmal Konzerthaus
Berlin at the so called Gendarmenmarkt with Deutscher Dom (German Cathedral), Schiller sculpture, Konzerthaus (Concert House), built in the 18th century, except the Schiller sculpture in the 19th. One may reach it very good with one of the excellent (and environmental friendly) bicycle taxis, for example going from the Brandenburger Tor (Brandenburg Gate) - it's only some 100.s of meters from there, but a little bit offside the normal routes

Alexander Gauland's controversial speech at the 2017 Kyffhäusertreffen, AfD, English subtitles
This speech takes a while to get going, be sure to watch until the end. For notes about this speech see below (I will also post them as a pinned comment in the comment section for discussion)
This is quite an old speech (2nd of September 2017, three weeks before the general election). Gauland's comment about WW2 soldiers attracted a lot of attention at the time.
00:01 The Kyffhäuser are a range of hills on the border between Thuringia and Saxony.
00:18 Björn Höcke is the leader of the AfD in Thuringia. He was a leading figure behind the shift in 2015 that saw the AfD go from being a classical liberal, eurosceptic, anti-euro party largely populated by free market economists, into the national conservative, anti-immigration party it is today. Höcke is probably the most controversial person in the AfD and is often described as a radical by the left and by the media (some within the AfD have also criticised him).
00:19 The two kaisers - presumably Wilhelm I (reigned 1871-88) and Wilhelm II (reigned 1888-1918).
00:30 Bismarck era 1871-90 (he was chancellor of the new unified Germany during those years). This was a golden age in German history when the country was prosperous and Bismarck managed a successful foreign policy that maintained peace in Europe. Bismarck was also chancellor of Prussia from 1862-71 and was instrumental in the unification of Germany during those years.
00:38 German unification 1871.
01:05 Frederick II, Holy Roman Emperor from 1220-50, from the Hohenstaufen dynasty. Was know as stupor mundi (wonder of the world). Spent most of his life in Italy (he was also King of Sicily).
01:20 There is a large monument in the Kyffhäuser hills to Wilhelm I. Also featured in this monument is a smaller statue of Frederick I Barbarossa (who is supposed to be sleeping in the Kyffhäusers, to awake one day). Gauland may be confusing Frederick I and Frederick II here (although the legend of the sleeping emperor did originally apply to Frederick II).
01:48 Frederick I was also a member of the Hohenstaufen dynasty and reigned 1155-90 so Gauland isn't entirely wrong here, even if he is mixing up the two emperors. He is saying the Kyffhäuser monument combines this great medieval era (the Hohenstaufen era) and the Bismarck era (Wilhelm I was kaiser during the Bismarck era).
02:03 Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, 1749-1832, writer, scientist, polymath.
02:21 Heinrich Heine, 1797-1856, poet and writer.
03:22 Martin Luther, 1483-1546, Protestant reformation.
03:27 Gotthold Ephraim Lessing, 1729-81, writer, philosopher.
04:10 Aydan Özoğuz (SPD) is the integration minister he is referring to. In response to Özoğuz's comment (May 2017), Gauland spoke about disposing of her (dumping her) in Anatolia (entsorgen was the word he used), in a speech he gave in Eichsfeld. That caused a lot of controversy at the time.
05:12 Johann Sebastian Bach, 1685-1750, composer.
05:17 Friedrich Schiller, 1759-1805, poet, polymath, playwright. Heinrich von Kleist, 1777-1811, playwright and writer. Franz Schubert 1797-1828, composer.
08:13 FAZ = Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, taz = Die Tageszeitung (both newspapers).
09:20 Sigmar Gabriel, SPD leader 2013-17.
11:31 On election night in September 2013, Merkel was handed a small German flag while celebrating victory onstage. She placed the flag off the stage, and then shook her head at the person who had given it to her.
12:03 Helmut Schmidt (SPD) was chancellor of West Germany from 1974-82. In 2017, in the context of a drive by defence minister Ursula von der Leyen (CDU) to erase all links between the modern German armed forces (Bundeswehr) and the Nazi era armed forces (Wehrmacht), a photograph of Schmidt in a Wehrmacht uniform was removed from a dormitory in the Bundeswehr academy in Hamburg (the academy is named after him). Social Democratic Party = SPD (Socialdemocratic Party of Deutschland).
12:49 Claus von Stauffenberg, leader of the July plot to kill Hitler. Erwin Rommel, WW2 general.
12:54 Mars-le-Tour and Sedan were great victories over the French in the War of 1870 (Franco-Prussian War).
12:56 Cambrai and Verdun were battles in WW1. At Cambrai (November 1917) the Germans repulsed a British attack involving hundreds of tanks, and then launched a successful counterattack.
Verdun was a failed German attempt to take a French fortress in 1916. Verdun is notable for the high number of casualties both sides suffered (almost 1 million in total).
14:20 reproach means criticise / blame / call out.
16:05 Germany, one fatherland is a phrase associated with the protests that toppled the East German regime in 1989. (It was originally part of the lyrics of the East German national anthem, but the lyrics were later removed and only a tune played) Gauland is contrasting good nationalism (Germany, one fatherland) and bad nationalism here (Deutschland, Deutschland, über alles)

Walking in Frankfurt am Main {Durch die Parkanlagen der Innenstadt}

Denkmal dran - Heinrich Heine Denkmal in Berlin

Concert Hall, French and German Domes and Gendarmenmarkt in Berlin, Germany
Shots of Concert Hall, French and German Domes and Gendarmenmarkt in Berlin, Germany.
The Gendarmenmarkt is a square in Berlin, and the site of the Konzerthaus and the French and German Cathedrals. In the centre of the square stands a monumental statue of Germany's renowned poet Friedrich Schiller. The square was created by Johann Arnold Nering at the end of the seventeenth century as the Linden-Markt and reconstructed by Georg Christian Unger in 1773. The Gendarmenmarkt is named after the cuirassier regiment Gens d'Armes, which had their stables at the square until 1773.
During World War II, most of the buildings were badly damaged or destroyed. Today all the buildings have been restored to their former state.
Berlin is the capital city of Germany and one of the 16 states of Germany. With a population of 3.4 million people, Berlin is the second most populous city proper and the seventh most populous urban area in the European Union, and is Germany's largest city. Located in northeastern Germany on the River Spree, it is the center of the Berlin-Brandenburg Metropolitan Region, which has about 4.5 million residents from over 180 nations. Due to its location in the European Plain, Berlin is influenced by a temperate seasonal climate. Around one third of the city's area is composed of forests, parks, gardens, rivers and lakes.
Germany, officially the Federal Republic of Germany is a federal parliamentary republic in western-central Europe consisting of 16 constituent states, which retain limited sovereignty. Its capital city and largest city is Berlin. Germany covers an area of 357,021 square kilometres (137,847 sq mi) and has a largely temperate seasonal climate. With 80.6 million inhabitants, it is the most populous member state in the European Union. Germany is a major economic and political power of the European continent and a historic leader in many cultural, theoretical and technical fields.
