Scuba Diving in Key Largo, Florida: Molasses Reef, French Reef, Benwood & Spiegle Grove dive sites
The most frequently visited dive site in the Key Largo National Marine Sanctuary, and likely the world, is known as Molasses Reef. During World War II, near midnight on April 9th, 1942, the Norwegian merchant freighter Benwood was on a routine path from Florida to Virginia, transporting a load of phosphate rock. It was running with no lights to avoid being spotted by German U-boats, which was common for ships throughout the war. The Spiegle Grove ship is enormous and much larger than any natural reef structure in the Keys. In fact, at the time of its sinking, the Spiegel Grove was the largest ship ever intentionally sunk to create a new reef for divers, and it remains one of the largest ships ever scuttled for that purpose.

FREEDIVING Christ of the Abyss ( Key Largo ) HD
In shallow water adjacent to John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park, “Christ of the Abyss” rests at a depth of approximately 25 feet at a site called the Key Largo Dry Rocks in the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary.
Donated to the Underwater Society of America in 1961 by Italian scuba entrepreneur Egidi Cressi, the statue is the third bronze casting of sculptor Guido Galletti’s “Il Cristo Degli Abissi,” translated in English to Christ of the Abyss and also called Christ of the Deep.

Best Snorkel Trip in the Florida Keys | Looe Key National Marine Sanctuary
Snorkeling at Bahia Honda State Park at Looe Key Reef. Today we are going snorkeling out of Bahia Honda State Park to Looe Key National Marine Sanctuary, Looe Key Reef, in the Florida Keys is an amazing experience. You get to see sharks and Goliath groupers nearly every time and then spotted eagle rays and all sorts of other tropical fish live there. This is the oldest protected portion of the reef system in the Florida Keys and it is booming with life!

Key West Free Dive Snorkel at Ft. Zachary Taylor
On our most recent Key West trip we stopped at Ft. Zachary Taylor beach where our buddy suggested we do some snorkeling. This was the most amount of fish in a small area I have ever seen on a snorkel! It is a quick swim out from the shore to the rocks and prepare to be amazed. Large schools of fish, lobsters, colorful and tropical fish all within a small area. The park has a snack bar and gear rental, so don't worry about bringing a ton of stuff with you. This isn't a heavy tourist beach compared to other parts of Key West. I hope you enjoy the sights and snorkel as much as I did!

Undersea Lunacy in the Florida Keys
No Compass is Needed for Navigating the Keys' quirky underwater fun. The Florida Keys are widely acclaimed for offbeat celebrations, and divers can find quirky, uniquely marine activities along the island chain.
Famous for being an underwater nuptial niche, the continental United States' only living coral barrier reef offers wedding party and guests the opportunity to don boutonnières and bathing suits to tie the knot with exotic sea creatures in attendance.
Annual challenges beneath the sea include Key Largo's Underwater Pumpkin Carving Contest every October, egg-sploring for hidden eggs during the Underwater Easter Egg Hunt and racing along the 523-foot-long Gen. Hoyt S. Vandenberg with diver propulsion vehicles during the Vandenberg Underwater Grand Prix each May.
Costumed mermaids, The Snorkeling Elvises, an offbeat Alice in Waterland tea party and an underwater band complete with tuba all have been spotted over the years at the Lower Keys Underwater Music Festival. The submerged songfest is held each July at Looe Key Reef, an area of the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary approximately six miles south of Big Pine Key.
Offbeat though these activities may be, many carry a serious message of reef preservation and diver awareness, emphasizing ways to enjoy the reef while minimizing impacts on the underwater environment.

Best Spot for Snorkeling in Key Largo Florida | Molasses Reef
This video covers my favorite reef to freedive and snorkel at in Key Largo, Florida. It's located near John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park.
Exploring the amazing coral reefs in Key Largo is one of the best things to do when visiting the Florida Keys!
Below is the link to the Rainbow Reef Dive Center. They were the dive company we used for this trip. Unfortunately all of Key Largos reefs are far from shore so they require a dive boat to explore.
Please comment below if you have other reefs in Key Largo you enjoy! I would love to hear about them.
