Siberian ice swimmer Vitaly Panasiuc swam across the Ob River in Novosibirsk on Tuesday in honour of Russian President Vladimir Putin's 62nd birthday. Despite the air temperature being just four degrees Celsius (40 degrees Fahrenheit), Panasiuc scaled the icy water while carrying a Russian flag, swimming under the Bugrinsky Bridge which Putin is set to officially open on Wednesday.
Vitaly Panasiuc sent his personal greetings to Putin wishing him happiness, health, a long life and fruitful service to the Russian state.
Panasiuc is the leader of a group called the Regional Federation of Winter Swimming, nicknamed the Polar Bears, and married in an ice hole earlier this year. He achieved a personal record on April 8, 2012 by swimming 2,500 metres (8202 feet) through ice-cold water in one hour 12 minutes.
