Ralph Cristiansen Jr. 2018 IGFA Fishing Hall of Fame
Ralph Christiansen Jr.
Ralph Christiansen Jr., was a world-class blue marlin angler and ardent billfish conservationist. Born in Puerto Rico in 1942, Christiansen started fishing at the age of four. His passion for fishing was passed down from his father, who helped found the venerable Club Náutico de San Juan in 1930.
Growing up, Ralph was a fixture on the docks at Club Náutico during the days when line was removed from fishing reels at the end of each day to be washed and dried before being re-spooled the next day. He gravitated to the club’s fishing captains and mates trying to learn as much as he could about marlin fishing from bait rigging to where the fish could be found. By age 30, he would become the youngest Commodore in the history of the Club Náutico de San Juan, an institution to which he devoted much of his life. His many contributions included construction of the club’s first dry dock and serving as tournament chairman for the San Juan International Billfish Tournament, the world’s longest continually running Atlantic blue marlin tournament.
Although he was a renowned offshore angler, Christiansen would fish for just about anything that swam. He enjoyed fly fishing greatly and caught salmon in Alaska and as well as bonefish in locations such as Cuba, British Virgin Islands and The Bahamas. His real passion was billfish on conventional tackle, especially blue marlin, which he held in the highest esteem. And it was blue marlin that fueled his desire to travel throughout the Atlantic to pursue this iconic species wherever and whenever the bite was hot.
Ralph was a prominent figure at the seasonal Atlantic hotspots of Venezuela, St. Thomas, Madeira and the Dominican Republic. During one day in September of 1986, he and his fishing partner caught and released nine blue marlin off of St. Thomas and totaled 66 of the 162 blue marlin caught there during a 19-day period of time.
Ralph kept an exceptionally detailed fishing log, recording details such as lure or bait type, time of day and position in the spread in which each of his blue marlin was caught. He caught a total of 764 blue marlin in his lifetime, a feat that puts him in the upper echelon of marlin fishing history. During the mid-1970’s, he became concerned about declining marlin stocks and implemented a strict catch and release policy on his boat Pescador that continued throughout the remainder of his life. He is also credited for helping convert the San Juan International Billfish Tournament to a catch and release format.
Christiansen was appointed to the IGFA International Committee of Representatives in 1978 and later to the IGFA Board of Trustees in 1996. Ralph also helped found The Billfish Foundation in 1996, as well as the Puerto Rico Game Fish Association, where he served as President for three years. Tragically, Christiansen passed away in 2009 in a plane crash while flying back from a marlin fishing trip in the Dominican Republic.
For his exemplary efforts in billfish conservation and his exceptional angling achievements, the IGFA welcomes Ralph Christiansen Jr. into the IGFA Fishing Hall of Fame.

If You See Square Waves, Get Out of the Water!
There are some waves that you really don’t ever want to encounter when you’re swimming in the ocean. Square waves look like a giant chess board over the ocean. It's pretty awesome but incredibly dangerous.

SUMMARY:
- If you look off the western coast of France, you’ll see the Isle of Rhe. The coolest part about it is what you see just beyond the shore: square waves. This strange wave pattern looks like a giant chess board over the ocean.
- When two different swells coming from opposite directions meet, it’s known as a cross sea. This is what generates these square waves you see near the Isle of Rhe.
- Because these two seas have totally different weather conditions, a unique pattern emerges when they collide. They create a riptide that’s stronger than your average wave - way stronger than what you’ve probably experienced at the beach with regular waves.
- There have been a handful of cases where people got caught in the cross sea, but, thankfully and luckily, they managed to get out safely.
- These square waves have become somewhat famous over time given that there’s really no other place in the world that boasts a cross sea like this one.
- The Boiling Lake on the Island of Dominica is one body of water you’ll definitely want to stay away from. From high heat to strong gas emissions, there are plenty of reasons to stay out of The Boiling Lake.
- You’ll probably want to steer clear of the town of West End on Grand Bahama Island. This deadly beach is known for being one of the most shark-infested beaches in the world.
- While the south and west coasts of Barbados are ideal for swimming and snorkeling, the east and north beaches have incredibly strong tides that can be quite treacherous.
- Condado Beach in Puerto Rico is a desirable destination in the city of San Juan. However, the beach’s mighty waves and powerful current make this a very dangerous place to go swimming.

The Crooked Customs Agents Are... NOT in Puerto Rico! | Apology and Correction
I had my story crossed my whole life! When my dad would go on fishing trips, he would always talk about the hassle with crooked customs agents. I always thought he was talking about the agents he encountered when he returned, but that was not the case.
The US Customs agents were honest and true. The Dominican Republic Customs agents were crooked and corrupt!
Apologies to the Agents in PR and any shame this might have caused, we look forward to meeting you guys when we check into Puerto Rico in a few years ;)

It Happened Again! [EP 18] Sailing Millennial Falcon | Sailing Around The World
This episode we shake off the lines and continue our journey east towards beautiful La Parguera. Unfortunately for us 5 miles from our departure the wind picked up and our prop shaft decided to fall away from the engine!
We managed to limp our way into the bay of Boquerón, and with a little help from our friends we made it to anchor. After a few hours of work we managed to get the shaft reassembled (correctly this time!). The next morning we continued our journey with a short test run and a day later we made it to La Parguera without incident.

She pinched and pinched herself until she was producing milk, and gave it to everyone - but then she couldn't do it anymore and everybody had nothing else to eat, she had to stop. (question: did they kill her?) No, she's here. But there was another woman who was also giving milk and happy to do it, but then there were about seven guys who had gone crazy, and wouldn't leave her alone...... And she was shouting leave me alone, I can't do it anymore, I don't have anymore milk, and then they were saying to her come, we don't want to see you cry, let us hold you.....

STORYLINE:
A would-be migrant who survived at sea for nearly two weeks described scenes of horror Tuesday, detailing how more than 40 people died during an abortive journey to Puerto Rico and how women who were unable to give breast milk were thrown overboard by desperate men.
Many began to lose their minds when food and water ran out after three days at sea, said Faustina Santana, one of 33 migrants who were found alive Tuesday near the small fishing village of Nagua, not far from where the boat set off for the US territory.
Although no bodies have been found, survivors said at least 45 people died during the journey. Two died Tuesday on the way to hospitals where many of the migrants are being treated for dehydration.
Many are still unconscious.
Santana said the 40-foot (12-meter) wooden boat left the Dominican Republic on July 29 and made it to the Puerto Rican island of Desecheo but its engine failed.
After that, the boat began drifting out to sea and it was then that desperation began to set in.
Two women offered their breast milk to passengers. One who refused was apparently thrown overboard by the male passengers, said Santana, who was unable to give milk because she was not lactating.
Besides the milk, the passengers shared one coconut they found floating in the ocean.
Rafael Emilio Chalas, the director of the Antonio Yapor Hospital in Nagua - 112 miles (180 kilometres) northeast of Santo Domingo - told the Dominican radio station Z101.3 on Tuesday night that some of the people said they resorted to cannibalism to survive.
There has been a huge influx of Dominican migrants to Puerto Rico in the past year as inflation in the country has topped 30 percent, unemployment has reached 16 percent and blackouts continue to plague the Caribbean nation.
More than seven-thousand Dominican migrants have been detained trying to reach wealthier Puerto Rico since October 1 - more than twice the number for the previous 12 months.

Eagle Ray in Culebra, Puerto Rico.MOV
We saw this Eagle Ray while snorkelling in the Culebra Nature reserve, off of Carlos Rosarrio beach. The Reef runs right up to the beach here so no boat is required. His friend is a Remora fish which kept trying to attach when the ray would get off of the bottom.
