Setsubun at Seto Jinja Shrine - the bean-throwing festival.
横浜金沢瀬戸神社の節分祭
Setsubun, with it's bean-throwing, feng-shui positioned sushi-eating, and cries of demons out, good luck in! is a widespread and joyous mix of Shinto, Taoism, Buddhism and Japanese folk traditions. I wonder though if the way it's practiced at this Shinto Shrine is an echo of the days of 'State Shinto, when Japan's indigenous religion was strictly separated from foreign influences?

The “floating torii gates” within the Seto Island Sea invites visitors to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Itsukushima Shrine (嚴島神社) located on the beautiful island of Miyajima, in Hiroshima Prefecture.
Itsukushima Shrine has been a Shinto holy site from very early times. In 1168, Taira no Kiyomori, the most powerful man in Japan during the end of the Heian Period, selected the island as the site of his clan's family shrine and built Itsukushima Shrine. The shrine complex consists of multiple buildings, including a prayer hall, a main hall and a Noh theater stage, which are connected by boardwalks and supported by pillars above the sea.
The shrine and its torii gate are unique in that they were constructed over water. Because of this they appear to float in the sea during high tide. At low tide, the water drains out of the bay. During this time, visitors have the opportunity to walk out and see the gates up close.
The shrine is located on a small inlet, while the torii gates are constructed in the Seto Inland Sea. Visitors can enjoy walking along the paths leading to the shrine while looking at the sea. After sunset, the shrine and the torii gate are illuminated. Entry into Itsukushima shrine is not permitted at night. However, visitors can enjoy the illuminated view by spending the night at one of the many ryokans (Japanese inns) on the island.
Alternatively, tourists can view the illuminated island from boat cruises. Though the length may vary, typically, cruises last thirty minutes and take passengers around the bay and through the torii gate (during high tide only). Reservations are required but can be easily made through one's ryokan or at the tourist information desk.

Miyajima Island Shrine to Nature - JVT 2012-01
The island of Miyajima lies in the Seto Inland Sea, near Hiroshima. The entire wooded island, 30 kilometers around, stands as a shrine symbolizing reverence for nature. The 1,400-year old shrine is built over the water and seems to float against a backdrop of green mountain. Each April over 400 Noh performers gather here from all over Japan for a special sacred event. The sense that they are performing in the midst of nature is especially intense at high tide, when the sea rises almost to the level of the shrine's Noh stage.

Japan Day 4 Hiroshima to Miyajima
Today we spend our last morning in Hiroshima. We list the old bank that wasn't fully destroyed by the atomic bomb. I then catch the train, then ferry to Miyajima and explore the red tori gate and the amazing island.
Itsukushima island (Miyajima), Japan
Itsukushima island near Hiroshima, Japan. 2008, is an island in the western part of the Inland Sea of Japan, located in the northwest of Hiroshima Bay. It is popularly known as Miyajima (宮島?), which in Japanese means the Shrine Island
Life in a Zen 禅 Buddhist monastry in 1959, part 3
Final part of film about life in a Soto Zen Buddhist monastry in Yokohama in 1959 taken by Ijsbrand Michael Rogge. As to the novices smoking. Remember that this was filmed at a time that practically everyone smoked - the dangers were not widely known. I have never smoked, though, as informed people knew of the dangers to health.

Japan Vlog: Hiroshima and Miyajima Island | Beauxoxo
My last spots on my trip to Japan were Hiroshima and Miyajima Island.
Travelling from Kyoto to Hiroshima I really wasn't sure what to expect. As soon as I reached the bustling train station of Hiroshima I was really taken by the striking modernity of the city, the huge skyscrapers, and the hustle and bustle of daily life. However at the same time the city overwhelmed me with the emotion about its past since Hiroshima is more known as being the first city in history to be targeted and destroyed by a nuclear weapon killing thousands of people within seconds.
I found my visit to Hiroshima incredibly emotional but I wouldn't have missed on visiting at all because it is a city that never forgets the past and which fights for everlasting peace. And that to me has left a lasting impression.
My next stop after Hiroshima was the beatiful Miyajima Island. Truly one of the most scenic spots in Japan, which has long been regarded as an Island of Gods on the beautiful Seto Inland Sea. It is such a tranquil spot and where the Itsukushima Shrine can be seen, a World Heritage site, with many more stunning shrines, temples and historical monuments. Oh and some cute deer roaming around, because, you know, Japan!
Thank you so much for watching my Japanese series- I hoped you've loved following my journey! I hope it has made you want to explore for yourself :) xo

About Hiroshima:
The symbol of world peace, Hiroshima. Miya-jima Island symbolized by the Great Torii Gate in the Sea.
Hiroshima is situated at the center of the Chugoku region in western Honshu, the main island of Japan. In'no-shima Island and 150 other islands are located in the in the nearby Seto Inland Sea.
The Chugoku Mountains, rising to a height of some 1,000 meters, extend from east to west in the northern part of Hiroshima, with highways and national routes crossing mountain passes to connect the prefecture with areas along the Sea of Japan. The plains are narrow and the coastlines are mostly saw-toothed coasts, with mountains drawing close to the shore.
Nature abounds in Hiroshima Prefecture, which is surrounded both by ocean and mountains. Attractions include Setonaikai (Seto Inland Sea) National Park, Hibadogo-Taishaku Quasi-National Park, and West Chugoku Mountains Quasi-National Park. Hiroshima City is known to the world as the first city ever attacked by an atomic bomb. There you will find the Hiroshima Atomic Bomb Dome(Genbaku Dome), which symbolizes the importance of world peace. Adjacent to the Genbaku Dome, which has been inscribed as a World Cultural Heritage Site, is the Peace Memorial Park.
Itsuku-shima-jinja, the shrine inscribed as a World Cultural Heritage Site along with the Genbaku Dome in 1996, is located on Miya-jima Island. It is said to be one of the three most beautiful sights in Japan, and has been designated as a nation's historic site. Its symbol is the Great Torii Gate (shrine gate) that stands in the sea.
