Gutzlaff Signal Tower or Waitan Observatory / 外滩信号台 (The Bund / 外滩 / 外灘)
Known as the Gutzlaff Signal Tower / Bund Weather Tower / Bund Signal Tower / Waitan Observatory / 外滩信号台, the tower is a major landmark in Shanghai's Bund. It is a 36.8m tall (50m focal height) signal station built in Art Deco style, originally intended to provide weather information to ships on the Huangpu river, in particular typhoon warnings.
A signal station was first built in the Bund area by the French in 1865, soon after the cession of Shanghai's foreign concession. It was rebuilt in 1884, at the time of the establishment of the Zikawei Observatory by French Jesuits. The current structure was built in 1907, and named after Karl Gützlaff. The tower signaled weather reports five times a day, and gave emergency flag signals in case of typhoon or sudden inclement weather. Its operation was discontinued in 1956.
The tower was moved 23 m to its current location in 1993, and was reconstructed in 1999. Currently, the first floor houses a museum of history of the Bund, and the second floor a cafe.
Dense Fog Envelopes East, Central China Provinces
Heavy fog shrouded parts of east and central China on Monday, causing disruptions to traffic throughout the regions.
Authorities in east China's Anhui Province on Monday morning upgraded its alert for fog from yellow to orange, the second-highest alert level, as visibility in some areas was less than 100 meters.
The number of cities and counties with orange alerts rose from 11 to 18.
Many highways were closed, and about 30 arriving and departing flights at Xinqiao Airport in Anhui's provincial capital, Hefei, were affected.
In central China's Henan Province, 128 highway toll stations were closed as heavy fog reduced the visibility to 200 meters to 500 meters.

China's first dark matter satellite performing better than expected in first year
China's first dark matter satellite has been in space for a year and is far exceeding all of its performance expectations.
Twelve months in operation as of Saturday, Wukong has detected 1.8 billion dark matter particles, among them more than one million super high-energy electrons which are crucial to the study of dark matter's annihilation.
The four major parts of the payload are operating under normal conditions with everything functioning properly.
Wukong is named after a formidable figure of Chinese legend – the Monkey King. Its latest findings will be released at the beginning of 2017.
Launched on December 17, 2015 on a Long March 2-D rocket, Wukong was designed for a three-year mission. It will scan space nonstop in all directions in the first two years and then focus on areas where dark matter is most likely to be observed in the third.
The dark matter hypothesis plays a central role in the current modeling of cosmic structure formation and galaxy formation and evolution.

Typhoon Merbok Batters Hong Kong
Typhoon Merbok had pounded the metropolis of Hong Kong, sparing it major damage on Monday night.
The Hong Kong Observatory downgraded the storm from Tropical Cyclone No.8 to No.3 on early Tuesday morning. Public transport, schools and businesses have resumed normal operations. Altogether 239 homeless people sought refuge at 22 temporary shelters of the Home Affairs Department. And a total of 10 injured residents were admitted to public hospitals. By 5:00 am, 44 flights were canceled and another 350 delayed, according to the city's aviation authority.
But the observatory raised the thunderstorm alert and issued the red rainstorm alert, indicating that precipitation at more than 50 millimeters per hour is likely to lash the city for a few more hours.

Monsoon Rains in Hong Kong
torrential down pours as we stand in a bus shelter waiting for the rain to let up near the Stanley Market in China.
Stanley Market is a street market in Stanley on Hong Kong Island, Hong Kong. The street is a typical example of a traditional old open-air market in Hong Kong and has since become a major tourist attraction, well known for its bargains. Many of the stalls or shops in Stanley Market sell Hong Kong souvenirs as well as clothing - particularly silk garments and traditional Chinese dress - toys, ornaments, luggage, souvenirs, paintings, and Chinese arts and crafts. The market grew out of Chek Chu Tsuen, a village nearby.[1]
There are several small Chinese restaurants in the marketplace and a small old Dai pai dong. There are a variety of restaurants along the seafront too.
The nearby Stanley Main Street offers many larger restaurants, both Western and Chinese, and is a popular spot to see and be seen on the weekends.

Bedok Reservoir, Temasek Polytechnic and A Sudden Thunderstorm / Walk 3 / Bedok Reservoir to Temasek Polytechnic / Singapore / 20 December 2018, Thursday
-
I spent a year and a half of my life at the Tampines campus of Temasek Polytechnic. We were the first batch of design students to be uprooted from the Stirling Road Campus and transplanted to the spanking new site designed by the late James Stirling. The site of the campus is actually pretty great, with its close proximity to Bedok Reservoir, which I regretted not walking around more when I was studying there. This is a walk that begins along the reservoir, across from Temasek Polytechnic, slowly looping into the campus itself. You can see that I'm intent on showing you the interiors of one single building. This is the building of the Design School, where I had graduated with a Diploma in Visual Communication, back in 1997 (!). I'm glad I chose to walk into TP today. If I had continued, I would have been completely drenched by the sudden downpour! The walk ends upon exiting the campus, and standing at the very spot where I used to wait for Bus 69 to bring me to Bedok. Again, shot on the wonderful DJI Osmo Pocket!

A Symphony of Lights, Tsim Sha Tsui - Hong Kong
The show is organised by the Hong Kong Tourism Board and is displayed every night with good weather at 8 pm Hong Kong Time (UTC+8). An orchestration of music, decoration lights, laser light displays, and pyrotechnic fireworks, the multimedia light and sound show lasts for around 14 minutes and was conceptualised, created, and installed by LaserVision.
The best vantage points include the Avenue of Stars on the Tsim Sha Tsui waterfront, on the waterfront promenade outside the Golden Bauhinia Square in Wan Chai and on sightseeing ferries (i.e. Star Ferry) running across the Victoria Harbour. The Show's music and narration live at the Avenue of Stars and the promenade outside the Golden Bauhinia Square in Wan Chai every night. On Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays the narration is in English, while it is in Mandarin on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, and Cantonese on Sundays.
Special pyrotechnic fireworks will be added to the show on the rooftop of participating buildings on both sides of the harbour or stages off at the Tsim Sha Tsui waterfront. They are used on special events or holidays, like Chinese New Year and Christmas.
When Tropical Cyclone Warning Signal No.3 or above or a Red or Black Rainstorm Warning Signal is issued by the Hong Kong Observatory at or after 3 pm on any given day, the show is suspended for that evening, even if the warning is subsequently rescinded prior to the 8 pm start time. The show may also be suspended in emergencies without prior notice. The show is also suspended during days of mourning and the night of Earth Hour.

Kempegowda or Majestic Bus Station, Bangalore
Kempegowda Bus Station, more commonly known as Majestic Bus Station, is a large bus station in central Bangalore, India. It is located opposite the Bangalore City Railway Station. It is bordered by Seshadri Road to the north, Danavanthri Road to the east, Tank Bund Road to the south and Gubbi Thotadappa Road to the west. This bus station provides connectivity to almost all the areas of Bangalore. One side of the bus station is used for intra-city buses by the Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) while the other side is used by out-station buses operated by various state road transport corporations.
The bus station was initially called Majestic Bus Station or Majestic. It was later changed to Kempegowda Bus Station in honour of Kempe Gowda I, the founder of Bangalore. Buses terminating at the station usually display signs that show Kempegowda Bus Station or KBS. However, most people still refer to the station as Majestic. The Kempegowda Station was built in 1980 to handle 600 buses. As of 2012, 4,500 BMTC buses ferry 800,000 commuters daily in 16,500 trips through the terminal. Approximately, 55 buses enter the terminal every minute.
Bangalore is the capital of the Indian state of Karnataka located on the Deccan Plateau in the south-eastern part of Karnataka. Bangalore is India's third most populous city and fifth-most populous urban agglomeration. Bangalore is well known as a hub for India's information technology sector. It is among the top 10 preferred entrepreneurial locations in the world. A succession of South Indian dynasties ruled the region of Bangalore until in 1537 AD, Kempé Gowdā—a feudatory ruler under the Vijayanagara Empire—established a mud fort considered to be the foundation of modern Bangalore. Following transitory occupation by the Marāthās and Mughals, the city remained under the Mysore kingdom, which is now a part of the Indian state of Karnataka. Bangalore continued to be a cantonment of the British and a major city of the Princely State of Mysore which existed as a nominally sovereign entity of the British Raj. Following the independence of India in 1947, Bangalore became the capital of Mysore state, and remained capital when the new Indian state of Karnataka was formed in 1956.
As a large and growing metropolis, Bangalore is home to many well-recognized colleges and research institutions in India. Numerous public sector heavy industries, software companies, aerospace, telecommunications, and defence organisations are located in the city. Bangalore is known as the Silicon Valley of India because of its position as the nation's leading IT exporter. A demographically diverse city, Bangalore is a major economic and cultural hub and the second fastest growing major metropolis in India.
