Isla Guadalupe, Guadalupe Island or Guadalupe? What’s In a Name?
For shark divers across the globe one little island off the coast of Baja, Mexico has become a mecca for diving with great white sharks. But, what do you call this volcanic rock 220 miles from San Diego, California?
Isla Guadalupe, Guadalupe Island or Guadalupe?
According to Wikipedia, Guadalupe Island goes by two common names:
“Guadalupe Island or Isla Guadalupe is a volcanic island located 241 kilometres (150 mi) off the west coast of Mexico‘s Baja California Peninsula and some 400 kilometres (250 mi) southwest of the city of Ensenada in the state of Baja California, in the Pacific Ocean. The two other Mexican island groups in the Pacific Ocean that are not on the continental shelf are Revillagigedo Islands and Rocas Alijos.”
Guadalupe Island was a major destination for Russian and American fur hunters seeking the Guadalupe Island fur seal in the 18th and 19th centuries, until they were nearly extinct by 1844. The northern elephant seal was also hunted for the oil in its blubber, but managed to survive and the seals remain today. Goats were brought to the island in the 19th century by European whalers and sealers for provisions when stopping over. Their numbers have fluctuated over the years, peaking at 100,000 and in more recent times being about 20,000. Guadalupe Island has been a nature conservancy area since 1928, making it one of the oldest reserves in Mexico.
Wildlife at Guadalupe Island
Guadalupe Island shares the California chaparral and woodlands ecoregion with the Channel Islands of California in the United States, but the island was at one time practically denuded of all plants higher than a few centimeters by up to 100,000 feral goats. The goats have continued to be a problem, and their destruction of any living thing has actually caused desertification on the island in the long-term. In more recent years, much of this has been prevented with goat fence installation, and the island is recovering. As of June 2005, the Mexican government has almost completed a round-up and evacuation of the remaining goat population. Many island or marine species that reside on or near Guadalupe Island also frequent the Channel Islands, and vice versa. In stark contrast to the rampant extinction of terrestrial life that happened at the same time, Guadalupe has been the last refuge for the northern elephant seal and the Guadalupe fur seal in the 1890s. The island has been a pinniped sanctuary since 1975, creating a large pinniped population – therefore, Guadalupe Island is now one of the best spots in the world for sightings of the great white shark.

Diving / Snorkeling La Jolla Cove (with Sea Lions) San Diego California
Amazing Diving / Snorkeling La Jolla Cove with wild Sea Lions, San Diego California. Freediving the cove.
La Jolla is a hilly, seaside community within the city of San Diego, California, occupying 7 miles (11 km) of curving coastline along the Pacific Ocean within the northern city limits. The population reported in the 2010 census was 46,781.
La Jolla is surrounded on three sides by ocean bluffs and beaches and is located 12 miles north of Downtown San Diego and 40 miles south of Orange County.
La Jolla Cove is a small, picturesque cove and beach that is surrounded by cliffs in La Jolla, San Diego, California. The Cove is protected as part of a marine reserve; underwater it is very rich in marine life, and is popular with snorkelers, swimmers and scuba divers.
The swells that often roll in from the open ocean here can be rather large and strong, and so being in the water at the Cove is not always suitable for people who do not have good water skills. The water temperature is also often a little colder than the average San Diego beach, and the beach has the disadvantage that the dry sand area is very small at high tide. In contrast, during very low tides, a lot of interesting tide pools are revealed at the Cove.
The California sea lion (Zalophus californianus) is a coastal eared seal native to western North America. It is one of six species of sea lion. Its natural habitat ranges from southeast Alaska to central Mexico, including the Gulf of California. Sea lions are sexually dimorphic; males are larger than females, and have a thicker neck, and protruding sagittal crest. They mainly haul-out on sandy or rocky beaches, but they also frequent manmade environments such as marinas and wharves. Sea lions feed on a number of species of fish and squid, and are preyed on by orcas and white sharks.
California sea lions have a polygynous breeding pattern. From May to August, males establish territories and try to attract females with which to mate. Females are free to move in between territories, and are not coerced by males. Mothers nurse their pups in between foraging trips. Sea lions communicate with numerous vocalizations, notably with barks and mother-pup contact calls. Outside their breeding season, sea lions spend much of their time at sea, but they come to shore to molt.
Sea lions are particularly intelligent, can be trained to perform various tasks and display limited fear of humans if accustomed to them. Because of this, California sea lions are a popular choice for public display in zoos, circuses and oceanariums, and are trained by the United States Navy for certain military operations. The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) lists the species as Least Concern due to its abundance. To protect fish, the US states of Oregon and Washington engage in annual kill quotas of sea lions

This video shows how awesome scuba diving underwater can be.
Many people have that misunderstanding about diving. I always get that question, Aren't you afraid of sharks? I've been scuba diving for ten year. I hear more people dieing by drunk driver or other causes everytime I hear the news. but never by sharks.
Places to Dive
La Jolla Shores: La Jolla Shores can be found by turning west off Interstate 5 toward La Jolla. From La Jolla Shores Drive turn onto Avenida de la Playa, which leads directly to the beach. Straight offshore, it's flat and sandy, perfect for beginners. Further offshore are the dark blue depths of the La Jolla
Isla Los Coronados: These three islands are actually off the coast of Mexico, so the only way to get there is by boat. It's an hour and a half ride to the clear waters of Los Coronados, with undersea visibilities in the 50-70 foot range. Seals, sea lions, sun stars, sea slugs, abalone, and eels populate the big boulders underwater. currents off Los Coronados run very strong.
The Yukon: On July 13, 2000, the Canadian destroyer Yukon was intentionally sunk two miles off Mission Beach, in an 600-acre underwater area known as Wreck Alley, where four other sunken vessels also rest on the bottom. At 366 feet long the Yukon makes an imposing artificial reef, and quickly attracted the fish and undersea life that has made the vessel a local favorite among divers and sport fishermen.
Point Loma Kelp Beds: There are two kelp forests off the San Diego coast, A series of unique shelves along the bottom. The depth of the beds vary from 35-80 feet, or stay relatively shallow. phenomenal visibility within the beds and their offbeat character make this a must. Local dive boats make the trip every day, and experienced skippers know the best spots to enter the water for the ideal dive.

Shark Diving Adventure in Hawaii
During our trip to Hawaii we decided to do something a little crazy. We went on an open ocean shark diving tour. (No cage) After much anticipation and some concern, the day finally arrived. Once we got in the water with these awesome creatures, there was no fear. Just a feeling of calm and peacefulness with these beautiful animals. There were about 5-6 Galapagos sharks and a sandbar shark that appeared towards the end. Such an amazing experience and one we hope to do again one day.
