Sharm El Sheikh is on a promontory overlooking the Straits of Tiran at the mouth of the Gulf of Aqaba. Its strategic importance led to its transformation from a fishing village into a major port and naval base for the Egyptian Navy. It was occupied by Israel during the Suez Crisis of 1956 and restored to Egypt in 1957. A United Nations peacekeeping force was subsequently stationed there until the 1967 Six-Day War when it was recaptured by Israel. Sharm El Sheikh remained under Israeli control until the Sinai peninsula was restored again to Egypt in 1982 after the Egypt–Israel Peace Treaty of 1979.
A hierarchical planning approach was adopted for the Gulf of Aqaba, whereby their components were evaluated and subdivided into zones, cities and centers. In accordance with this approach, the Gulf of Aqaba zone was subdivided into four cities: Taba, Nuweiba, Dahab and Sharm El Sheikh. Sharm El Sheikh city has been subdivided into five homogeneous centers, namely Nabq, Ras Nusrani, Naama Bay, Umm Sid and Sharm El Maya.
Sharm El Sheikh city, together with Naama Bay, Hay el Nour, Hadaba, Rowaysat, Montazah and Shark's Bay form a metropolitan area.
Before 1967, Sharm El Sheikh was little more than an occasional base of operations for local fishermen; the nearest permanent settlement was in Nabk, north of Ras El Nasrani (The Tiran Straits). Commercial development of the area began when the Israelis built the town of Ofira, overlooking Sharm El Maya Bay and the Nesima area, and opened the first tourist-oriented establishments in the area 6km north at Naama Bay. These included a marina hotel on the southern side of the bay, a nature field school on the northern side, diving clubs, a now well-known promenade, and the Naama Bay Hotel. The site off the shore gun emplacements at Ras Nasrani opposite Tiran Island is now a diving area.
After Sinai was restored to Egypt in 1982, the Egyptian government embarked on an initiative to encourage the continued development of the city which is now an international tourist destination. Foreign investors – some of whom had discovered the potential of the locality during the Israeli occupation – contributed to a spate of building projects. Environmental zoning laws currently limit the height of buildings in Sharm El Sheikh so as to avoid obscuring the natural beauty of the surroundings.

The Old Town, popularly known as the Old Market is a culturally rich and bustling place, full of color, sounds and scents. The Old Market Extremely popular with locals, this is a great place to go shopping and soak in the atmosphere. Sharm El Sheikh most famous items are herbs and spices, and the Old Market has oodles of them! Shop keepers are extremely kind and usually happy to both explain and haggle when it comes to thier kaleidoscope of different goods!
Take a break from the flashier side of the resort city and delve into its more established commercial core at Old Market. The set of stalls, stores, and places to eat contrasts with the city's better-known resort lifestyle. And while the market largely gears itself toward international tourism, scenes of authentic daily life remain prevalent in the areas selling fresh produce and spices. Pick up a souvenir from Old market of your trip to Egypt, choosing from the large selection of traditional textiles, trinkets, and ornaments. Sample local and international cuisine at the onsite eateries, including popular Egyptian barbecue joints serving kebabs and kofta.
The Old Market area isnt so old really! But it is the main bazaar area of Sharm El Sheikh, with many shops selling Egyptian made products and crafts. You can also find other things for sale there, like home items, fruit and vegetables. Literally everything and anything. Be prepared to haggle! A lot!
The Old Market
Want a reasonably priced local souvenir to take back home? Perhaps an ornate rug, herbs and spices, cotton or silk clothing, ceramics, a shisha (“hubbly bubbly”) pipe, jewellery or leather goods – you’ll find all things Egyptian in The Old Market, and there’s plenty of local colour to enjoy here too.
Amid busy bazaars, you’ll stumble across lovely fish restaurants, eateries selling authentic Egyptian food like Kosheree (lentils, rice and macaroni) as well as pizzerias to keep you going as you shop. On the way you’ll also see several cafés filled with men whiling away the hours smoking traditional shisha pipes. The evenings are when the Old Market is at its most charming and you can often stop and watch the buskers along the way. And don’t worry about security as the Old Market is carefully fenced off and guarded by the tourist police for your safety.
Sharm Old Market (also known as Sharm al-Maya) is the town's souq (bazaar) area, where twinkling Arabic lamps, traditional shisha pipes, and finely engraved woodwork can be found in abundance. It's best to come at sunset or later, when the worst heat of the day has dissipated, and you can shop and browse in comfort. The area is full of cheap and cheerful restaurants and cafés as well, so it's a good place to spend the entire evening. There's a distinctly different feel here than the rest of Sharm el-Sheikh — the market is imbued with a much more higgledy-piggledy local atmosphere than the rest of the city.
On the edge of the market area is the new Al-Sahaba Mosque with an imposing facade that cherry-picks influences from Fatimid, Mamluk, and Ottoman mosque styles.

Environmental zoning laws currently limit the height of buildings in Sharm El Sheikh so as to avoid obscuring the natural beauty of the surroundings.
In 2005, the resort was hit by the Sharm El Sheikh terrorist attacks, which were perpetrated by an extremist Islamist organisation targeting Egypt's tourist industry. Eighty-eight people were killed, the majority of them Egyptians, and over 200 were wounded by the attack, making it the second deadliest terrorist attack in the country's history. The deadliest terrorist attack took place in Sinai when Militants detonated a bomb inside a crowded mosque in the Sinai Peninsula on Friday and then sprayed gunfire on panicked worshipers as they fled, killing at least 305 people and wounding at least 128 others. The third deadliest was the Luxor massacre of 1997.
The city has played host to a number of important Middle Eastern peace conferences, including the 4 September 1999 agreement to restore Palestinian self-rule over the Gaza Strip. A second summit was held at Sharm on 17 October 2000 following the outbreak of the second Palestinian intifada, but it failed to end the violence. A summit was held in the city on 3 August 2005 on developments in the Arab world, such as the situation in the Arab–Israeli conflict. Again in 2007, an important ministerial meeting took place in Sharm, where dignitaries discussed Iraqi reconstruction. The World Economic Forum on the Middle East was also hosted by Sharm el-Sheikh in 2006 and 2008.
Amidst the 2011 Egyptian protests, President Hosni Mubarak reportedly went to Sharm El Sheikh and resigned there on 11 February 2011.

Blue Bus from Cairo to Sharm el Sheikh
Hi travellers,
Are you travelling around Egypt? Blue Bus is a newish company that offers transportation to the major cities. They are an alternative to Go Bus, more expensive, but it is more comfortable. In this video I show travelling from Cairo to Sharm el Sheikh.
With free wifi, snacks, entertainment and bathroom included onboard and recliner seats it does make for a comfortable journey.
Use their website (not an affiliate link) to book your next trip. I registered and used one of the hotel workers phone numbers ( you need an Egyptian phone number as part of the registration). I also had some trouble using my foreign credit card to pay (it shouldn't be as they accept Visa and MasterCard). However, I called the help line and they spoke excellent English and helped me.
I used the fawry system to pay for my ticket. Book online and choose fawry as your payment option. Then head out to find a convenience stall, usually on every corner. Ask for fawry, and say Blue Bus. It is a newish company, so they may not know this is an option. They will tell you your name and then pay ( I tend to use cash). They give you a receipt, which you just hand over at the bus terminal. I had never heard of this system before and am a big fan.
This trip cost 305LE. It is a business class seat.
Be aware when leaving your accomodation your Uber or taxi may not know where the Blue Bus terminal is, despite them saying yes I know, and take you to Go Bus. Have Google maps going and for your peace of mind make the driver stick to that route. On the Bus Blue website they provide links to the bus terminals in case your driver thinks they know better and go rouge. Hmm, am I just sharing my possible experience hehe.
Tips: Pack your passport handy in case some police official needs to see it on route
Pack your own headphones
An eye mask is essential, as not everyone closes the curtains and it is bright once the sun comes up
Phone charging cord as USB charging is provided
Use the bathroom before you get on the bus. It gets pretty well used as the trip goes on.
With on board free wifi (ask the driver for password), you can have your Uber waiting at the terminal when you arrive. If this fails you can go to the Blue Bus counter on arrival and ask them to order an Uber for you. I also had great luck with this and it saves the hassle of not knowing how much the trip should be to your accomodation to know if the waiting taxis are ridiculously overcharging you as a foreigner.
Overall, I felt very safe to fall asleep and would use this company again in a heartbeat.
