Cruising Alaska Haines
Hey Cruisers, Today we are going to take a look at a port rich with Tlingit culture and history and well known for the bald eagle population, and it just may be one of our favorite stops in Alaska. We are talking about Haines, and if you're lucky enough to visit Haines on your cruise vacation, you’re likely to quickly fall in love with the charm and natural beauty here. Heading off the dock the first stop is this handy map perfect for a few snapshots and directions.
Just off the dock, Orca Gifts is a great stop for souvenirs or a quick snack.
Just steps away from the ship, you'll see a Decommissioned military outpost called Fort Seward. The Fort turned into a national landmark, and as you wander here, you'll get a sense of being transported to a very different time.
Haines is a terrific place for a nature walk, and if you like taking photos, there are tons of scenic spots very close to ship. You can take some beautiful shots with the ship in the background.
If you venture on a little further following the curve around to the harbor you’ll have even more awesome photo ops. This sign makes a wonderful background.
Just up the hill from the harbor is the Sheldon Museum and Cultural Center, a nice place to learn more about Haines. Across the street you’ll find one of many inviting shops. Haines’ shops and restaurants have a downhome unspoiled feel. If you are looking for truly distinctive souvenirs, then you’ll definitely want to check out some of these shops. Here’s look at just some of what you’ll find. Haines is unlike most of your other port stops - you won't find large chain jewelry shops and big retail here. These are locally owned shops with incredibly cordial locals, and some truly unique items. And speaking of unique, how about the Hammer Museum? Stop in if you have time. It’s surprisingly fascinating.
If you're looking for some exercise and an incredible way to see Haines first hand, stop by and talk to our friends at Sockey Cycle. You can bike to cannery cove, pedal through town, and explore the nearby beauty, and yeah, maybe burn off a few buffet calories. Another great option for scenic adventure is the Takshanuk Mountain Trail by 4x4 excursion. These vehicles are super fun, and a great way to see the natural beauty of this area. There are some awe-inspiring views on this trip you just won’t see on other excursions.

Alaska State Museums Services Chat 31, Gold Rush Artifacts, May 8, 2013
Webinar with Special Guest Curator Samantha Richerts from the Klondike Gold Rush National Park in Skagway. She discussed gold rush artifacts from the Rapuzzi collection that were available for donation to museums in Alaska. Because this was originally recorded in May 2013, these artifacts are almost certainly no longer available.

Listening is a more natural way of learning, when compared to reading. Written language only began at around 3200 BC, but spoken language has existed long ago.
Learning by listening is a great way to:
- increases imagination and understanding
- improves your listening skills
- improves your own spoken accent
- learn while on the move
- reduce eye strain
Now learn the vast amount of general knowledge available on Wikipedia through audio (audio article). You could even learn subconsciously by playing the audio while you are sleeping! If you are planning to listen a lot, you could try using a bone conduction headphone, or a standard speaker instead of an earphone.
