The Works:V&A's Design Society in Shenzhen & singer-songwriter Kiri T
This week we’re heading to Shenzhen to take a look at what’s been described as “the first outpost in Asia” of one of London’s great museums, the Victoria and Albert Museum. Also known as V&A the museum has been collaborating with the state-owned China Merchants Shekou since 2014 to set up Design Society, the first major museum in China devoted to design. Design Society says it wants to be a place that inspires action, stimulating the growing design scene in Southern China as well as encouraging awareness of how design can change society. The museum opened its doors to the public last month.
New York-based singer-songwriter Kiri T was born in Hong Kong and has worked with such local names as Denise Ho (HOCC), Joey Yung, Waa Wei, Endy Chow and Jan Lam. Like many children growing up in middle class Hong Kong families, singer-songwriter Kiri T learned ballet, violin and the piano when she was young. Although she was trained in classical disciplines, which she found a little stifling, she was more inspired by pop. She earned her first publishing deal at the age of fourteen, working with Denise Ho. After some time working with the local industry she decided to broaden her horizons again and went on to study electronic production and design at Berklee College of Music in Boston. She’s with us in the studio to give us a preview of her new LP, due to be released this week.

Talk2Mi-1 | Jie, Why China? Why Shenzhen?
My name is Mi and I work for a tech accelerator (NOS Accelerator) in Shenzhen, China. Accelerators usually have a fund investing in early stage start-ups, thus they sometimes categorised as venture capitalists, so do us.
My job is trying to find the most advanced technologies and help them to develop in PRC market. How? By helping them with resources, such as money, industrial partners, talents, and clients.
During this journey, I cannot believe how many foreigners are actually doing business in China, and I do believe a lot more of them are on their way. And this show is aim to give you a brief idea of how is it like to start up your tech journey here?
Would it be more fascinating than Silicon Valley? What are the biggest challenges? Will try to answer more questions along the show.
Jie started his journey in Shenzhen since the beginning of 2017, he came here because of the need of manufacturing for his new product: a smart speaker.
But what he had found out is, the speed here, in Shenzhen is unbelievably fast, and the price is only a 3rd of US. Thus he decide to stay, plus he’s actually a Chinese (grown up in France).
This is a conversation I asked him about what’s the most difficult barrier coming to China, and how did he concord the hard days.
If you would like to know more about his product, please click here:

This is my first time doing a show, more conversations coming soon.

Listening is a more natural way of learning, when compared to reading. Written language only began at around 3200 BC, but spoken language has existed long ago.
Learning by listening is a great way to:
- increases imagination and understanding
- improves your listening skills
- improves your own spoken accent
- learn while on the move
- reduce eye strain
Now learn the vast amount of general knowledge available on Wikipedia through audio (audio article). You could even learn subconsciously by playing the audio while you are sleeping! If you are planning to listen a lot, you could try using a bone conduction headphone, or a standard speaker instead of an earphone.

SUMMARY
=======
Shenzhen ([ʂə́n.ʈʂə̂n] (listen)) is a major city in Guangdong Province, China; it forms part of the Pearl River Delta megalopolis, bordering Hong Kong to the south, Huizhou to the northeast, and Dongguan to the northwest. It holds sub-provincial administrative status, with powers slightly less than a province.
Shenzhen, which roughly follows the administrative boundaries of Bao'an County, officially became a city in 1979, taking its name from the former county town, whose train station was the last stop on the Mainland Chinese section of the railway between Canton and Kowloon. In 1980, Shenzhen was established as China's first special economic zone. Shenzhen's registered population as of 2017 was estimated at 12,905,000. However, the Shenzhen Municipal Party Committee estimates that the population of Shenzhen is about 20 million, due to the large unregistered floating migrant population living in the city. Shenzhen was one of the fastest-growing cities in the world in the 1990s and the 2000s and has been ranked second on the list of ‘top 10 cities to visit in 2019 by Lonely Planet.Shenzhen's cityscape results from its vibrant economy - made possible by rapid foreign investment following the institution of the policy of reform and opening-up in 1979.
