In July 1989 I visited the 20in gauge Shipley Glen Tramway near Bradford in West Yorkshire. This is the Oldest working Cable Tramway in Great Britain. Opened in 1895 it is still open and is now manned by volunteers. (

On the Shipley Glen Tramway Santa Special - Funicular Railway
Shipley Glen Tramway is a historic funicular railway operated by Shipley Glen Tramway Preservation Co Ltd and its wonderful team of volunteers and located in Shipley Glen near the village of Saltaire, near Bradford in the county of West Yorkshire, England.
The tramway is close to the fascinating model village of Saltaire, which is home to Salts Mill and its amazing collection of David Hockney artworks. Saltaire is well worth a visit.

A visit to the delightful Shipley Glen Tramway on Saturday 3rd October 2015.
The Shipley Glen Tramway is a historic funicular tramway situated in the wooded Shipley Glen near the village of Saltaire in the English county of West Yorkshire.
In 2002, operation of the line was taken over by a charitable trust under a lease from Bradford City Council. The line was closed in 2009, and has been rebuilt to bring it up to modern safety standards. This involved fitting the two tramcars with new chassis, wheels and decks, relaying the track, and improving braking systems on both cars and haulage drum. The line reopened in 2011.

I've wanted to visit The Shipley Glen Tramway for a long time and finally got there on 2nd July 2017. I was not disappointed. It feels like you have stepped back in time.
The volunteers are very friendly and helpful. I was only there for a short time but really enjoyed it.
I certainly plan to spend a bit more time there when I next visit

A bus group trip took us to Britain's oldest working cable tramway, the Shipley Glen Tramway. Located in Saltaire, West Yorkshire, this is a unique and a little known gem.
