Japan Travel - Okinawa Naha Shuri Castle (首里城)
Naha Shuri Castle (首里城) is a UNESCO heritage site. Both the castle and the park around it are very beautiful and very different from a typical Japanese castle. Definitely a must see place if you are visiting Naha. And just one IMPORTNAT NOTE - if you are taking the monorail DO NOT trash your tickets. If you show the tickets from the monorail you will receive significant discount for the castle tickets!
Monorail to/from Shuri Castle, Okinawa, October 19, 2014
The only train option in Naha is the Okinawa City Monorail Line. There is also only one line so it is easy to figure out the system.
The monorail starts from Naha Airport and terminates at Shuri Castle. It takes around ½ hour to cover this distance.
When you ride the monorail you can feel from the way the track is curved that it was build in existing streets because the monorail is following the streets with sharp turns.
It is easy to get to the platforms even with luggage because as always in Japan there are plenty of lifts.

Japan Travel: Imperial History and Culture at the Shuri Castle, in Okinawa Main Island, Okinawa07
Shuri Castle, a UNESCO World Heritage site, in Okinawa served an important role in Okinawa’s history. Though presently a district of Naha, Shuri was the former capital of the Ryukyu Kingdom. Until Okinawa became a Japanese Prefecture in 1879, Shuri Castle was both the administrative center as well as residence for the Ryukyu kings for several centuries.
The castle was originally constructed in the late 1300s. Destroyed many times through war and fires, the current buildings are a result of the reconstruction efforts from 1992. To approach the castle, located on the top of hill, visitors need to pass through many gates, including the well known Shureimon Gate.
The castle’s main hall, the Seiden was the former venue for many governmental events. A landmark of Okinawa, the Seiden’s flamboyant decoration, architecture and vermillion color shows the difference in castle style between Okinawa and mainland Japan.
Visitors will find the Una Plaza in front of the Seiden. Here many ceremonies were held. The Una Plaza is enclosed by the Hokuden (North Hall), Nanden (South Hall) and the Hoshinmon (Hoshin Gate). The Hokuden and Nanden were administrative buildings which were also used as venues to welcome visitors from China and mainland Japan.
Visitors are welcomed to view the interior of these historic halls. The interiors of the Hokuden and Nanden are like modern museums with informative displays about Ryukyu Kingdom as well as the Okinawa’s history with the Japanese mainland and China. Visitors can also view local historic artifact as well as cultural replicas received during foreign trade.
The Seiden has been reconstructed in its original style. The richness and fine furnishing the Ryukyu kings were accustomed to are displayed in the Seiden. Visitors can even view a replica of the king's throne and crown are among the exhibits.

Shuri Castle Fire

My video on Shuri Castle before the fire:
Footage courtesy NHK world Japan
Waking up to this was terrible this morning! Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Okinawa people who have been so kind and loving to our family. We grieve with this important historical loss.
The main building of Shuri Castle, a symbol of Okinawa Prefecture and popular tourist attraction in the city of Naha, was destroyed in a fire early Thursday morning, authorities said. The cause of the fire remains unknown.
There were no reports of injuries, police and fire officials said, but about 30 nearby residents were temporarily evacuated.
The fire was put out around 11 a.m., the city of Naha’s fire department said.
In total, about 4,200 square meters of the facility have been destroyed, including the main, north and south buildings. All three were wooden structures, but no sprinklers were installed, the fire department said.
More than 10 fire engines were dispatched to the scene. Fire officials said it is highly likely that the fire started in the main building.
The castle long served as the heart of the Ryukyu Kingdom, which ruled the island prefecture from 1429 to 1879, but was destroyed in the Battle of Okinawa in the closing days of World War II. The structures were reconstructed in 1992, and the castle ruins were designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2000.
“The cause of the fire has not been determined yet but a security company alarm went off at around 2:30 in the morning,” said Ryo Kochi, a spokesman with the Okinawa Prefectural Police.
Television footage showed large orange flames engulfing the castle.

The Shuri Castle in Okinawa, Japan is believed to have been constructed at the end of the fourteenth century.
Originally the capital of the Ryukyu Kingdom, Shuri castle housed the kingdom's royalty and served as its administrative center.
Throughout its existence, it has been repeatedly ravaged by fire and warfare.
The facade's most recent reconstructions honor the castle's important past while reflecting Japan's historic culture.
This monumental structure was completely destroyed during World War Two; fortunately it was rebuilt as a university and ultimately opened to the public.
Visitors can explore the interior of the castle to learn about the Ryukyu Kingdom's captivating history.

Shisaa of Kishaba - Okinawa, Japan
Shisaa are considered protectors from evil. They can be found throughout Okinawa in various forms and various places. Although we now see shisaa in pairs traditionally they could have been found by themselves on the roof of a house. Shesaa were also placed in locations where a bit more protection might be needed.
This particular shisaa was once protecting against a fire spitting rock (read description in video). The style is very similar to the other shisaa which can be found in the Kyunna area (Stay tuned I will make a video about those shisaa in the future).
The shisaa is also in a nice little park which is lovely and has a lot of historical assets in the park although it is not a place for kids (if you're looking for an actual playground) although there is wide open space for those who want to enjoy just being outside.

Shuri Castle, Naha, Okinawa, October 19, 2014
By far the most interesting tourist site in Naha is the Shuri Castle. It is located on a hilltop from where you can overlook much of the city.
The castle and the surroundings are beautifully restored and it is difficult to imagine that it was completely destroyed in 1945.
It is easy to spent at least ½ day there. Note that it can be very crowded with tourists (especially school classes). We went early and it was not densely packed yet. We found that it was a good place to go the first day we were in Naha (and very jet-lagged.)
It is quite easy to get to the Shuri Castle by the monorail that terminates 10 minutes walk from the castle.
