Easy Off Road 4X4 Trails In Southern California
Are you new to off roading and looking for some easy 4x4 trails to get started on? This is the NotaRubicon’s list of favorite easy and beginner off-road trails. All of these 4x4 trails can be completed by any stock 4x4 vehicle and most are short enough that they can be completed in just a few hours.
Number 10 - Rainbow Basin
The very first trail that The Notarubion ever went on was Rainbow Basin . So easy, it can hardly be considered a trail, it’s a great dirt road for first-time off-road driver. Rainbow Basin is a colorful geologic formation in the Calico Peaks mountain range, about 8 miles north of Barstow just off of Ft. Irwin Road. The Rainbow basin is known for it’s beautifully colored rock formations.
Number 9 - The Red Canyon Jeep Trail
The Red Canyon Trail is a scenic trail that starts at Interstate 10 runs through the hills to Summit Road near Salton Sea. This trail is mostly flat easy road but there is one large, steep and intimidating hill to get up but any stock Jeep can make it easily.
Number 8 - The Bradshaw Trail
The Bradshaw Trail runs from Salton Sea to Blythe and is mostly flat, easy road with just a few sections of sand. There are several interesting things to see along the way including the abandoned Eagle Mountain railroad bridge.
Number 7 - Rattlesnake Canyon
Rattlesnake Canyon goes from highway 247 in Johnson Valley up into the mountains near Big Bear. There are a few sandy areas, a few narrow rocky spots, and usually mud in the winter months but any 4X4 Jeep or truck can complete this trail easily. Most times of the year you will find dozens of cows roaming free throughout the entire area
Number 6 - Burns Canyon Road (2N02)
Burns Canyon Road is an flat, easy dirt road that connects Pioneertown to Baldwin Lake near Big Bear. The Burns Canyon trail offers great views and also connects you with several other nearby trails such as Rattlesnake Canyon or harder trails such as Marble Canyon, Heartbreak Ridge and the Garden of Eden Jeep trail.
Number 5 - Lytle Creek Ridge
The Lytle Creek Ridge Trail is an easy trail composed mostly of fire roads and power line roads which cross the San Bernardino National Forest near the Cajon Pass. The trail runs from Lytle Creek to Lone Pine Canyon and offers beautiful views of the Inland Empire and Cajon Pass.
Number 4 - Old Dale Road
Old Dale Road in Joshua Tree runs through the Pinto Basin and into the Pinto Mountains, where it becomes Gold Crown Road. The route ends at Highway 62 not far from 29 Palms. There are dozens of abandoned mines and historic mining camps lining the route making it one of the NotaRubicon’s Favorites. There are a few rocky spots and shallow water crossing in winter months, but any stock Jeep or high-clearance 4x4 vehicle can travel this entire road easily.
Number 3 - Phillips Loop near Calico Ghost Town
UPDATE 2019 - Phillips Loop has become a bit washed out and may now be too difficult for some beginners! Drive at your own risk and don't go alone!
Phillips Loop is a beautiful scenic drive in the historic Calico mining district not far from Barstow. The loop takes you through the beautiful mountains and landscape of the Calico Mountains and takes you to Kramer’s Arch - an amazing natural structure large enough to drive your Jeep through.
Number 2 - Cajon Bypass (3N45)
Cajon Bypass (3N45) also known as Old Rt 66 is a short, rough, dirt road that was part of the Historic Route 66 over 100 years ago.
Starting at the summit of Cajon Pass behind where the Old Summit Inn once stood, it winds its way through the hills offering beautiful views of Cajon Pass before it connects to Highway 138
Number 1 - Cleghorn Trail (2N47)
The Notarubicon’s favorite trail! Cleghorn is a 14 mile long trail that is actually a flat dirt road but it has several optional offshoots that range from easy to difficult - perfect for practicing your off-road and 4X4 skills. Many of the offshoots on Cleghorn are steep, off-camber and full of deep ruts but if you stay on the road instead, it’s flat and easy making this the perfect trail for beginners to practice on.

Summer is fast approaching us. What better way to spend it then on some trails in California?
We already gave you our Top 5 trails in the Southeast, but now it's time to sound off on the Top 5 trails in the Golden State.
At number 5 on our list is Mendocino National Forest in Northwestern California.
Going on a trail in Mendocino is a completely serene nature experience. OHV Trails include the Grindstone Ranger District and Upper Lake Ranger District Trails. The absence of paved roads or highways crossing the forest makes Mendocino the perfect place if you’re looking for tranquility and solitude.
Next on our list is California’s Imperial Sand Dunes Recreational Areas in the Southeast!
These are the largest sand dunes open to OHVs in the United States. They sprawl from Southeastern California all the way into Mexico. Going on the 1,000 square miles of the Algodones Sand Dune system should definitely get your rig ready for Baja!
After you do that check out the Mojave National Preserve which is nestled between Los Angeles and Las Vegas.
Mojave is the third largest national park in the country clocking in at a massive 16 million acres. Be sure to put the Afton Canyon, Cedar Canyon, Fort Piute, Aiken Mines and Lava Tube on your wish list when planning out your trails.
Not too far from Mojave is our number 2 pick Johnson Valley.
This is home to one of the most grueling and legendary off-road competitions in the world: the King of the Hammers. The so called “hammers” are a large mass of hills that best even the most experienced off-roaders.
Extreme rock crawling isn’t all it has to offer though. You can also get your fill of open deserts, dry lake beds and sand dunes.
The trail at the top of our list needs no introduction for off-roaders; it’s the legendary Rubicon Trail. While it is only 22 miles long, Rubicon has gained a reputation for being the premiere testing ground for 4x4 enthusiasts. It is home to the Jeep Jamboree and of course gives its namesake to Rubicon variants of the Jeep Wrangler.
Famous obstacles like Post Pile, Walker Hill, Spider Lake, Chappie Rock, Buck Island Dam, Big Sluice and more are sure to give you a challenge.
Wherever you take your 4x4 this summer, be sure to post videos of your adventures to our facebook page here.
Until next time, I’m Ken with 4WheelOnline!

Gold Lake 4x4 Camp Trail
Don't forget to check out Gold Lake 4x4 Campground.
Gold Lake is in Southern Plumas National Forest. This trail/road is accessed close to the entrance of Gold Lake Campground. Go through Sierraville and it take about 2 hours from Sac to get there. About half of the drive is through beautiful high country. It's well worth the drive!
I started this video right after where you would turn right to enter the campground, just continue straight ahead. You will then see the signs that are posted showing how to get to the 4x4 campground. The campground has maybe 10-12 sites, and they are first come first serve. Some are right on the lake, others are across the trail/road.
For for the most part, 4x4 will not be required to make it to the campground. I only used 4 low because my truck is stick, and didn't want to play with the gas/clutch all that much. That being said, there are at least 2 places where 4x4 should be used, no question. There is the little climb at the beginning and then there is a little, and I mean little, obstacle to get over when leaving the 4x4 campground back to the regular campground. Here is that obstacle from another video I took when leaving the obstacle is just some tree root sticking out of the ground.
This is almost a perfect setting for anyone who is a beginner wheeler. The trail/road in is easy, and I have seen people out there in stock rigs. If you want a little more adventure, you can keep driving the trail/road away from camp and there are plenty of trails and fire roads to keep anyone entertained!
The only downside to this campground is there is ZERO cell service, doesn't matter the provider. CB/Ham radio highly recommended! It is remote, but on weekends you will see people out there. So you will not be totally isolated if in a bind.
Lastly, there is a gate on each end of Gold Lake Highway that closes for the winter months. Check the website for Gold Lake Campground to make sure the gates are open.
I hope you get the chance to visit Gold Lake. On a hot summer day its one of my ideal places to be!

Off-Roading in Mendocino National Forest: Hull Mountain - Easy Off-Road Trail
For the full trail guide please visit:
Hull Mountain rises above Lake Pillsbury in the southwest part of the Mendocino National Forest in Northern California. This is a beautiful area for camping, swimming, fishing, and 4WD adventures. The mountain stands at 6,873', and there is a rough dirt road all the way to the summit, where only a concrete foundation remains of the fire lookout tower that once stood here. The views from the top are world-class; on a clear day you can see Lassen Peak to the North, the Sierras to the East, and the nearby peaks of the Mendocino National Forest all around you (including Snow, Sanhedrin, and Goat just to name a few).

The Difference Between Overlanding vs Camping *Needed to get this off my chest*
Watch, Like, Subscribe!
What's up fellow car enthusiasts! If you haven't seen our last episode, check it out!
In this weeks episode I show you my one man one dog packing skills and explain the difference between Overlanding and Camping. (Also, I'm mainly referring to California only) People apparently are using this word interchangeably. So I head to one of the most popular Overlanding location in California, Alabama Hills, which is about 3 hours North of Los Angeles next to the town of Lone Pine on the 395 and in the foot hills of Mt Whitney. Here, I drove offroad for maybe 1 mile to my camping spot, but did about 5 miles of exploring for future episodes. This place is beautiful, very picturesque.
Thanks for watching!

ATV Riding in Walker River, NV on Memorial Day Weekend 2014
I took the GoPro on our annual trip to Walker River, NV on Memorial Day weekend. It is hard to squeeze everything in and keep it a short video (I tried my best and still had to leave a lot of footage out).
Swamp Lake Off-Road Trail - Fresno County, California
For the full trail guide please visit:
With the trailhead starting at just under 7400 feet, the Swamp Lake Trail has some of the best scenery the Sierra National Forest has to offer. From gravel, dirt, silt, boulders, granite faces, steep climbs and descents, this trail will throw everything at you within the first couple of miles. In the middle of the trail is Swamp Lake. This large, clear lake offers camping and fishing at its finest. Even during holiday weekends, the remote location ensures that the number of campers is minimal. If you are looking for some challenging off-roading and some quiet down time, Swamp Lake should be at the top of your To-Do-List.

SJ ForesterXT goes up Old Dale Road (Joshua Tree, CA) in search of a place to camp.
Skip to: the awesome place we called camp that night 11:02
12-9-17: With wild fires raging to the North and West, Grace and I decide to head East for our 2nd visit to Joshua Tree national park. We knew our chances of scoring on a camp site inside the park were close to slim, so we took to the vast BLM (Bureau of Land Management) lands in search of somewhere serene to camp, away from the city and under the stars.
***PLEASE NOTE*** Driving up Old Dale & Gold Crown Road was pushing my relatively stock 2015 Subaru Forester XT to the limits. I don't intentionally go looking for rough roads to drive up, I just do it for the adventure. My number 1 rule when driving up a challenging trail is to use common sense, always have the U-turn option available. Ride with another vehicle if possible. Bring all recovery gear, a radio, a proper full size spare, and plenty of food and water (to last multiple days). Use extreme caution if venturing out into the deserts during warm seasons. Be safe, and remember to have fun :P

Camping Trip 2019 | Shaver Lake
For our senior trip, my friends and I decided we would venture into the woods and spend the week camping at Shaver Lake. While our former classmates partied in both Tahoe and Hawaii, we got sun burnt and made memories around a campfire. Once again, still getting better at this whole video thing, and yes, it was filmed on an iPhone, so bear with me and enjoy!
