Siewdass Sadhu Hindu Temple in The Sea - Waterloo Trinidad West Indies by jonfromqueens
A well known site of worship for Hindus and a tourist attraction,
the Waterloo temple was built by Sewdass Sadhu,
an indentured labourer who came to Trinidad in 1907.
Sadhu built his first temple in 1947 on lands owned by the sugar
cane company, Tate and Lyle.
It was broken down and Sadhu was charged with trespassing
and fined £100 or 14 days in prison.
Declaring that if he couldn't build his temple on the land
then he would build it in the sea,
Sadhu began the work that would realise his dream.
With two buckets and an old lady's bicycle with a carrier
at the back, Sadhu began the laborious and painstaking
task of building the temple in the sea.
Five hundred feet into the quiet waters of the Gulf of Paria,
it today continues to stand on the very spot Sadhu first built it,
if not in the same condition since repair works were carried out
with help from the State and private business in 1994.
Over the years, Hindu devotees and tourists alike have made
the journey to the Temple-in-the-Sea,
once described as the first of its kind in the western world by
Dharmacharya Pundit Krishna Maharaj.
The Waterloo Cremation Site is also next to the grounds of this Temple.

This Hindu temple is regarded as a National Treasure to Trinidad and Tobago. An Indian labourer, Sewdass Sadhu, had constructed the first temple on the seashore in 1947. It was demolished because it was built on MacMillan Park, private property belonging to Tate and Lyle Limited, one of the leading sugar companies. Sadhu was sent to prison. He subsequently decided to build the Temple in the sea. It took him 25 years to build singlehandedly with only his bicycle to transport materials. This Temple is on a man-made island and is connected to the mainland by a pedestrian causeway. Images and murtis of Ganesh, Siddartha and other Hindu deities are displayed in an exquisite manner.
The temple, which was rebuilt in 1995 under a committee of which Randal Rampersad was Chairman, received assistance from the Unemployment Relief Programme (URP), as well as from overseas.

The famous Temple in the Sea located in the gulf of Paria, Trinidad, is a Hindu temple restored in 1995 but originally built by a poor sugarcane worker to provide a place of worship. At the time I was there, a wedding was going on.

Would you like to Support my channel ? Black pudding recipe - This Hindu Temple at Waterloo in Carapichaima, Trinidad is testament of one man’s love of Hinduism. The Temple was the 25-year attempt of Siewdass Sadhu to construct a worship centre at no-man’s land – the sea.
This Hindu temple was built through perseverance and strength. The Waterloo Temple, better known as Temple in the Sea, is an octagonal- shaped colourful structure. At the entrance of the temple, stands a statue of its designer Seedass Sadhu. Flags and statues adorn the temple’s perimeter. Before entering, you must remove your shoes because once inside, you are on holy ground. The beauty of reverence is reflected in the well-crafted murtis of Lord Hanuman, Lord Ganesh, Lord Shiva and Mother Durga and flowers adorned around them. The temple was first built in 1947 by indentured labourer Sadhu, whose dream was to build a place of worship. That dream was short lived as, five years later, it was destroyed by the government of the time since it was built on State-owned Caroni land. Not discouraged, Sadhu rebuilt the temple – this time in the sea to avoid the further incident. For the next 25 years, Sadhu dedicated himself to completing the temple. On his bicycle and in a leather bag, he carried stone by stone, assembling the base of the temple. In 1994, the government at the time helped finish the temple in commemoration of the 150th anniversary of the coming of Indians to the country. A pier was added to ensure the Waterloo Temple could easily be accessed during high tide.

Visit To Temple In The Sea, Waterloo, Couva, Trinidad | #OnDeRoadTripz
So my family and I decided to make a trip to Waterloo Couva to visit this site. When we arrived there a service was going on and were not able to go inside the temple. We did not stay too long show respect.
Temple in the sea is great to go and reflect, very peaceful, perfect for that mental get away meditation etc.

Hindu Temples in Trinidad | Vlog 29 | Taste of Trini
Hi everyone! A lot of you asked for me to do a video showcasing various Hindu temples in Trinidad. Although I did not get to do a thorough walk through inside the temples, I still got to show you how gorgeous they are. Hope you enjoy!
Here's the list of temples I visited:
Lakshmi Narayan Temple - Freeport
Triveni Mandir - Williamsville
Exchange Shiv Mandir (Exchange Sewalia) - Couva
Sri Dattatreya Yoga Centre - Carapichaima
Siewdass Sadhu Shiva Mandir (Temple in the Sea) - Waterloo
P.s- I did not plan to go to Triveni Mandir that day, which is why I was not dressed appropriately.
Like, Subscribe and Leave me comments- I want to hear from you!
Love,
