RUSSIA: ST PETERSBURG: NAVAL ACADEMY ACCEPTS 1ST EVER FEMALE
Russian/Nat
Russia's most prestigious naval academy has accepted its first ever female cadet.
Ludmila Yolshina's struggle to enter St. Petersburg's Frunze academy was probably one of the toughest battles she is likely to face during her naval career.
It was only after a letter to both Russia's President and Defence Minister that this top- ranked student and remarkable sportswoman was finally let into the door of the naval academy.
This year the Frunze academy has a very special student.
Ludmila Yolshina is the first female cadet to ever study at Russia's most prestigious naval academy.
But her journey to get into this elite military training center was not simple.
In 1996, Russia's Defence Ministry announced it would allow ten women to matriculate at Frunze.
However it received applications from more than 60 qualified women.
Exams were held - and ten candidates were finally chosen.
But then to their surprise, the Defence Ministry revoked its offer of ten spots for female cadets, saying women would not be allowed to study.
Ludmila refused to accept no for an answer.
She went straight to the top with a letter to President Boris Yeltsin and the Russian Minister of Defence.
Now she is the first female cadet and says getting in was the hardest part.
SOUNDBITE (Russian)
In an all male setting, it's actually a bit easier, because if you ask anyone for help, it's hard for them to refuse. But you know, in general, the guys are good to me and I enjoy studying with them.
SUPER CAPTION: Ludmila Yolshina, first female naval cadet, Frunze Naval Academy
Since enrolling, Ludmila has proved herself a fine student - just as good, if not better, than her male counterparts.
In fact, with military enrolment shrinking across the nation and the prestige of the Soviet army now a thing of the past, Russia's top brass is turning increasingly to alternative recruiting to attract the best and brightest career soldiers.
The Frunze Academy may indeed be forced to recruit more young women like Ludmila as the number of male candidates dwindles.
SOUNDBITE: (Russian)
What is happening is that there is a deficit of capable and healthy young men who are entering the academy and that is why we are now recruiting women.
SUPER CAPTION: Admiral Boris Popov, Director of Frunze Naval Academy
Ludmila certainly appears to fit the bill.
Strong, healthy and smart, she could well represent the future of the Russian army - less might and more professionalism.
For Ludmila herself, the navy is a family tradition.
Her older brother is also a cadet and her father a retired captain.
Her mother was a teacher at the Frunze Academy.
But although Ludmila is optimistic about her future, the upper echelons of the Russian military are not accustomed to female colleagues.
Ludmila intends to break that barrier and go as far up the ladder as possible.
SOUNDBITE: (Russian)
For example there are women in the United States navy. And it is already an accepted thing. Here, we do not yet have the necessary conditions for women. All the same I plan to serve but probably on shore.
SUPER CAPTION: Ludmila Yolshina, first female naval cadet, Frunze Naval Academy
The Academy was so unprepared for her enrolment that they did not even have a women's uniform.
This military coat was sewed on special order, as was the rest of her uniform from the skirt to tie.
And Ludmila lives at home instead of the academy barracks where her male counterparts reside.
The hour-long commute from her apartment to the academy makes for a very long day.
But Ludmila is determined to break the mould and become the first graduate of Frunze.

Painting St Paul's in Watercolour - quick demo
Painting St Paul's Cathedral London in Watercolour. This was sketched on site standing at the balcony from the Tate Gallery. It was a fairly cold and cloudy morning. I used Windsor and Newton water colours on A5 size 300 gsm water colour paper from Cass Art. This is a demo how I paint using line and wash technique. I let the watercolour run free and try and not to control it too much. Watercolour paintings will always look different once it is dry so try and not to overwork the painting too much, be loose and fluid just like the watercolour itself and you will be impressed with your results. Remember practice, practice, practice!!. Good Luck.

More about hydrofoils -
A hydrofoil is a foil which operates in water. They are similar in appearance and purpose to airfoils.
Hydrofoils can be artificial, such as the rudder or keel on a boat, the diving planes on a submarine, a surfboard fin, or occur naturally, as with fish fins, the flippers of aquatic mammals, the wings of swimming seabirds, or other creatures like the sand dollar.
The term hydrofoil is commonly used for the wing-like structure mounted on struts below the hull of a variety of boats (see illustration), which lifts the boat out of the water during forward motion, in order to reduce hull drag; as such, the term hydrofoil is often used to refer to boats using hydrofoil technology. Most of this article is about this type of hydrofoil.
As a hydrofoil-equipped watercraft increases in speed, the hydrofoil elements below the hull(s) develop enough lift to raise the hull up and out of the water. This results in a great reduction in hull drag, and a further corresponding increase in speed.
A wider adoption of the technical innovations of hydrofoils is prevented by the increased complexity of building and maintaining them. Hydrofoils are generally prohibitively more expensive than conventional watercraft. However, the design is simple enough that there are many human-powered hydrofoil designs. Amateur experimentation and development of the concept is popular.
A boat equipped with hydrofoils is also called a hydroplane (boat). (summary from wikipedia.org)

US, Russian Navy ships avoid collision after US destroyer 'aggressively approached': Fifth Fleet
American and Russian Navy ships narrowly avoided collision after the U.S. destroyer was aggressively approached by a Russian spy ship in the Northern Arabian Sea, according to the U.S. Navy's Fifth Fleet.
In video released by Fifth Fleet on Friday, the Russian intelligence collection ship, the Ivan Khurs, can be seen approaching the U.S. Navy destroyer USS Farragut on Thursday, coming within 60 yards of the American ship's stern, a U.S. official told ABC News.
MORE: A look at the US military's close calls with Russia in the air and at sea
Due to their speed and rate of closure, they would have gotten too close to [the] Farragut, even possibly colliding if they had been allowed to continue, the official said of the Ivan Khurs' actions.

Waterways Episode 266 - Florida Keys Marine Zones
Just as areas of land may be set aside for specific uses, so too can parts of the ocean. Marine zones can help protect sensitive natural resources from overuse, separate conflicting uses, and preserve the diversity of life and the integrity of habitat. Zones are an important tool for managing marine resources and have been used around the world. The sanctuary's zones are designed to preserve sensitive parts of the ecosystem while still allowing activities that are compatible with resource protection. Directed by Erik Hutchins. Presented by Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary, Everglades National Park and the United States Environmental Protection Agency.
Whale Found Swimming in Arctic With Russian Harness
Did a beluga whale give away Russia's secrets? The whale was found swimming in Arctic Norway by a bunch of fisherman. The animal caught their eyes because it seemed to be tied up in something. A closer inspection showed a harness was tightly clipped around its body. The Norwegian Directorate of Fisheries says Equipment St. Petersburg was written on the harness and it featured a mount for an action camera. InsideEdition.com's Mara Montalbano has more.
