-- About this video --
Today the weather is a bit rainy in Aoraki Mt Cook so we decide to spend the first part of the day at the Sir Edmund Hillary Centre in Mount Cook. The Edmund Hillary Alpine Centre is a small museum celebrating the achievements of Edmund Hillary, a New Zealand national icon, as well as other mountaineering achievements and lifestyle. The Hillary Centre also holds a few relics from the pioneering days of the Aoraki Mount Cook area.
When night falls we join Big Sky Stargazing Tours in the Hermitage Hotel for a stargazing tour in Mt Cook. First, we get an orientation of the night sky in the Hermitage Hotel planetarium before going onto a bus to the Big Sky stargazing secret stargazing spot complete with high powered telescopes. Stargazing in Mount Cook is particularly spectacular as the Aoraki Mt Cook National Park is in an International Dark Sky Reserve called the Aoraki Mackenzie Dark Sky Reserve. It has the darkest skies with the least light pollution for some awesome stargazing in New Zealand. The Big Sky Tour is worth considering for a stargazing tour in New Zealand.
So what do you think of the Sir Edmund Hillary Alpine Centre and the stargazing tour at the Hermitage Hotel? Would you add it to your Mt Cook travel itinerary? LUK in the comments!

A day trip from Wanaka to the Hermitage Hotel, - enjoying a lovely meal whilst there,- meeting the Chef Mr. Blum from St. Moritz CH - Ursula then ascending Mt. Cook! -
then we met a mountaineer from Somerset GB, who was in the process of walking the lengths of the southern alps. finally we payed a visit to a glacier lake in the Tasman Valley, all during one wonderful sunny day in autumn!

Lillian was kind enough to show us around the relatively new Sir Edmund Hillary Alpine Centre (2008) on a glorious sunny break after some fresh snow. Worth a visit epecially when the mountain weather gets more dramatic than you may like for the many outdoor activities that you can do here in Aoraki.

About Mount Cook Village from Pelennor Fields
This is a quintessential kiwi ride with some of the best cycling New Zealand has to offer. It takes you along the location of Pelennor Fields from Lord of the Rings and through the UNESCO heritage protected Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park to Mount Cook, the highest mountain in New Zealand. The ride begins with a section where you follow a beautiful hydro channel full of glacier blue water from Lake Pukaki and Lake Ohau. This is a nice flat section with beautiful views. In the first part of this section you ride along a segment of the 310 km long Alps 2 Ocean Cycle Trail and past the location of Pelennor Fields from Lord of the Rings. As you leave the hydro channel, you ride on the main road for a few kilometers before you enter the 'Mount Cook Road'. Located in a Unesco world heritage area, the Mount Cook Road offers one of the most stunning scenery in New Zealand. On your right, Lake Pukaki, a 15-kilometer long turquoise-colored glacier lake. The road follows the lake with small climbs and descents. In the background, you have the mountains of the Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park. After 46 kilometers you leave the lake and ride a beautiful 'open road' which has a beautiful view of Mount Cook. Further up the road, the view of Mount Cook is replaced by a view of the stunning Mueller Glacier. The ride ends in front of Sir Edmund Hillary Alpine Centre at the Hermitage Hotel.

Adding music to the ride:
Most cyclists would agree that the ride to Col du Tourmalet is awesome. But when it comes to music opinions are very mixed. This is why we do not add music to our rides. We simply do not want to spoil your ride with music you do not like. But it is quite simple to add it yourself. Open an extra browser tab. Find a site that offers music (Spotify, YouTube, etc…) and pick the music you like and enjoy the ride...

-- About this video --
In today’s episode, we’re heading to Mt Cook Airport for one of the most unique things to do in New Zealand, land on a glacier in a ski plane in Mt Cook!
We join Inflight Experiences for their Mt Cook ski plane flight which includes about a 30-minute scenic flight over the Aoraki Mt Cook National Park and then landing on the Tasman Glacier. There’s nowhere else in New Zealand (and not that many places in the world) that you can experience landing on a glacier in a ski plane.
This scenic flight in New Zealand is in a small 8-seater ski plane flying to the upper snow fields of the Tasman Glacier in Mt Cook. We then get to enjoy spending about 20 minutes on the Tasman Glacier in the snow surrounded by epic alpine scenery before jumping back on this New Zealand ski plane flight back to Mt Cook Airport.
So what do you think of this ski plane New Zealand flight? Would you add the Mt Cook skiplane to your Mt Cook travel itinerary? LUK in the comments!
