Czesław Niemen --1966 -- Sen o Warszawie & Old photographs of Warsaw
CZESŁAW NIEMEN (ur. 16 lutego 1939 w Starych Wasiliszkach, zm. 17 stycznia 2004 w Warszawie)
-- Sen o Warszawie. Muzyka Czesław Niemen, słowa Marek Gaszyński.
---------------
Legendary actress and singer Marlene Dietrich was so astonished by Niemen's performance while visiting Warsaw in 1964 that she asked him for permission to sing his song Czy mnie jeszcze pamietasz (Do You Still Remember Me). It was later re-titled as Mutter, hast du mir vergeben.
*
Czesław Niemen belongs to the legends of polish music scene. He was a singer, instrumentalist, composer, poet, painter. He has been famous for over 30 years.
He was born on February 16, 1939 in Stare Wasiliszki, Nowogródzkie, Poland [now Staryya Vasilishki, Belarus]. His real name was Czesław Juliusz Wydrzycki but he decided to use his stage name - Niemen. He came to Poland in early 50' with all his family. They moved to Gdańsk. It is a beautiful city near the seaside. He and his family were very poor and it was not easy for them to send him to school. After all, he finished his school and studies there. Czesław Niemen was singing from early years. His unusual voice was very specific and unforgettable. First he was singing songs for children. Later he was singing in a group called Blue - Black. He left this band in 1967 after The Opole Festival when he decided for solo career. Later he sang in few more bands but usually he worked as a soloist. After the festival where he sang his biggest hit Dziwny jest ten Świat he became an idol for teenagers. This man who was not handsome at all, wearing strange, colorful clothes became an idol of the masses. He was known all over the Poland. His voice was so charismatic that it was impossible to mistake him for another singer.
For 17 years, from 1964 till 1980, he had been claimed to be the most popular vocalist in Poland. He had creadted his own style and image. He liked bright - coloured shirts and flares. One time he looked like a mountain man, the other time he looked like a hippie He had alwoys long, dark hair. He was very visible person and artist. The communnists claimed he was a devil but he didn't care. He was giving a concerts in such countries like: Poland, RFN, NRD, Italy, France, United States. At the beginning the radios and Television were not allowed to emit his songs as the they were claimed to be not suitable.
After 1990 he walked away from the scene. He was working in his own recording studio. He was making his own music and he didn't care for fame. The world of pop music was not comfortable for him. He was a big artist but his songs were very avant - garde. The radio didn't want to emit songs which were destined just for a small number of people. He became too brilliant for viewers and listeners. He choose to be a real artist and locked in his house he was making the masterpieces.
He was also painting. The world of sounds was interlarded with colours. His favourite way of creating was computer graphics. His works were donated and sold on an auction. The money he earned were donated for children in Lithuania. He didn't want to be called a painter. However he was painting from earlu years he was not a professional. He was painting his own visions and poems which he wrote and than he was singing them, too. His paintings and compute graphics can be concidered as the reflection of his soul.
During the last years of his life he had almost vanished. He didn't walk out from his house. He was singing, painting, coposing in home. He was a vegetarian. He didn't smoke cigarettes and he didn't drink alkohole.
He died in 2004 after a long illness. He was departed with sorrow and grief. Czesław Niemen was a real artist and individualist.

A diplomatic bag, also known as a diplomatic pouch, is a container with certain legal protections used for carrying official correspondence or other items between a diplomatic mission and its home government or other diplomatic, consular, or otherwise official entities. The physical concept of a diplomatic bag is flexible and therefore can take many forms (e.g., a cardboard box, briefcase, duffel bag, large suitcase, crate or even a shipping container). Additionally, a diplomatic bag usually has some form of lock and/or tamper-evident seal attached to it in order to deter interference by unauthorized third parties. The most important point is that as long as it is externally marked to show its status, the bag has diplomatic immunity from search or seizure, as codified in article 27 of the 1961 Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations. It may only contain articles intended for official use. It is often escorted by a diplomatic courier, who is similarly immune from arrest and detention.
In discussions of cryptography, the diplomatic bag is conventionally used as an example of the ultimate secure channel used to exchange keys, codebooks, and other necessarily secret materials.
In contemporary practice, diplomatic bags are indeed used for exactly this purpose. An illustration is the strenuous protest made by German diplomats in Poland in the late 1920s when a cypher machine being shipped to the German Embassy in Warsaw – a commercial version of the famous Enigma machine – was mistakenly not marked as protected baggage and was opened, under protest, by Polish Customs. It was released to them, supposedly without many apologies (and with still more protest), but had perhaps been subjected to inspection by Polish cryptography personnel.

In this video, I traveled on Air Belgium A340 operating for British Airways flight from Dubai to London in Business Class (Club World). Find out how this interesting mega hybrid experience fare. Is the Air Belgium product better than British Airways one? I also gave some hints and tips on this flight. Let's fly together by watching the video!
Owing to recent problems with the Rolls Royce engines of the British Airways 787 Dreamliner aeroplane, we took this British Airways flight on board the Air Belgium A340.
It was an interesting hybrid flying experience, with the crew and aeroplane being from Air Belgium but the food, pillows, accessories and decoration being supplied by British Airways. So you see, we weren’t kidding, we really did fly with ABBA!
Before take-off, see inside the British Airways Dubai lounge and all of the tasty food they have to offer, as well as the exclusive first class, Concorde bar section.
During the flight, we examine the sleeping arrangements provided by British Airways as well as the quality of the on-boarding catering, including the provision of main meal, dessert and snacks, and the on-board entertainment system.
We also speak with the, as always, extremely diverse range of air crew hailing from everywhere from Belgium to China to Mauritius and we find out what makes them excited to provide a first class service to passengers on board. We also meet the friendly Belgian pilot, and briefly discuss the impact that the day’s strong head-winds had on our flight.
Relax and enjoy the flight and be sure to leave a comment down below on what you thought of it all!

Castleford - signpost. West Yorkshire.
Various shots, Len Hutton, cricketer, showing Lady Docker how to use a cricket bat. MS. Lady Docker kissing Len Hutton.
Various shots of Sir Bernard Docker (former Chairman of B.S.A.) and Lady Docker playing marbles and fooling around. Lady Docker holds a cricket bat - first she pretends to take a shot then plays it as if it was a guitar. CU. Marble games. Various shots of marbles contest and of types watching. Lots of the women wear fabulous spectacles.
Lady Docker looks super glamorous as usual. She kneels on a zebra skin during the games! She is presented with this at the end of the games then dances.
This is probably some kind of charity event.

A gun for hire or the private war of Rafał Gan-Ganowicz
A documentary about the life of Rafał Gan-Ganowicz, an anti-communist activist, mercenary and radio presenter. I have no rights to this film, but only made the subtitles. The translations are as literal as possible but sometimes context may be missing or some phrases may be not understood, hence I supply a small glossary:
Wawer is a Warsaw suburb
the Uprising - the Warsaw Uprising, in which the people of Warsaw rose up against the Germans with a false belief that the Soviets would take this opportunity to secure the bridges on the Vistula and advance without harming the city too much. It did not go according to plan... This series of events has an excellent Wikipedia article:
AK – The official organised Polish resistance to foreign occupation, it's members fought the Nazis and then the Soviets, in post-war Poland they were persecuted by the state, with penalties ranging from loosing one's job to getting shot in the head and buried in a ditch.
UB – Office of Public Security, the communist organ of oppression that persecuted the former and generally enforced the new political order and ideology
'reactionary midget' – an epithet that the new government used to describe the Home Army and all who opposed socialist rule. It was used extensively during the propaganda campaign that ensued after the war to discredit oppositionists. Gan Ganowicz is probably referring to this poster, widely distributed in his time.
general Anders – Polish general taken prisoner by the Soviets after the September Campaign in 1939, who became the leader of the Polish Army formed in the USSR that effectively walked out of the Soviet union threw Persia to Palestine and joined Allied forces in the Middle East. An unbelievable story that I did not just do justice to. He never returned to communist Poland and is buried in Monte Cassino where the Polish Second Corps took heavy losses to break the Gustav Line.
general Jaruzelski – Polish communist general, that facilitated the transition from communism to post-communism with a coup and martial law, events highly controversial today in Poland. (Some say it was necessary to prevent the Warsaw Pact from intervening, others point to the effects of the dictatorship: an orchestrated transition of power from communists to whoever the communists deemed harmless.) It is not controversial however that the general is responsible for the deaths of many protesters, beaten to death or shot by police.
'Berbant' – a Paris restaurant in which mercenaries were known to hang around
The western embassies that Gan-Ganowicz fired at could only have been the American and Australian one as the countries that recognised North Yemen at the time were:
Egipt, USSR, Iraq, USA, Australia and Jordan (in order of recognition). The fast recognition of the Egipt-backed Republic of Yemen (Egipt being Soviet backed) by John Kennedy is indeed puzzling. Source:
painted children is a polish phrase describing exactly the person that Gan-Ganowicz is: war time troublemakers and colourful, interesting people who look for mischief but in good will. Not translatable.
Radio Free Europe - The partially CIA-funded organisation that broadcast a non-communist radio to countries behind the Iron Curtain. Listening to it was forbidden and it was often blocked, but it remained a trusted and influential medium for people living under the red yoke.
general Kiszczak – Prime minister and minister of interior, one of the organisers of the Round Table talks. While Jaruzelski remains controversial, only hard headed communists consider Kiszczak to be redeemable as he had the army shoot at protesting miners. A year after his death, in 2016, documents proving that Lech Wałęsa, the poster-boy for the Solidarity movement, collaborated with the Office of Public Security were found in his wardrobe.
general Pożoga – a prominent member of the Central Committee of the Polish United Workers' Party, high up in the ministry of the interior, involved in the transition from communism to whatever followed. As an intelligence officer he worked with the military and ministeries of interior and exterior.
Round Table – The round table talks between all power brokers in late communist Poland that ended in a compromise to slowly change the regime. While some hail the talks as a bloodless resolution, others notice that the communist elites remained unpunished and retained significant influence in many spheres.

Woman hides thousands of children in coffins – then she’s arrested and her dark secret emerges
Woman hides thousands of children in coffins – then she’s arrested and her dark secret emerges
Irena Sendler was born in Warsaw, Poland on February 15, 1910.
Her father taught her many things, but one lesson in particular stayed with her for her entire life: always help the needy.
When Irena was only seven years old, her father died of typhus. But the years she spent with him would come to have an enormous influence on her.
When she grew up, Irena followed in the footsteps of her father, who was a doctor, and became a nurse.
And she later became employed as a social worker in the Warsaw Social Welfare Department, where she helped distribute food and clothing to families in need.
At that time, Jews living in many parts of Europe were being persecuted. But even though Irena was a devout Catholic, she refused to give in to prejudice. She helped several Jewish families, just like she helped everyone else
During the Second World War, the Nazis created the Warsaw Ghetto to intern Jewish families.
It was the largest Jewish ghetto established by the Nazis, and at its peak, around 400,000 Jews were imprisoned within its walls.
Life in the ghetto was characterized by overcrowding, hunger, instability, and disease.
Irena, who was concerned with the appalling living conditions, decided to get involved.
She joined Zegota, an underground resistance organization in German-occupied Poland that worked to save Jews. Irena realized that she needed to do something—even if it that meant risking her own life.
Together with her colleagues, Irena started secretly helping Jewish children escape from the ghetto.
Irena visited many Jewish homes and families, but many mothers refused to surrender their children to a stranger, even if that stranger was well-intentioned and had a plan to free their children. But staying meant certain death, either by being murdered inside its walls or by deportation to concentration camps.
Since Nazi surveillance of the ghetto was extensive, Irena was forced to find creative ways to hide the children and smuggle them out.
One method was to pretend that the children were seriously ill and bring them to hospitals outside the ghetto. But as the surveillance increased, Irena had to hide the children in suitcases, garbage bags, and even coffins.
One rescue involved a baby named Eluzina. Irena hid her in a wooden box that was supposed to contain bricks.
The girl, just five months old, was brought to safety. And the only thing she had with her was a small silver spoon that her mother had hidden in her clothes.
More than 2,500 children were saved in this way. Irena kept a record of all the children she brought to safety, and the list was hidden in cans in a neighbor's garden.
Irena's plan went perfectly until one day, everything came crashing down on her. The Nazis discovered what she was doing and arrested her.
Irena was sent to prison, where she was tortured by the Gestapo and had both of her arms broken. But despite the pain and torture, she refused to give up any information about the children or their families.
Eventually, the Nazis sentenced her to death. But fate had other plans for Irena. Some of Irena's aides managed to bribe a soldier in the prison so she could escape.
From that day—until her death many years later—Irena lived under a false identity. But she never stopped helping others.
My hatred of the German occupiers was stronger than my fear. In addition, my father had taught me that if you see a man drowning, you must try to save him even if you cannot swim. At that time, it was Poland that was drowning, Irena said in an interview with the Swedish
When the war ended, Irena handed over the records of all the children she rescued to a rescue organization that helped reunite Jewish families.
Later in life, Irena got married and had three children. She lived a happy life, knowing that she had done the right thing.
The reason why I rescued children was because of the way I grew up. I was brought up to believe that a person must be rescued when drowning, regardless of religion and nationality, says Irena.
After working so hard to help others throughout her life, Irena died at the age of 98.
In many ways, she was a forgotten hero and few people knew of her amazing work.
In 1964, Irena Sendler received the Israeli honorary title of Polish Righteous among the Nations, and in 1997, she was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize.
The prize, however, went to environmental activist and former vice president of the United States, Al Gore.
Irena didn't hold a grudge and instead chose to pay tribute to others.
I did not do it alone. We were about 20 to 25 people, she explained.
