Alsea Falls Campground Oregon 5-2-17
We camped over night at Alsea Falls campground, it was a really nice, and recently renovated camp, had over a dozen sites with fresh gravel and wood fence around each camp spot, as well as clean pit toilets and potable water. It was the middle of the week and the first day of the open season, so everything was fresh and there were not many people camping yet. I did see many sites reserved for the coming weekend. The main entrance sign reads no reservations, but they have started doing them this year. It was $12 a night for a single camp, $20 for group camps. Alsea falls is a short hike away, and can also be accessed from a day use area with picknic tables and parking.

Earth-sun-moon during solar eclipse August 21, 2017
This movie is constructed of panoramic images collected from a 3D-printed camera imaging platform carried by a hydrogen weather balloon over 100,000 ft (30,500 m) above Corvallis Oregon during that event August 21, 2017. Each image is composed of hundreds of stitched images before a stereographic (‘little planet’) projection is applied so that the 360 degree image can be projected onto a flat screen.
Back Story
A team of Portland State University engineering students, alumni, and friends of the university launched 5 high-altitude hydrogen balloons during the Great American Eclipse of August 21, 2017. The 3-D printed payloads carried by three of the balloons were equipped with cameras collecting approximately 180,000 photos from which to construct high-resolution 360-degree panoramic images of the earth, sun, and moon during the solar eclipse over Oregon. A fourth balloon payload carried multiple high-resolution video cameras and a fifth was launched as part of the NASA Space Grant-supported Eclipse Ballooning Project, which involved 55 college and K-12 teams throughout the U.S. to image the path of the eclipse across the country.
The balloons were launched in stages to capture the event from the Oregon State University campus in Corvallis, several miles south of the line of totality. The balloons typically reach elevations over 100,000 ft rising at a rate of approximately 1000 ft/min before bursting, the GPS-tracked payloads returning to the ground by parachute. Four of the five balloon payloads were recovered, the lost payload having risen to over 118,000 ft while drifting 10 miles over the Pacific Ocean when the balloon burst. We lost contact with the payload once it reached 45 ft below sea level. Three of the four recovered payloads were retrieved from tall trees in and around the Siuslaw National Forest.
This video of the earth-sun-moon systems during the eclipse over Oregon is constructed of a number of panoramic images taken from the third balloon’s payload. Each panoramic image is a collection of hundreds of still images collected in bursts during the eclipse by 20.1 Megapixel Canon G9X Mark II digital cameras. In the approximately 360,000 square mile scene, fog covers the ocean, wildfire smoke covers eastern Oregon, and mountains in California and Washington are easily identified. Panoramic images and other ballooning information can be accessed here:
This project was supported by the NASA Oregon Space Grant Consortium as part of the NASA Space Grant Eclipse Ballooning Project. The student-alumni team from Portland State University was supported in part by the Maseeh College of Engineering and Computer Science. See related links below:

Grant's Getaways: Drift Creek Falls
If you spend enough time in the Oregon outdoors, you realize that when it comes to winter weather, luck is a good partner to have by your side. So it was on a recent streamside stroll into a watershed where the rain is often measured in feet -- not inches but where huge surprises waited at the end of the trail.
Drift Creek will carry you away --- perhaps where imagination travels---on a wonderful trail alongside a classic pool and drop Oregon stream. Flanked by ferns, alder trees and vine maple, Drift Creek Trail winds through the rain-drenched Siuslaw National Forest.

A drive in the snow, Florence to Mapleton, Oregon
We do not get snow very often here on the Oregon coast, today a large cold front moved in and dumped snow on most of Oregon.
Not much at my house but went for a drive to see the snow east from Florence to Mapleton. Fun drive.

Blodgett Fields
We had our first evening games at Blodgett Paintball and Fun Factory. This was the first game, which lasted about an hour. Since it was so long, my camera shut off due to filling up the SD card. Added, my camera got hit, so some of the audio sync is a little muffed toward the end. Still good footage guys! SEMO Airsoft! SPQR!
