Coronavirus: Can China contain outbreak that has infected 2,700 people?
In China the number of coronavirus infections is increasing, along with it the number of deaths. Authorities continue to take extraordinary actions - restricting travel, extending holidays, and aiming to build new hospitals in days. (Subscribe:
Around fifteen hundred people have come back to the UK from virus-hit Wuhan since 10 January.
It is those people, Health Secretary Matt Hacock said, who should isolate themselves as it is not certain whether the coronavirus can be spread by people who are not displaying symptoms.
His announcement came as the death toll climbed above 80.
And one Briton trapped in the locked-down city has told us he wants to get back to the UK but has not heard from the Foreign Office.

Alaska Vacation Travel Video Guide
Travel video about destination Alaska.
Alaska is a country situated on the edge of the Arctic and dream destination for wildlife and nature lovers who answer to the call of the wild. A land of bears, glaciers, pioneers and prospectors on the northern tip of the American continent. In Vancouver, Canada’s pearl of the Pacific Ocean, begins an extraordinary journey along the Alexander Archipelago in the Gulf Of Alaska, a charming capital with European flair. In English Bay a giant metal crab guards the planetarium and by aquabus our journey travels across False Creek to Science World with its marvellous glass globe that contains a museum of modern art. Ketchikan is a small town located five hundred and twenty six nautical miles north of Vancouver and was founded by the Tlingit Indians. In the 1880’s the town based its economy on salmon and timber but today relies upon tourism. Since 1900, Juneau has been the capital city of Alaska, the forty ninth state of the U.S.A. In 1880, Joe Juneau, Richard Harris and their Tlingit Indian leader, Chief Kowee, discovered gold in Gold Creek and the gold rush began. Glacier Bay was completely covered by ice and glaciers around four thousand years ago during the Little Ice Age. The ice melted and the ever-changing glaciers are today situated within the arms of the bay which stretches almost a hundred kilometres to the north. Barrow is the northernmost point of inhabited North America and five hundred kilometres north of the Arctic Circle. The living conditions in the arctic wastelands are extremely harsh and most of the year it is bone-chillingly cold. Even today the promise of untamed nature and boundless freedom attracts us to America’s final wilderness. Alaska is full of wild extremes and stark contrasts, a fascinating land of pure adventure!

4K Gastown Steam Clock, Vancouver, Canada
Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada April 05 2016
Raymond Saunders' first steam clock was built in 1977 to solve the issue of a steam vent in a popular sidewalk for the renovated Gastown district of Vancouver, 49°17′04″N 123°06′32″W.[2] Although the clock is now owned by the City of Vancouver, funding for the project, over $C58,000, was provided by contributions from local merchants, property owners, and private donors. Incorporating a steam engine and electric motors, the clock displays the time on four faces and announces the quarter hours with a whistle chime that plays the Westminster Quarters. The clock is featured on the cover for the 2011 Nickelback album Here and Now.
How it works Engine.
The steam engine is a Stuart #4 single expansion double acting 1 piston engine purchased at the Stuart Turner Limited plant at Henley-on-Thames, England. (Engines of this size are typically employed by hobbyists for large model boat propulsion.) It is supplied with low pressure steam — engine inlet pressure is 17 psi (120 kPa) — from a centralized steam heating system that serves a portion of downtown Vancouver. The engine, rotating at only a few hundred revolutions per minute, drives a reduction gear train. The gear train drives an ascending chain lift to lift ball weights to a top track from which they load onto a drive chain providing the driving force to the clock while the ball weights descend.
Descending ball chain and pendulum
Chain lift. The engine-driven gear train drives the lower sprocket of a vertical link-chain (similar to a bicycle chain), with a lift of about four feet. Chain-mounted pairs of lifting fingers form forks which accept and lift smooth steel balls (about two inches in diameter). The balls are lifted at a rate of one every 4.5 minutes.
Top transfer. A hammer-like mechanism operates to drive the topmost ball from the lifting fork at the top of the lift. The ball is then received by a transfer chute, whence it is routed to a gate at the top of the drive chain. The ball is restrained until a descending clock drive chain fork is properly positioned to receive it.
Clock drive chain. A similar continuous chain receives the lifted balls from the transfer chute at the top of the mechanism. At any time, five or six balls are being carried by this chain. It is the unbalanced weight upon this chain that drives a conventional pendulum clock mechanism through the upper sprocket.
Ball return. At the bottom of the clock drive chain the balls come to rest upon an inclined blade leading to a chute where they roll to the initial lifting point. Two or three of the balls are in this position, with the foremost awaiting the passage of the lifting fingers.
Clock movement. The Gastown clock keeps time by a small tower clock movement that was custom-built in Croydon, England by Gillette & Johnston Co, from one of their 1875 designs. This type of tower clock movement was used in many small church tower clocks after 1875.
Whistles
Electric motors. The clock uses three electric motors. First, a small gear motor drives the tune playing machine. It rotates a drum with pins that play the Westminster chimes on micro switches which operate the steam whistle solenoid valves. Second, a small fan motor blows out hot air from the roof vent on top of the clock. Third, a small fan motor pulls warm air down to the base to provide air circulation.
Chiming mechanism. Five steam whistles are mounted atop the clock case. The large central whistle, off the CPR steam tug Naramata, counts off the full hours. The four auxiliary whistles chime the Westminster Quarters four times an hour.

NORTH VANCOUVER ISLAND TRIP | Visiting Port Hardy + Port McNeill + Telegraph Cove, BC
In today’s video, we continue our road trip across Vancouver Island in partnership with Trover, this time visiting three towns in the northern part of the island where we have lots of cool nature sightings and also come across some rather unusual attractions!
First up, we visited Port Hardy where we casually encountered a bald eagle - locals were very calm about this occurrence but the three of us were standing by the water’s edge ooh-ing and ahh-ing at the display.
Then, in Port McNeill, we came across the biggest burl in the world; we didn’t even know what a burl was up until our visit, so we’ll tell you guys all about it soon enough.
And finally, we hit up the picturesque seaside village of Telegraph Cove, where we learned all about killer whales and came face to face with two deer who seemed blissfully unaware of our presence.
It was a great day and we can’t wait to share it with you in this video!
That bald eagle encounter pretty much made our visit to Port Hardy! We then walked along the waterfront, where we spotted a curious seal peeping its head out of the water, plus we saw some impressive totems. It was a short visit, but we really enjoyed the town.
From there, we continued our drive towards Port McNeill, but we pulled down a logging road just shy of the town to visit a rather unique attraction. This right here is a burl; a burl is a knotty growth on a tree that can occur on the trunk, at the base of the tree, or even underground in the form of a rounded growth. It’s the result of stress on the tree due to injury, a fungus, or an insect infestation. This one here is apparently the world’s largest burl!
We then drove into Port McNeill to have a little wander and check out the marina.
We continued our drive towards Telegraph Cove, which may very well be the most picturesque town we visited during our whole Vancouver Island road trip. Telegraph Cove started out as a fishing and cannery village, but today it’s an eco-tourism destination where you can embark on a number of adventures including kayaking trips, whale watching excursions, and even grizzly bear tours.
After our little mid afternoon treat, we walked over to the Whale Interpretive Centre, which was founded in 2002 and seeks to raise public awareness about marine mammals and the threats they face. The Whale Interpretive Centre is home to one of the best collections of marine mammal skeletons in British Columbia. Of course we added this place to Trover because it’s a must-visit if you make it out to Telegraph Cove.
We didn’t hike more than 5 minutes before we had a surprise: two deer munching on shrubs and bushes! They were just a few meters away from us and their little snack must’ve been tasty because they didn’t even look at us.
And that’s it for today’s adventures on Vancouver Island.

NORTH VANCOUVER ISLAND TRIP | Visiting Port Hardy + Port McNeill + Telegraph Cove, BC:
Come join us for an epic road trip to Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada where we partner with Trover to cover the island from the south all the way up to the north. Unlike most Vancouver Island road trips and travel series which focus on the triangle of Vancouver, Nanaimo and Tofino, we branch off and visit lesser-known places such as Gold River, Port Alice and Malcolm Island just to name a few.
Our trip to Vancouver Island starts off with a flight from Toronto to Vancouver, followed by the shortest flight of our lives from Vancouver to Victoria. From Victoria, we head to our base of Mount Washington in the central part of the island, where highlights include spotting black bears, hiking in Mount Washington and visiting vineyards in Comox.
Heading to northern Vancouver Island, we base ourselves in Port Alice and visit the nearby towns of Port McNeill, Port Hardy and Telegraph Cove. For separate day trips, we take the ferry to Malcolm Island where we visit the former Finnish Community of Sointula and take another ferry to Alert Bay where we have the opportunity to appreciate First Nations totem poles, artwork and museums.
If you are thinking of doing a Canada road trip, Vancouver Island should be at the top of your list. For more information and tips on all the places we visited on Vancouver Island, you can check out this Trover list:
