Innsbruck: The Heart of the Alps and Home for Pro Snowboarder Elias Elhardt | Insight
Elias Elhardt rides the backcountry with the acuity of the best of his predecessors. From pillow lines and spines to natural booters and mogul patches, he’s one of the most versatile snowboarders today. If you’ve watched his video parts, you know. His style builds upon itself. Powder-heavy cornice drops segue into handplants on rotting trees, back sevens, and lofty methods. Plain and simple, Elias kills it. That’s why he gets paid to snowboard.
But when snowboarding is your job, keeping a positive outlook on it becomes more difficult. It’s all too easy to view it as the everyday grind. Constant traveling and performing is exhausting in any context. That’s why Elias makes a point of balancing work and play: “I definitely need that balance of performing and enjoying snowboarding without any spectators, just doing it for myself and appreciating the joy of movement.”
That’s why Elias resides in Innsbruck, Austria, in the heart of the Alps. To him, it provides normalcy within a hectic life. He can come home and be around friends whose lives don't revolve around snowboarding. He can relax and recharge for his next trip to the mountains, be it around the world or 20 minutes from his front door.

Nowhere else in the world do city and mountains blend so seamlessly together as in Innsbruck, Austria - the Capital of the Alps.
Filmmaker Ashley Wiggins takes us on a tour of the freeride playground above the city, from the raw high alpine peaks of Kühtai (2020m) to the playful forests and jumps of Nordkette.
He's joined by talented snowboarders Victor Heim and Gabriel Indrist plus skier Ludwig Wiedermayr, who together turn these mighty mountains into a vast natural playground full of powder-cloaked steeps, cliff drops and backcountry booters.

DISCLAIMER:
Freeriding in uncontrolled off-piste terrain can be extremely dangerous. Victor, Gabriel and Ludwig are very experienced and they analyse the snow, terrain, and weather conditions before venturing out. Ludwig is also part of the mountain rescue team in East Tirol.
It is advised to only go off-piste with a local guide, or in avalanche controlled zones where local teams blast the mountain to release controlled avalanches and clear out dangerous layers. I wrote about this in a previous article.
Read the daily avalanche bulletin each morning to learn about current conditions, and make sure to ALWAYS carry the minimum safety kit of transciever, shovel and probe.
Stay safe, look out for each other, and have fun.

Innsbruck in Tirol a Local's Winter Tale - holiday in Austria
Michi, the owner of ski manufacturer SPURart, guides us through his home town. Innsbruck is the capitol of Tirol also known as the Heart of the Alps. According to Michi, there is definitely a reason for this. The Hungerburg cable car to the Nordkette starts from the middle of the town centre, taking you to the top of the Hafelekar in just 20 minutes. The Oympia Skiworld region is not just the city of Innsbruck, but includes all the surrounding villages with 9 skiresorts to choose from. Michi takes us to the Kühtai area, only half an hour from Innsbruck. The whole region is accessable by bus. The public transport in the Olympia Skiworld is free with a multiday skipass, which you need to explore everthing Innsbruck has to offer. The Stubaier glacier, for example, is Austria’s biggest glacier ski resort. And Axamer Lizum and the Patscherkofel are where the Olympic Winter Games of 1964 and 1976 were held.

The morning was a gorgeous bluebird as you will see here:
But this was my last run of the day as I went down to the base. My battery died but you'll notice the conditions were wet with poor visibility and the snow was far from ideal. Hope you enjoy the video nonetheless! Woohoo, Austrian Alps!

Above the clouds had some amazing views as you can see here:
But by the end of the day, the sun went away. Conditions were quite icy and to make matters worse, my toe strap ladder broke off as I was tightening mid-run. Makes for a shorter video. Hope you like!

Second ski lesson at Seegrube in Innsbruck, Austria
Mathias our instructor took a video at our mad ski skills ;)
Innsbruck, Austria
Innsbruck is an outstanding tourist destination, it has something of a central European capital about it with its royal palace and gardens and other regal looking, almost imperial style architecture. Of course it is the capital of Tyrol! It is surrounded by the Karwendel mountains with the Hafelekarspitze reaching 2,334 metres to the north and the Patscherkofel 2,246 m and Serles 2,718 m to the south which are close to the Brenner Pass some 30 km from Innsbruck.
Innsbruck is an internationally renowned winter sports centre, and hosted the 1964 and 1976 Winter Olympics as well as the 1984 and 1988 Winter Paralympics. Innsbruck also hosted the first Winter Youth Olympics in 2012.
For my stay, I left my motorhome at the excellent Natterersee campsite which is linked to Innsbruck by a free bus which runs roughly once an hour.
The outstanding tourist sites are of course the old town which is a mixture of German and Italian to my eye. I also went up the Nordkette mountain which is linked to the centre of town via a finicular railway. One can also see the Alpine Zoo which is overlooks the town to the north and has an excellent thematic collection of Alpine wildlife. The famous Swarovski factory is nearby at Wattens, one can take a bus which runs every two hours or so.
See the film for more details!
