The Smeaton's Tower - Plymouth
Plymouth, in the Southwest of England, in the UK, offers loads to visit and explore.
The Smeaton's Tower is, certainly, one of the many places you must visit when coming to the city.
It's Winter in the UK, and the lighthouse (Smeaton's tower) is under refurbishment, But in this video I'll take you inside the tower in a bright Summer day, and climb right to the top from where you will have a panoramic 300 degree view of the city and beyond.
This is not a video intended to give historical factors of the tower, but it's my own exploration of the place.

Exploring Smeaton's Tower, Plymouth
A centerpiece on Plymouth's Hoe, Smeaton's Tower has become one of the South West's most well-known landmarks.
The lighthouse was originally built on the Eddystone reef in 1759 at a cost of £40,000, but was taken down in the early 1880s when it was discovered that the sea was undermining the rock it was standing on. Approximately two thirds of the structure was moved stone by stone to its current resting place on the Hoe.
Now standing at 72 foot high, Smeaton's Tower offers fantastic views of Plymouth Sound and the city from its lantern room which, along with the rest of the building, has been painstakingly restored to its original glory.

Plymouth, Devon, 4K UK Travel Video
Plymouth is one of the most dynamic and fascinating places to visit in Devon.
If you’re a fan of all things nautical, then be sure to make a trip to Plymouth Hoe. Not only is it the backdrop for Sir Francis Drake’s legendary game of bowls, but it’s also one of the most beautiful natural harbours in the world. You can get incredible views of the Plymouth from Smeaton’s Tower. And don’t forget to pay a visit to the Barbican, a bustling array of specialist shops, restaurants, cafes and world-class attractions in Devon, all set against the backdrop of Plymouth's picturesque harbour. In addition, there’s Sutton Harbour, where you can visit the world-famous Plymouth Gin Distillery or, if you’re with the kids, drop in on the National Marine Aquarium.

This was filmed in the early 1990's. It was another of my walk through tours where I only had a couple of hours on board. I was a Lighthouse Keeper but had never been posted to this Lighthouse before. I have also included a walk through of Smeatons Tower on the Hoe in Plymouth.

13 England Plymouth
Plymouth is on the south coast of Devon, England at the mouths of the rivers Plym to the east and Tamar to the west where they join Plymouth Sound. In 1620, the Pilgrim Fathers departed Plymouth for the New World, The United States of America. While in Plymouth, we saw the Royal Citadel, the red and white Smeaton's Lighthouse Tower, Plymouth Sound and Breakwater, the National Armada memorial, the Naval War Memorial, The Plymouth Eye, Sir Francis Drake Statue, The Barbican and Plymouth Hoe and Hoe Foreshore area. We also saw the Mayflower Steps where the Pilgrim Fathers left England aboard the Mayflower before crossing the Atlantic Ocean to settle in North America on September 6, 1620. The steps today consist of a commemorative portico and a small platform over the water with a brushed steel rail and the steps. We took a Plymouth Harbor Cruise up the River Tamar to Saltash.
The music we used for this video is Ilvaggio a Remis by Rossi.
Crownhill Fort, Plymouth
Crownhill Fort in Plymouth is one of many Palmerston Follies constructed in the 1860's to defend key locations against French invasion at great expense but never needed. Since 1987 it has been owned and managed by the Landmark Trust and they have restored large parts of the fort to it's original Victorian style and appearance, making it a fascinating place to visit on the open days held on the last Friday of most months except during the winter. Check out their website for more details here:
Eddystone Lighthouses - A Brief History and Inside Tour

Visiting Plymouth in Devon - Maritime City in the UK
Here we visit Plymouth, a city in South Devon which has a maritime history and is home to Devonport, the largest Naval base in Western Europe.
We visit the famous Barbican Waterfront which surrounds Sutton Harbour, which on this day was hosting the annual Pirate Festival so there was plenty of sea shanty singing, pirates and some tall ships!
We check out the impressive city with its fabulous architecture, take a stroll up to Plymouth Hoe and the iconic Smeaton’s Tower lighthouse and catch the Torpoint Ferry which crosses the River Tamar between Devonport in Plymouth and Torpoint in Cornwall.

Eddystone Lighthouse
The Eddystone Lighthouse is on the dangerous Eddystone Rocks, 9 miles south of Rame Head, England, United Kingdom. While Rame Head is in Cornwall, the rocks are in Devon and composed of Precambrian gneiss. The current structure is the fourth to be built on the site. The first and second were destroyed by storm and fire. The third, also known as Smeaton's Tower, is the best known because of its influence on lighthouse design and its importance in the development of concrete for building. Its upper portions have been re-erected in Plymouth as a monument.[5] The first lighthouse, completed in 1699, was the world's first open ocean lighthouse although the Cordouan lighthouse preceded it as the first offshore lighthouse.
Explained: The Eddystone Lighthouse(s)
The story of one particular lighthouse, that isn't one particular lighthouse. With a story involving dramatic irony, swallowing molten metal and a song topping No. 9 on the singles chart., yeah, this is going to need explaining.
I am not at all confident in my videos being this long and am worried they're becoming boring-ish as they get any longer, so please leave your feedback on both the overall quality and the length to help me improve down in the comments. Lastly, thank you for watching and see you in another two months I guess?
