Amazing FREE Beach Snorkeling Ojo De Agua Puerto Morelos Mayan Riviera
The Mayan Riviera is a beautiful part of Mexico that we love to spend our vacation time when possible. The last time we stayed at the Dreams Resort. The snorkeling infront of the resort was not great but a short walk down the beach to Puerto Morelos puts you right at an excellent, roped off and free swimming and snorkeling area. This is known as Ojo De Agua and can be found out front of the tower that you'll see in the video. This area is known for an underwater fresh water Cenote that pours out into the ocean in about 10 feet of water. This Cenote attracts all kind of fish to the area from beautiful Angelfish to Barracudas. There is no shortage of reef and fish to appreciate all from FREE!!! So go check it out if you are ever in the area and you will not be disappointed.

Puerto Morelos Beach Mexico February 2019
Puerto Morelos is a famous resort on the Riviera Maya coast. It gained its fame thanks to the coral reef, which is only 500 meters from the coast. The famous researcher of the sea depths, Jean-Jacques Cousteau, considered this reef to be one of the most beautiful on the planet.

Snorkeling Puerto Morelos from Shore - 2017
Snorkeling from shore in Puerto Morelos is best 1.5 blocks north of the town pier. See end of video for instructions on how to find this spot. Best color is in close-ups, best action is when the camera is sitting still. Camera is an Olympus Tough TD-820. This camera corrects for underwater color loss. I used a small tripod where I had fastened a small but heavy rock, using rubber bands. This stabilizes the camera when swimming, and also holds the camera down wherever I set.. I have also tried using fishing line attached to the camera making it easy to retrieve the camera. Thanks for the comments.

Puerto Morelos is a funky cool mexican seaside village that was the inspiration for Jimmy Buttets famous song Margaritaville. The town is also becoming famous for its world class snorkeling which is often recognized as the best snorkeling in the entire Riviera Maya. The snorkeling is great because the shallow reef is located only a short boat ride from shore, and because it offers great visibility and slow currents which make it ideal to see all types of marine life including colorful tropical fish and corals.
For this experience you will hop onboard a panga boat and head out to the Great Mayan Reef which is the second longest coral reef in the world. Once you arrive you will put on your fins and mask and head off with a guide to explore the better areas where you are likely to see the most marine life.
After snorkeling the reef you will head back to shore where you can stop off for lunch at one of the many seaside restaurants in Puerto Morelos and enjoy drinking a margarita in paradise.
This tour is perfect for all ages as well as for families. It is simple, beautiful and the combination of a small tropical village with fantastic snorkeling makes it a unique day.
Best snorkeling in PUERTO MORELOS. HERMOSISIMO CANCUN. TULUM MEXICO.

Snorkeling Puerto Morelos from Shore - 2015
This is the third year I have used my Olympus Tough TD-820 camera. I put the camera on a small flexible tripod with a rock attached in the center (held in by elastics) which stabilizes the camera underwater while snorkeling. This also allows me to set the camera down on the bottom sand or on rocks. I do not put the camera on coral or sponges (I am a biologist and would not damage the environment). I also do not feed the fish to bring them close, since that changes the species distribution over time.
When I float back to the surface, the fish are not bothered by the camera and will swim close to it. After a few minutes I dive back down and retrieve the camera and look for the next spot where fish are gathering. Sometimes I dive down and follow the fish, so the weighted tripod really helps to stabilize the camera while in motion.
If snorkeling in Puerto Morelos, this is the only good spot to see a lot of fish and coral without paying $25 for a trip to the reef. The reef is very shallow (less than 8 feet), you must wear a life jacket and you get 45 minutes each at two different spots. I prefer to snorkel for several hours at a time and do not enjoy wearing a life jacket, so I prefer to snorkel from shore. I have snorkeled up and down the beach as far as you can go and still be in Puerto Morelos, and have found that there is only one good spot (shown in the video). It is an easy, less than 5 minute swim out to the rocks from shore.
See my other videos where I identify the fish and also snorkel the reef. This movie was edited from a 1 hour version in Hi-Def. I hope you enjoy the video. I highly recommend the snorkeling spot shown here and a tour of the reef to fully appreciate the snorkeling that can be found here.

Scuba Diving Puerto Morelos, Riviera Maya, Mexico
This is a compilation video of shallow reefs - 15 to 40 feet near Puerto Morelos, Quintana Roo Mexico.
While there I dove Rodman and Mini Wall dive sites.
Rodman is a 17 feet - Small reef in the National Park north of the town of Puerto Morelos.
Mini Wall is a 25 to 30 feet - Network of large coral heads and a wall of coral from sandy bottom nearly to the surface is often populated by king crabs. Grassy area where turtles are sometimes spotted.
Snorkelers Paradise | Puerto Morelos + Akumal | GoPro
This was some of the best places to snorkel off the main land of Mexico. Puerto Morelos was a lush coral reef with a lot of fish, some of them being super friendly! Akumal was the second location where we took a dive. We saw green Sea Turtles but I accidentally deleted the video for that, sad day when that happened. You can tell the difference between Puerto Morelos and Akumal by the color of the water. Puerto Morelos tends to be more of a greenish tint since there is a lot of grass on the bottom and Akumal is a clear, light blue. Enjoy the video and make sure to subscribe :)
Our FAVORITE beach town in Mexico that you've NEVER heard of
Located in the heart of the Mayan Riviera, Puerto Morelos QUICKLY became our favorite beach town in Mexico!
►Subscribe to our channel!
Puerto Morelos is in the Mexican state of Quintana Roo, located halfway between Cancun and Playa Del Carmen. On the shores of the Caribbean Sea, the waters and beach of Puerto Morelos are some of the prettiest we’ve seen!
This quaint little beach town is kicking off our 2019 Mexico travel vlog and we can’t wait to explore this town and surrounding area even more! The town itself is pretty small, one of the smallest beach towns we’ve been to throughout our Mexico travels. But there is a huge coral reef right off shore, quite a few great restaurants to try, and some of the best snorkeling and diving in the Yucatan Peninsula. Needless to say, I think we’ll stay plenty busy here.
If that isn’t enough, with the town’s close proximity to Cancun and Playa Del Carmen and other amazing destinations in the Riviera Maya, there’s no shortage of things to do within a reasonable driving distance.
One thing that has plagued Mexico’s Caribbean beaches over the course of the past year is the sargazo (seaweed). Typically, this is only something that these Mexico beach towns only have to deal with about 1 month a year, but lately it’s been different. In our opinion, the sargazo in Puerto Morelos hasn’t been too bad since we’ve been here. It can pile up on the beaches but the water has been pretty clear with its natural, gorgeous, hues of blue and green.
In today’s video, we ate breakfast at a local restaurant and later had some Veracruz-influenced seafood at another. We also took a short trip to Cancun to purchase some things that we’ve been needing from Costco, which was a super painless drive straight up the highway.

Things to do on a Day Trip to Puerto Morelos
If you are looking to take a day trip from Playa del Carmen or Cancun then Puerto Morelos is a great option. We consider it THE BEST place for reef snorkeling at the Mayan Riviera. Click here for more information.
►Subscribe to our Youtube channel here:
The reef in Puerto Morelos is a National Marine Park, meaning the reef is a protected area. It is thanks to this protected status that makes the Puerto Morelos reef one of the best for snorkeling in the Riviera Maya. Our tour guides did a three-day course and had to pass an exam to be able to take our guests to visit the reef.
Puerto Morelos has a lot of cenotes! In fact, they have a whole road full of them called Ruta De Los Cenotes (road of the cenotes). The only catch is that without a car it can be tricky to get to. This means you will either need to rent a car, get a taxi, or book a tour.
With so many cenotes in Puerto Morelos, it can be hard to choose which one to visit. Many have horse riding, zip lines, rappelling, and kayaking so you will need to choose wisely!
Our favorite cenote is called Zapote and it’s the one we take our guests to on our Puerto Morelos tour. So if you don’t want to hassle of renting a car or booking a taxi then why not let us take you?
On this tour, we will pick you up from your hotel in the morning and take you to Puerto Morelos where you will be met by a private boat to take you out to the reef for a snorkeling adventure. Click here for more information.
We do offer this excursion as a small group tour every Tuesday and Friday for a special price!
It's our aim to provide helpful content related to traveling, the Mexican Caribbean, Cancun, Playa del Carmen, Tulum sightseeing, places to go and not go and in general being a reliable source of knowledge about this area.
