Cartagena Dreaming - Hotel Charleston Santa Teresa
- A heady mix of Latin flair and chilled Caribbean vibes, the colonial city of Cartagena is perched on Colombia’s northern coastline and runs on its own special variety of clockwork, which might not quite equate to GMT briskness, but is no less enchanting for that. In fact, time becomes somehow irrelevant, unless used as a marker to kick-off another indulgence. The Santa Teresa from Hoteles Charleston is a major landmark in the city’s walled Old Town. This ex-convent, its ochre exterior unmissable has a reputation as ‘the’ place to stay as secure as its historical foundations, which date back to the arrival of Spanish conquistadores in the mid-16th Century.

Cruising to COLOMBIA! Coffee in Cartagena & Street Food in Santa Marta
Today we cruised to our 85th country! Our first port in Colombia was the town of Santa Marta which beautifully set in between the sea and the mountains. The streets are colorful and lively, and we tried some yummy street foods. The next day we cruised to Cartagena where we got to try Colombia’s most award winning coffee! We ended the day hanging out with celebrity chef Jorge Rausch in the ship’s kitchen to learn how he makes ceviche! We have 2 more stops on our 2 week leg of MSC’s around the world cruise :)

Originally from Nashville, Tennessee, we got married June 2013 and quickly caught the travel bug! We started “travel hacking” & finally decided we wanted to travel for one year. After 2 years of saving $ and over 2 million miles and points, we sold our cars and apartment and left home January 10, 2016. We started this YouTube channel to share our experiences with friends and family, then decided we really liked vlogging and traveling! So we extended our 1 year trip to now FOUR years :) Now we have a goal of traveling to 100 countries before 2020! We are incredibly thankful to do something we love every day. :)

Mud Bath Experience
If you have not experienced a Mud Bath YOU HAVE TO!! We currently live in the Napa Valley area and Mud Baths are all the rage out here! Seriously there are Mud Bath Spa's on every corner so we FINALLY had to try them out ourselves! We went to Calistoga Golden Haven Hot Springs Spa and Resort to enjoy their Couples Mud Bath (mainly because they were running a half off internet special) which we highly reccommend looking into first! Anyways, it was a whirlwind of an experience and we are SO HAPPY we discovered Mud Baths because we are going to start doing them at least once a month! Conrad Cartagena, Colombia - King Suite w/ private pool
Me and my wife enjoyed an incredible stay at the Conrad Cartagena. We had a relaxing weekend getaway here for our second wedding anniversary and were really happy with our choice. The staff at this hotel goes out of their way to ensure a good stay. All staff members we came in contact with were very welcoming and even a few addressed us by name which was impressive as it was our first stay here. I will point out that this hotel is not in the city of Cartagena it is 15-20 minutes outside of Cartagena so if your looking to see the city there are more convenient options but if you just want to relax this is the place to go. The private pool in our room was the icing on the cake.

Mud Bath in the volcano...They say the volcano is a couple hundred meters deep but the mud is so thick that you just float on top, even if you stand up with your toes pointed straight down you don`t sink in past your chest. QUITE FUN!!!!!

Huffington Post:
Is Cartagena de Indias, in Colombia the greatest city in the world? I venture back to one of my favourite places on the planet, Caribbean Coast of Colombia, in one of my favourite countries in the world, to visit one of the greatest cities ever, Cartagena.
From Boca Grande, to Getsemani, Cartagena is a diverse, special city that you can see in video but cannot feel until you actually arrive in the city. The colourful buildings in the center of Getsemani area of Cartagena, and walking along the fortress wall. The marina of my favourite neighbourhood in Cartagena, Manga, the list goes on.
Taganga, Colombia |
Cartagena is a city where you need to spend at least a few days to to get your epiphany moment of why this city is so incredible. Don't let the Colombian Caribbean heat put you off. Embrace it, visit Isla Baru, walk around Getsemani, the Centro, go up La Popa that looks over Cartagena. Take a boat tour, visit the Cartagena markets. Sit at a coffee shop and see people wander the Cartagena streets selling mangos, coconuts. Whatever you're into, do it at a slow pace to ensure Cartagena has enough time to win you over because eventually it will.
Taganga, Colombia Sunset |
I really liked Cartagena my first visit, even more so on my 2nd, and now I have been back 4 or 5 times and it is a full on love affair.
This country of Colombia just keeps getting better. Come visit and travel Colombia and fall in love again.

Welcome to Colombia
Tourism in Colombia has been developing lately, therefore, there are more and more hotels that include a wide variety of unique experiences. Traveling through Colombia I have been able to enjoy very good hotels, but the following 10 hotels for me are the ones that offer the best experiences to customers:
# 10: Finca Natural Mururito ( It is located in the department of Meta, in the Colombian llanos. Getting there is not that simple, but it is a great place to stay and enjoy various activities such as bird watching, trekking and horse riding.
#9 Placita Vieja ( Located in the best area of the historic center of Santa Marta, it is a themed hotel that highlights the beautiful landscapes of the Caribbean region. Around there are several restaurants, bars, parks and squares.
#8 Finca Vista de Nieces ( A 100-year-old coffee farm in the Sierra Nevada of Santa Marta that can be rented. It has a private waterfall and is ideal for a few days of relaxation and peace.
#7 Deep Blue ( A luxury hotel on Providencia. Deep Blue is surrounded by rainforest, with a magnificent view towards Cayo Cangrejo and the beautiful waters of the Caribbean Sea. A great place to stay in Colombia.
#6 Hacienda Termales La Quinta ( It is located in the Coffee Axis, in the department of Caldas. There you can go trekking, horse riding and enjoy the hot springs. Although it is difficult to reach, it is a place worth visiting.
#5 Hacienda Venecia ( It is one of the largest coffee farms in the coffee region of Colombia. It has different types of accommodation, such as the main house, a hostel, the coffee lodge and an overlanders site.
#4 Hotel Patio del Mundo ( Located in El Poblado neighborhood in Medellín. Each of the rooms is decorated according to a place in the world and the social spaces allude to Colombia and its cultural tradition.
#3 Hotel Las Islas ( Located in Barú, an island near Cartagena. This hotel is an eco-hotel where you can enjoy a private pool and beach, spa, delicious food, and a peaceful space away from the city.
#2 Four Seasons Casa Medina ( A boutique hotel located in the Zona G of Bogotá that has elegant rooms in a colonial-style building.
#1 Casa San Agustín ( The best hotel in Colombia is located in Cartagena. A luxurious and relaxed atmosphere in a hotel that seeks to keep intact the cultural heritage of Colombia and Cartagena.
Other good hotels in Colombia are Casa Rosalía ( in Valledupar, Tinamú Birding ( in Caldas and Posada Turística Dantayaco ( in Mocoa.

For the first week of my time in Colombia I wanted to dive into the history and see the main sights in the colonial town of Cartagena, therefore I put together a list of the best things to do in Cartagena and went out to explore. Beyond the popular sights and touristic spots I found some great restaurants, went to a few picturesque Carribbean islands and discovered a beach town which is still fairly unknow by like minded people who are backpacking in Colombia.
From the historic city center to recommendable food places this video is meant to also help you find your way around and plan your stay in the area of Cartagena. All my tips can also be found on my website, this includes sights as well as restaurants and hotels in Cartagena.
In the next episode we are going to explore the various sights in and around the city of Medellin and take a look at the violent past of the country as well as at the transformation of it.
Things to do in Cartagena (Cololmbia) as shown in this episode:
Centro Historico / Old Town & Free Tour
Old City Wall / Walled City
Getsemani neighborhood
Volcano El Totumo
Castillo San Felipe de Barajas / Fortress of San Felipe
Paraiso Secreto on Isla Grande, Islas de Rosario
Rincon del Mar
Isla Mucura, Isla Tintipan, Islote at Islas de San Bernardo
— About Exploring Colombia —
Colombia, a country which many only know because of it’s violent past, has been on my list since I went to South America for my first long-term trip in 2012. 6 Years later and with 5 weeks to spend it was finally time to properly explore my country number 9 on the continent.
For the first part of the trip I’ll be traveling with my mate David to the historical city of Cartagena, some picturesque Carribean islands and to the city of Medellin where we get to learn about the violent past and the transformation of the country. After a few days in the capital Bogota I’ll be joined by my good friend Stefan to learn salsa and take on some outdoor adventures in Cali before heading up to Santa Marta where we checkout the most beautiful beaches, float down rivers and hike through the mountains.
