Horizontal skyscraper built in China
A unique skyscraper is being built in the Chinese city of Chongqing. The building consists of 8 vertical towers and one horizontal tower.
The construction of the unusual building began in late 2012. Its outlines make it look like the sail of an ancient Chinese ship.
The construction of the complex is coming to an end. Four towers connected with a huge tunnel built above them make the central element of the complex. The tunnel is in fact another horizontal skyscraper that lies on top of the four vertical towers thus connecting all of them with each other.
The horizontal design was called the Crystal. It is 300 meters long and it sits at the height of 250 meters. To complete the construction of the complex, the Crystal was assembled as 7 separate segments. Four segments were assembled on the rooftops of the towers, while three others were built on the ground before they were lifted to the top.
The Crystal tower will have both offices and apartments. There will also be two swimming pools, a viewpoint, a winter garden, a shopping gallery and a walking gallery. The opening of the entire complex of buildings is scheduled for late 2019.

Shenzhen: City of the Future. The high-tech life of China’s Silicon Valley
More films about China:
- Technology and innovation hub, Shenzhen is known as China’s “silicon valley” and “the city of the future”.
- Once a fishing village, in just 50 years it grew into a megacity packed with skyscrapers.
- It hosts international technology exhibitions and forums and attracts creators and investors from around the world, contributing to its population boom
- Inventors and engineers working here, create helpful robots, hybrid cars and smart car parks
China has a saying; to see the past, visit Beijing, to see the present, go to Shanghai but for the future, it’s Shenzhen. Shenzhen has transformed itself from a tiny fishing village to a megacity in just 50 years, its population tripling since the 1990s. The city is a magnet for tech-savvy and inventive dreamers from all across China and the world, because of them Shenzhen has become the “silicon valley” of China, a true technology and innovation hub.
The sprawling metropolis is famed for its skyscrapers, hybrid cars, solar energy and for being home to a great many hi-tech companies. UBTECH is one of them; its focus is on making robots an indispensable part of everyday life. Its key product is the android – a human-like robot that can help out in the workplace and around the home as well as becoming both teacher and playmate for kids.
Shenzhen municipal government encourages citizens to switch to eco-friendly, hybrid cars that use both fuel and solar energy. The vehicles are made by a local manufacturer, BYD. Public transport here is hybrid too helping maintain the city’s ecological reputation, which is among the best in China. The city’s rapid growth demands new solutions for optimising space. Shenzhen is one of the top 10 cities in the world for having the most skyscrapers. Today, its engineers are working on a solution to the ever present problem of parking by developing smart car parks that can automatically place cars in tight spaces while the driver simply walks away.
The technological achievements of the city's many companies are regularly showcased at popular international exhibitions and forums.

Like most cities Dublin continues to spread evermore outwards. It now needs to expand upwards. Living, working, recreation and services need co-location on prime city centre brownfield lands at densities not seen before. The aversion to apartment living and high rise development needs a tailored Irish solution to a global problem and one that is sustainable.
The Key Stats
• 112 floors / 805m (top of crane);
• 1260 housing units over 84 floors;
• 195,000m² non-residential / civic uses over 15 double floors;
• 38,000 m² of elevated parks;
• Public funicular (simultaneous up / down) serving main floors.
• Construction Period – 7-10 years (on-gong renovation thereafter)
The Detail + Concept
Like most cities Dublin continues to spread evermore outwards. It now needs to expand upwards. Living, working, recreation and services need co-location on prime city centre brownfield lands at densities not seen before.
The aversion to apartment living and high rise development needs a tailored Irish solution to a global problem and one that is sustainable.
The goal for many in Dublin remains house ownership and the ability to adapt or extend this property over time to suit changing circumstances. Equally important is the front and rear garden and a setting that promotes a sense of neighbourhood and community. These are aspects of planned suburbs that have always existed in Ireland from the expansion of suburbs of Georgian Dublin to the 20th century housing developments built in response to population growth.
The Habistrata proposes a model for living in Dublin which looks towards the 22nd century. A vertical framework infrastructure is provided by the state, conceived of as a long term building project, which is ever changing and ever developing. The expansion of these vertical suburbs along the north docks of Dublin will create a south facing network of waterfront living, cultural activities and recreation. Key to this master plan concept is a new bridge link - connecting the city to the 5km long Dollymount Strand.
The state, as developer, can choose to sell plots to the private market (freehold or leasehold), provide social housing or generate income from the private rental sector depending on market and societal demand. This combined revenue in conjunction with traditional municipal taxes serve to part fund the infrastructure.
Within this vertical framework, plots are provided of a fixed dimension and height - similar to a standard 3 bed suburban semi-detached plot. Depending on need, multiple plots can be purchased side by side or above each other or both. The plot is then developed according to means with the ability to extend or alter the property over time.
All housing units are own door and allow for a front and rear garden - sized to suit preference and orientation. A dedicated construction core and crane allow for lifelong renovations. The result is a neighbourhood created by and shaped by its residents which will change over the decades to reflect changing needs and trends. This is similar to the transformation that traditional suburbs have and continue to undergo with extensions and infill development.
Each floor contains between 15 and 20 units giving it the size of a typical cul-de-sac where all neighbours can potentially all know one another. The means of vertical and horizontal circulation encourages circulation within ‘streets’ without the windowless corridors associated with apartment living. Areas of each floor are left un-built to provide small scale neighbourhood corner parks and playgrounds. Larger areas of open space link several local neighbourhoods together to create a wider sense of place. Vertical circulation through the linked green spaces is encouraged with longer journeys undertaken on a scheduled communal funicular service - one going up as the other comes down.
Interspersed between each of the residential zones is a non-residential or civic use. This can vary from shops to recreation, nursing home to healthcare and office to schools. The larger floor plates provide the core structure and supporting key areas of open space above. They also serve as way-finding devices and landmarks. The attraction throughout is the access to citywide panoramic views and uninterrupted sunrise and sunset.
The sheer height is in recognition of the ever increasing value and scarcity of land. This is an iconic gesture towards a cyclic housing shortage problem which needs a dramatic shift in public consensus to deliver. It has to be accepted by the citizens and created by the citizens to succeed and be sustainable on a long term and inter-generational basis.

From G20 to G2? (2-April-09)
In this video, CIGI Senior Fellow Gregory Chin comments on the development of comprehensive relations between the US and China. In the weeks before the G20 London Summit, senior Chinese officials advocated for serious reforms of the global financial and monetary architecture. This ambitious posturing has led many observers to dub a new G2 of the US and China, the reigning and challenging world economic powers, with two bilateral meetings expected in 2009.

Making of Canton Silk by Loom Loop
The gambiered Canton silk is one of the famous traditional fabrics of Guangzhou China with nearly 400 years history. It is manufactured by dip-dyeing in dye yam solution, and insulated under the burning sun. The production uses solar energy which is clean, reproducible energy, and environmental friendly. With the domination of fast fashion and shopping mall culture, clothes lack individuality and quality, on the other hand of the spectrum high end brands are charging excessive amount for good quality garments, large proportion of the costs goes to marketing and rent, not necessarily on the design and quality of the fabric.
Our vision is through creativity and design we will conserve the value of this fabric and its technique which represent traditional culture and craftsmanship and produce high quality clothes that reflects its true value.
