WEST SOMERSET RAILWAY Many Years Ago Part 5
When Brunel's original broad guage West Somerset Railway was built from the mainline at Taunton in the 1860's its destination was the port of Watchet to bring in and take out goods from the Ships.Ten years later the line was extended to Minehead to also cater for holiday makers visiting the town. The whole line was converted eventually to standard guage in 1882. We are now looking at stations in that extension by visiting Washford and Blue Anchor. Over a hundred years later in 1971 British Railways decided the railway was not running at a sufficient profit so after trunkating facilities and services eventually decided to close the whole railway. Many facilities along the line were demolished.and soon grass grew to knee height between the tracks and in the station gardens. In 1976 volunteers formed a new West Somerset Railway and started to restore the railway back to life.Work at Washford was mostly carried out by enthusiasts from the Somerset & Dorset Railway Trust who had relocated there from Radstock. They rebuilt the sidings and goods shed at the station to hold rolling stock and refitted the redundant signal box with the mechanism from Midford on the S&D Railway which had also been closed. By1989 when the video was taken, most of the station had been restored and a museum dedicated to the S&D established. The undergrowth at the Blue Anchor end of the platform had still to be cleared. The little boy on the platform was earlier seen in part 4 boarding the train at Watchet. He was obviously a budding railway enthusiast and today probably he and his sister have a family of their own! The views at Blue Anchor closely resemble those seen today. A wider railway museum had also been established there. Originally there was only a single track at the station, with one siding which was later removed. The signal box was only 2/3 of the height.

Somerset & Dorset joint Railway Trust 0-4-0 Peckett 'Kilmersdon' (built 1929) passes through Watchet station on the West Somerset Railway (WSR), England, enroute to a Steam Rally at Norton Fitzwarren., accompanied by S&DJtR six wheel carriage No. 4 and London & South Western Railway (LSWR) Brake Van (Road Van - in SR Livery). Progress was deliberately slow with regular stops in open countryside for checks on the wheel bearings of the loco and stock. A Sentinel shunter was put on the front of the train at Williton station. It has to be remembered that this particular loco spent most of its life shunting half a dozen full and empty 4 wheeled coal waggons back and forth, a few hundred meters, at Kilmersdon Colliery near Radstock.
VISITING WESTONZOYLAND PUMPING STATION MUSEUM SOMERSET Part 2
Description We start with a quick look around followed by more detailed inspection of the many active exhibits. Please disregard all references to the canal at the site, because the water is being pumped not into that, as I first thought, but from a network of drainage ditches on the Somerset Levels into the nearby River Parrett.
It is great that people have been able to save and restore these mechanical marvels for us to see today. They do have more similar devices in storage waiting for more money and buildings to house them.

THE BONNIE PIPES OF LOCH WATCHET
A chance meeting with Fred Bacon behind the museum on a windy but dry day in West Somerset UK on 11 January 2014.. It was so good to catch up with this local character who has entertained many, so far from Scotland! It was also a relief to enjoy a rare dry and sunny day recently that wasn't too cold!

Train Simulator West Somerset Route TS2020 compared to TSW2020
No Music.. No Talking... Just Comparing The West Somerset routes in both TS2020 and TSW2020.. Both purchased ON SALE.. as always. At least the TS2020 has the Workshop (When they fix it) to expand it and a Steam Engine! There is just so much more to do in TS2020, and to me, TS2020 has the cleaner overlay... So far, to me, TS2020 is the metal that feels more real. TSW2020 looks like shiny plastic.. But with time.. plastics improve, Sometimes out doing their metal counterparts. Oh shoot..it's just a personal preference is all... have a look and leave an opinion..
The Sales Pitch:
At 20 miles, the line is the longest standard gauge heritage railway in the UK, running through some of Somerset’s most picturesque landscapes. The line is also popular with enthusiasts and rail fans due to its resident roster of GWR and S&DJR locomotives, and regular visiting locomotives on rail tours or for galas.
Starting out on the sea front at Minehead, the line heads south east along the coast to Dunster and Watchet, before heading inland to Williton where the oldest signal box on the line stands. Climbing out of Williton along the side of the Quantock Hills – where passengers are afforded stunning views across the Somerset countryside – the line reaches its summit at Crowcombe Heathfield before descending down the steep 1 in 81 decline to Bishops Lydeard.

We drove the A39 coast road on the hottest day of the year... and it RAINED!
A fun little drive (despite the weather) on the North Somerset A39 coast road between Minehead and Lynmouth, taking in the village of Porlock, the Valley of Rocks, and a few surprises along the way. While parked in a lay-by checking cameras, we were passed by a mad Civic at full chat, which was pretty cool! We'd driven this road before, but in my VW T5 while camping at the nearby Exmoor national park, so a return along this route had been planned for a while. Despite it being the hottest day of the year so far in 2019 across most of the country, North Somerset was overcast, with heavy localised showers, which we fell victim to as we were leaving Porlock. But all in all, a great fun drive, some of the highlights of which are documented in this video.

WSR 'Somerset & Dorset 50th Anniversary of Closure Gala' visit Sunday 13/03/2016
As in 1996 & 2006, the West Somerset Railway's 2016 Spring Steam Gala theme was the anniversary of closure of the much loved Somerset & Dorest railway in March 1966, which ran from Bath Green Park to Bournemouth West.
The railway's Spring Steam Gala returned to a two weekend six day format this year, with the first weekend being held over the actual date of closure (6th March). Six steam locomotives were hired in to star alongside two of the railway's resident fleet (of which both were making their first appearances since overhaul), all being of classes that worked over the S&D during it's 104 year history. These were -
| S&DJR 2-8-0 '7F' BR number 53808 (S&DJR number 88; resident)
| S&DJR 2-8-0 '7F' BR number 53809 (S&DJR number 89)
| BR(S) 4-6-2 Rebuilt 'Battle of Britain' class number 34053 'Sir Keith Park' (which ran as 34098 'Templecombe').
| SR 4-6-2 original 'Battle of Britain' class number 34070 'Manston'
| LMS 0-6-0 '4F' number 44422 (resident)
| LMS 2-8-0 '8F' number 48624
| BR 2-6-4T Standard 4MT tank number 80072 (which ran as 80043)
| BR 2-10-0 Standard '9F' number 92214
Numbers 34053 & 48624 were making their débuts on the Minehead branch.
Two industrial tanks also took part, working at Minehead on shuttle trips in and out of the station using a S&DJR six-wheeled first class carriage was Peckett tank number 1788 'Kilmersdon' and shunting at Washford yard was Andrew Barclay number 1219.
Please note that the industrials plus numbers 34053, 44422 & 80072 do not feature in this video but other than 1219 & 44422 can be found in other videos of mine. 34053 was not in use on the day of my visit and 44422 was confined to Dunster shunt duties (a photo of which is seen at the begin of this video).
The shot at Horse Parks is one I have wanted to get for a while and by chance I had the landowners permission to use the location. The shot would have been in a lot better conditions had the train ran on time as the 46 minute delay meant the train ran past Horse Parks minutes before sunset.
The event saw the release of a new ale from Quantock Brewery, Quantock Gold '76, which celebrates 40 years of the West Somerset Railway (and got a thumbs up from me!).
