Taunton Priorswood to Town Centre Commute
Why sit in traffic when you can cycle to town without going on main roads at all in just 11 minutes?
I'll be posting videos of everyday cycling in Taunton, Somerset. Why?
Firstly, to encourage people with underused bikes to get them out of the shed and use them. A lot of people simply don't know about many of the cycling facilities in town, so I'll use this site to show you.
Secondly, to highlight where improvements are needed, whether it is poor surfaces, dodgy junctions, or bad signage. I'll ask Somerset County Council to action these.
First up is a video of the cycleroute from Priorswood to the Town Centre, all off main roads and taking just 11 minutes at a steady pace (about 14mph).
Why not give it a try? It's a lot quicker and cheaper than driving and parking or catching the bus.
Note at 4:44 there is now a new cycleroute direct to the railway station.
Note at 4:56 there is a left turn down onto the canal towpath leading to Maidenbrook and Nerrols and the Crown Industrial Estate, and further on to Bathpool.
Note at 5:07 there is a left turn onto a shared use path alongside the River Tone leading to Hankridge.
A few points worth noting for SCC:
The surface under and between the two underpasses (Obridge and especially Toneway) was poor, but has recently been resurfaced. But, the surface of the Victoria Parkway (7:08) underpass and eastern approach to it remains dreadful!
At the junction of the path after the Toneway underpass with the road (6:13), it is not obvious which way the cycleroute goes. A town centre right sign would help.
The cyclists dismount sign on the contraflow section (9:15) is pointless. The road coming from the left is clearly marked give way. Cyclists should have right of way here. The surface and detailing of the contraflow section, particularly the pavement section, is poor.

Hungerford is a historic market town and civil parish in Berkshire, England, 8 miles west of Newbury, 9 miles east of Marlborough, 30 miles northeast of Salisbury and 67 miles west of London. The Kennet and Avon Canal passes through the town from the west alongside the River Dun , a major tributary of the River Kennet. The confluence with the Kennet is to the north of the centre whence canal and river both continue east. Amenities include schools, shops, cafés, restaurants, and facilities for the main national sports. The a railway station is a minor stop on the London to Exeter (via Taunton) Line.
Hungerford is a slight abbreviation and vowel shift from a Saxon name meaning 'Hanging Wood Ford'. The town’s symbol is the six-pointed star and crescent moon. The place does not occur in the Domesday Book of 1086, but certainly existed by 1173. By 1241, it called itself a borough. In the late 14th century, John of Gaunt was medieval lord of the manor and he granted the people the lucrative fishing rights on the River Kennet.
The noble family of Walter Hungerford, 1st Baron Hungerford originated from the town (c. 1450–1450), although after three generations the title passed to Mary, Baroness Hungerford who married Sir Edward (afterwards Lord) Hasting and the family seat moved to Heytesbury, Wiltshire.
During the English Civil War, the Earl of Essex and his army spent the night here in June 1644. In October of the same year, the Earl of Manchester’s cavalry were also quartered in the town. Then, in the November, the King’s forces arrived in Hungerford on their way to Abingdon.
During the Glorious Revolution of 1688, William of Orange was offered the Crown of England while staying at the Bear Inn in Hungerford. The Hungerford land south of the Kennet was for the centuries, until an 18th-century widespread growth in cultivation the area, in Savernake Forest.
St. Lawrence's parish church stands next to the Kennet and Avon Canal. It was rebuilt in 1814–1816 by John Pinch the elder in Gothic Revival style and refurbished again in the 1850s. In the late 19th century, two policeman were shot by poachers in Eddington. Their memorial crosses still stand where they fell.
Hungerford is on the River Dun. It is the westernmost town in Berkshire, on the border with Wiltshire. It is in the North Wessex Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The highest point in the entire South East England region is the 297 m (974 ft) summit of Walbury Hill, centred 4 miles (7 km) from the town centre. The Kennet and Avon Canal separates Hungerford from what might be described as the town's only suburb, the hamlet of Eddington.
Hungerford is situated on several transport routes, of both historic and current importance, including the M4 motorway (junction 14), the Old Bath Road (A4), and the Kennet and Avon Canal (opened 1811). It also has a railway station on the Reading to Taunton line; a reasonable rail service to Newbury, Reading and London means that the Hungerford has developed into something of a dormitory town which has been slowly expanding since the 1980s. Many residents commute to nearby towns such as Newbury, Swindon, Marlborough, Thatcham and Reading.

The Somerset Space Walk is a sculpture trail model of the solar system, located in Somerset, England. The model uses the towpath of the 22 kilometers Bridgwater and Taunton Canal to display a model of the Sun and its planets in their proportionally correct sizes and distances apart. Unusually for a solar system model, there are two sets of planets.
Aware of the inadequacies of printed pictures of the Solar System, the Space Walk was designed by inventor Pip Youngman as a way of challenging our perceptions of space and experiencing the vastness of our own Solar System.
The model is built to a scale of 1:530,000,000, meaning that one millimetre on the model equates to 530 kilometres. The Sun is sited at Higher Maunsel Lock, and one set of planets is installed in each direction along the canal towards Taunton and Bridgwater; the distance between the Sun and each model of Pluto being 11 kilometers. Fortunately for less hardy walkers, the inner planets are within 67 meters of the Sun, and near to the Maunsel Canal Centre at Lower Maunsel Lock, where a more detailed leaflet about the model is available.
The Space Walk was opened on 9 August 1997 by British astronomer Heather Couper. In 2007, a project team from Somerset County Council refurbished some of the models.
The Walk is a joint venture between the Taunton Solar Model Group and British Waterways, with support from Somerset County Council, Taunton Deane Borough Council and the Somerset Waterways Development Trust. The Taunton Solar Model Group comprised Pip Youngman, Trevor Hill – a local physics teacher who had been awarded the title of Institute of Physics Physics Teacher of the Year – and David Applegate who, during his time as Mayor of Taunton, had expressed a wish to see some kind of science initiative in the area. Pip came up with the idea for the Space Walk, and Trevor assisted by calculating the respective positions and sizes of the planets.

Bridgwater & Taunton Canal, October 2018, Part 1
With a day off I decided to board a train from Taunton to Bridgwater and cycle back along the Bridgwater and Taunton Canal. Running for 14.5 miles from Bridgwater to Taunton the canal runs through the unique lowland areas of Somerset, of which many parts have been designated a Site of Specific Scientific Interest.
Part 1 takes us through the outskirts of Bridgwater and in to open countryside, passing through Fordgate and North Newton en route to Maunsel Lock
