Guitar Museum featuring rare instruments opens in Nashville
(27 Apr 2017) RARE GUITARS ON DISPLAY IN NASHVILLE
A unique collection of rare guitars is now on display in Nashville at Belmont University.
Bluegrass musician and singer Ricky Skaggs and country star Vince Gill got a chance to play some of the rare instruments during the grand opening of the Gallery of Iconic Guitars on Tuesday (25 APRIL 2017).
The collection belonged to the late Steven Kern Shaw, who was a philanthropist and the grandson of Jerome Kern who was one of America's foremost composers of musical theater and popular music.
Some of the instruments on display include: a 1939 Martin D-45, one of only 91 made; a 1923 Gibson F-5 mandolin, signed by designer Lloyd Loar; and a 1887 Martin 0-28.
It's really amazing quality stuff, said Skaggs, an avid collector himself. In my whole lifetime, I have only held three D-45 pre war guitars. Two of them are in here. It's really amazing.
Gill said what is unique is that Belmont University will allow these instruments to be played, not just stuck behind glass.
If you are a nut for instruments, they are not only beautiful to look at, Gill said. For the opportunity for some of these kids are going to get to maybe use some of these instruments, record with some of these instruments and get a real understanding of what a fine fine instrument can do.
Gill said that while these instruments weren't famous for who owned them or played them like instruments at the Country Music Hall of Fame, they are famous as works of art.
They are important to our history, Gill said. They paint our history, they tell our history just as much as the songs that were written on them and the songs that were sung on them.
Skaggs said the gallery allows musicians to get very close to the instruments, even close enough to smell them.
You can actually go up and smell, Skaggs said. You can put your nose in the hole, which I love to do. You can smell these instruments. There's something about smell that takes you back to your grandma's attic, you know, a hope chest or something like that. But these instruments, I don't think they want people to just come up and grab them cause there is security here. But to be able to be close enough to actually see the grain in the instrument, to see the bridge and to see all these things, the intricacies of how they were made and designed. And to look at them and compare them with other guitars. And how just a slight little difference of wood, different carving the top, makes a vast amount of difference in how they sound.

Larry Sheridan and Robin Ruddy are the owners and driving force behind Best Built Songs. They have completely renovated a 1920's bungalow on 16th Avenue South (Nashville's Music Row) and taken it from a run down 1600 square foot building to a gorgeous 4200 square foot, state of the art recording facility and offices.
Larry's previous business, Best Built-Ins, designed and created high quality built-in cabinetry and furniture -- his quality craftsmanship is evident throughout their new facility.
In 1994, they gave up the wood design business in favor of the music industry and started Best Built Songs. Larry is involved in signing new songs and writers and pitching material for the company.
Robin is an in-demand session player and live performer in Nashville. She sings, plays pedal steel, banjo, dobro, guitar, and mandolin. She is also a staff writer for Best Built.
Robin Ruddy a singer/songwriter, is also a talented multi-instrumentalist. She plays Pedal Steel, banjo, guitar, and dobro. She has played with Rod Stewart on his world tour. In the first 18-months they traveled to over 25 countries. She has also played with Shania Twain, Ray Stevens, Vince Gill, Randy Travis, Terry Clark, Deborah Allen, and many more! She co-owns Best Built Songs, The Parlor Studio (A Grammy winning recording studio), Parlor Productions, Ultimate Event Nashville, and Music Row Realty with Larry Sheridan.

The Parlor Studio / Best Built Songs is owned by Larry Sheridan and Robin Ruddy. Larry and Robin moved to Nashville in 1986 and have been steadily growing their music business together ever since.
In 1994 Larry and Robin started the publishing company Best Built Songs literally from their kitchen table. They are both very involved in signing new songs and writers and pitching material for the company. When they finally outgrew the one room studio and office in their house they started looking for a new home for Best Built Songs, and for the studio.
That new home was an old bungalow on Music Row that was then owned by Randy Travis and was used as a storage place for his concessions. They bought the house in 1997 and renovated it to make what is now known as The Parlor Studio and the offices of Best Built Songs.
Larry has a very strong musical background having played the solo circuit in New York City in the 70's while pursuing his jazz studies, but it is his background in architecture and cabinet making that made this studio what it is today. Larry designed and built The Parlor Studio. He used Michael Cronin as an acoustical advisor and it has been said time and time again that the room is sonically fantastic. It really works. We get great drum sounds in the 16' high tracking room.
Robin grew up in Miami, Florida and started playing the bluegrass circuit in North Carolina and Washington DC in the 70's and 80's. They met while they were living in DC and discovered their mutual love for songwriting. In the summer of 1986 they decided to pack up the u-haul and make the move to Nashville.
