February summer of 2014 - an elephant seal making its way north to warmer waters from Antarctica has stopped off at Perth's Sorrento beach (Hillarys) for a few days of relaxing and basking in the sun. News reports from 7, 9 and 10.
The idiot who went up to touch it is just that - an idiot, but at least the kids around him aren't that stupid. Watch and wonder in awe from a safe and respectful distance, but unless they need help leave wildlife alone!

Sorrento Beach Perth Australia Travel Review - Tripcam HD
Sorrento Beach (WA 858) is one of Perth's traditional northern beach suburbs and site of the Sorrento Surf Life Saving Club. Waves average about 1 m and maintain a relatively steep beach with a narrow, continuous attached bar.
It is part of the first continuous sandy beach north of Trigg Island. However, problems with beach erosion have lead to the construction of three 50 m long rock groynes across the 600 m long beach.
The groynes are located either side of the surf club, while 500 m north of the club is the large curving southern breakwater of Hillarys Boat Harbour, which extends 1 km out to sea.
There is a large car park off the highway adjacent to the surf club. Today the surf club with its high watchtower sits between the two groynes, with a seawall fronting the club and car park.

In November 2012, Sorrento Surf Life Saving Club sent its first IRB team to compete in the World Championships, at Glenelg Beach, South Australia. This film shows our team members in action during their rigorous training sessions in Perth, Western Australia. All the competition events are designed around the necessary skills required by crew members to rescue swimmers and surfers who get into trouble in the surf around our coast every year.
Taking part in these exhilarating, adrenalin-pumping racing events attracts members of the club who thrive in the speed, spray and suspense inherent in riding the oceans' unpredictable surface. In real life rescue situations it takes skill, knowledge, courage and a cool head to negotiate the surf zone with its boat flipping power. Racing in the World's celebrates the dedication of our volunteers' enthusiasm for the sport.
