ioux Falls (/ˌsuː ˈfɔːlz/) (Lakota: Íŋyaŋ Okábleča Otȟúŋwahe;[7] Stone Shatter City) is the most populous city in the U.S. state of South Dakota and the 145th-most populous city in the United States. It is the county seat of Minnehaha County[8] and also extends into Lincoln County to the south. It is the 47th-fastest-growing city in the United States[9] and the fastest-growing metro area in South Dakota, with a population increase of 22% between 2000 and 2010.[10]
As of 2018, Sioux Falls had an estimated population of 183,200.[11] The metropolitan population of 251,854 accounts for 29% of South Dakota's population. It is also the primary city of the Sioux Falls-Sioux City Designated Market Area (DMA), a larger media market region that covers parts of four states and has a population of 1,043,450.[12] Chartered in 1856 on the banks of the Big Sioux River, the city is situated in the rolling hills at the junction of Interstate 90 and Interstate 29.Landmarks

Transportation
Roads
Most residents of Sioux Falls travel and commute by car. Interstate 90 passes east to west across the northern edge of the city, while Interstate 29 bisects the western portion of the city from the north and south. Interstate 229 forms a partial loop around Sioux Falls, and connects with Interstate 90 to the northeast and Interstate 29 to the southwest. A grid design system for city streets is the standard for the central (older) area of the city, while secondary streets in newer residential areas have largely abandoned this plan.
Due to current and expected regional growth, several large construction projects have been or will be undertaken. New interchanges have recently been added to Interstate 29. An interchange was also completed on I-90 at Marion Road. I-29 has recently been improved from I-90 to 57th Street. This upgrade includes additional lanes and auxiliary lanes. Over the next decade, the city of Sioux Falls and the South Dakota Department of Transportation plan to construct a limited-access highway around the outer edges of the city to the south and east known as South Dakota Highway 100.[97] This highway will start at the northern Tea exit (Exit 73 on I-29, 101st Street) and will travel east on 101st Street, and curve northeast east of Western Avenue, then turn northerly near Sycamore Avenue. The highway will end at the Timberline Avenue exit (Exit 402 on I-90).ompanies. The largest employers among these[29] are Wells Fargo and Citigroup. Other important financial service companies located in Sioux Falls include Great Western Bank, Western Surety Company (CNA Surety), Total Card Inc., Capital Card Services, Midland National Life Insurance Company, MetaBank, and First Premier Bank.
Sioux Falls is a significant regional health care center. There are four major hospitals in Sioux Falls: Sanford Health (formerly Sioux Valley), Avera McKennan Hospital, the South Dakota Veterans Affairs Hospital, and the Avera Heart Hospital of South Dakota. Sanford Health and Avera Health are the largest and second largest employers in the city, respectively. Emergency medical services (EMS) are provided by Paramedics Plus and Sioux Falls Fire Rescue.
Companies based in Sioux Falls include Raven Industries, retailers Lewis Drug and Sunshine Foods, as well as communications companies SONIFI Solutions and Midcontinent Communications.
Because of the relatively long distances between Sioux Falls and larger cities, Sioux Falls has emerged as an important regional center of shopping and dining. The Empire Mall, with over 180

Dramatic Badlands National Park, South Dakota
The dramatic scenery of the Badlands draws visitors from around the world. Located in southwestern South Dakota, Badlands National Park consists of 244,000 acres of sharply eroded buttes, pinnacles and spires surrounded by a mixed-grass prairie ecosystem. These striking geologic deposits contain one of the world's richest fossil beds. How did the Badlands form? Learn the geologic story and find out about the wildlife at Badlands in this video.
Ancient mammals such as the rhino, horse, and saber-toothed cat once roamed here. In Badlands National Park, scientists have observed 39 mammal species, 9 reptile species, 6 amphibian species, 206 bird species, and 69 butterfly species. Four species of wildlife have been reintroduced into the Badlands since its establishment as a National Monument in 1939. The black-footed ferret, bighorn sheep, bison, and swift fox, once exterminated from the area's mixed grass prairie, are again thriving in their native habitat.
The Badlands were formed by the geologic forces of deposition and erosion. Deposition of sediments began 69 million years ago when an ancient sea stretched across what is now the Great Plains. After the sea retreated, successive land environments, including rivers and flood plains, continued to deposit sediments. Although the major period of deposition ended 28 million years ago, significant erosion of the Badlands did not begin until a mere half a million years ago. Erosion continues to carve the Badlands buttes today. Eventually, the Badlands will completely erode away.
One of the most complete fossil accumulations in North America is found within the park. The rocks and fossils preserve evidence of ancient ecosystems and give scientists clues about how early mammal species lived. Numerous important finds from the area have informed scientists about ancient animals, climates, and ecosystems from different geologic time periods.
Oligocene fossil remains include camels, three-toed horses, oreodonts, antelope-like animals, rhinoceroses, deer-like mammals, rabbits, beavers, creodonts, land turtles, rodents and birds. Marine fossils are found in deposits of an ancient sea that existed in the region some 75 to 67 millionyears ago during the Cretaceous period. Fossils found in the Pierre Shale and Fox Hills Formations include ammonites, nautiloids, fish, marine reptiles, and turtles.
During the Age of Dinosaurs, a warm, shallow sea covered the Great Plains, including what is now Badlands. Since dinosaurs were land creatures, no fossils of these animals have been found in the park. Giant marine lizards called mosasaurs swam in the ancient sea, along with sea turtles and fish.
The spectacular vertebrate fossils preserved within the White River Badlands have been studied extensively since 1846 and are included in museum collections throughout the world.
TRAVEL & TOURISM
The Badlands provide considerable opportunities for discovery and exploration. From camping and hiking to bird watching and auto-touring, visitors to Badlands National Park can enjoy countless outdoor adventures.
The park's main visitor center, the Ben Reifel Visitor Center, is open daily all year, except Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year's Day. Cedar Pass Lodge is the only lodging and restaurant in the park and offers visitors a memorable stay. There are two designated campgrounds available at the park: Cedar Pass Campground and Sage Creek Primitive Campground.
Badlands National Park is located 75 miles east of Rapid City, South Dakota. The Rapid City Regional Airport (RAP) is located approximately 70 miles (one hour), west of the park, off Highway 44. Car rental services are available at the airport.
Interstate 90 (I-90) is located directly north of the park and provides access to the Hwy 240 Badlands Loop Road. State Highway 44 provides an alternate, scenic access to the park and intersects Highway 377 in the town of Interior.
Park Headquarters: 25216 Ben Reifel Road, Interior, SD 57750.

Missouri River on Interstate 90 near Chamberlain South Dakota
Near Rapid City at the Wyoming border I-90 is a four-lane divided highway with a grass median. In the Sioux Falls area, I-90 intersects I-29 and continues east a short distance to Minnesota. I-90 is the longest east–west thoroughfare in South Dakota. This interstate goes through Mitchell, Sioux Falls, and Rapid City. It does not go through the state capital of Pierre.
The South Dakota section of I-90 is defined at South Dakota Codified Laws § 31-4-184.[4]
Chamberlain (Lakota: Makȟáthipi;[7] Dirt House) is a city in Brule County, South Dakota, United States. The population was 2,387 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Brule County.[8] Chamberlain is home to the Akta Lakota Museum and Cultural Center,[9] which profiles the lives of nomadic northern Plains Indians. Chamberlain is also the home of the South Dakota Hall of Fame.Chamberlain was laid out in the early 1880s.[10] The town was named after Selah Chamberlain, a railroad director of the Chicago, Milwaukee and St. Paul Railway.[11][12]According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 7.84 square miles (20.31 km2), of which, 6.64 square miles (17.20 km2) is land and 1.20 square miles (3.11 km2) is water.[2]
The Missouri River is the longest river in North America.[13] Rising in the Rocky Mountains of western Montana, the Missouri flows east and south for 2,341 miles (3,767 km)[9] before entering the Mississippi River north of St. Louis, Missouri. The river takes drainage from a sparsely populated, semi-arid watershed of more than half a million square miles (1,300,000 km2), which includes parts of ten U.S. states and two Canadian provinces. When combined with the lower Mississippi River, it forms the world's fourth longest river system.[13]

Dakota Life: Maps and Borders
Dakota Pathways: A History was a 20-part series used by Educator's across South Dakota for use in their classrooms. The 14 minute long segments explore some of the history of South Dakota. Maps and Borders is the 12th segment produced in the series.
First, you will turn right at the hwy 50 and 46 junction. Travel until you get to the 2nd gravel road. Then you will turn left and drive past the old oak tree on the right side of the road. Drive until you come to a fork in the road. You will take the road with the little mulberry bush next to it. Drive past the 2nd cedar tree on the left side and turn right. My house is the third white house on the right side of the road next to the big red barn. If you get lost stop and ask for directions to the old William Smith house. Good luck-you will need it.
Now let's try something a little different. First you need to travel two miles north of the hwy 50 and 46 junction. They you will turn west and travel 3 miles until you come to a fork in the road. Take the road that heads south. Travel 1.5 miles, then turn west on the dirt road. Travel 1.75 miles; my house is on the north side of the road.
Both of the hypothetical examples above describe the route to the same location. They seem very different, because the first example is unstructured using visual cues found on the road, while the second example uses standard directions like north and south. Places are also easier to find when a map can be used which includes roads, symbols, borders and a legend.
Cartographers make all types of maps. There are city maps, county maps, state maps, world maps, 911 maps and even topographical maps that show elevation difference and man-made features. The maps made today by places like the EROS Data Center are very detailed and exact.
Finding your exact location has improved drastically over the years from using compasses and longitude and latitude coordinates to using portable global positioning systems and satellites. Directions like turn right at the old fence post have been replaced by the push of a button.
