How to visit Grand Canyon south rim (advice from a local)
12 common questions asked of a Grand Canyon local regarding how best to visit the popular south rim of the national park.
Bright Angel Lodge , Grand Canyon National Park, Arizona, United States
A brief look at the simplest (and cheapest) accommodation at Bright Angel Lodge on the South Rim of the Grand Canyon and my first walk from the cabin to the Canyon edge...it really is very close.
The video starts with my first look inside the cabin (I am carrying all my bags and filming) which is the cheapest I could get but had to booked months in advance ($140 +tax per night room only). I then show a clip of my first walk to the canyon edge, only 60m or so from my cabin, which also happens to be the furthest one from the edge. Absolutely brilliant placing for stunning view the next morning.
The room was very basic, summed up by an old, non flat-screen TV. (Haven't seen one of those for years but still better than none at all which was the case at the north rim 2 days later.) No air conditioning but this really wasn't a problem, even in mid-August although the fan is noisy and light sleepers might struggle.
I didn't use any other facilities in the Lodge so cannot comment on how good or bad they are compared with other places. Overall, for access to the Canyon, I would have to say the cabins are perfect.

Grand Canyon National Park ~ Williams Arizona
While traveling through Arizona we stopped in Williams and stayed at the Grand Canyon Railway RV Park. During our stay there we explored the town of Williams and discovered that a portion of Historic Route 66 ran right through the town. We inquired around and got a map to see how far we could go on the old highway. After leaving Williams, we headed for the National Park and spent 3 days exploring and hiking. What an adventure!

Grand Canyon #1: From Flagstaff via US 180 & SR 64 to Grand Canyon Village in South Rim 2016-06-01
An annotated drive on the scenic & quickest route from Flagstaff to the South Rim of Grand Canyon national park for a day's stroll on a paved footpath along the canyon rim.
For first-timers choosing between one of the three routes, this one, the most direct, goes past no other center of settlement, connects to no other distant places, so has the lightest traffic volume. Once 5 - 10 minutes north of the least-congested north side of downtown Flagstaff, it is clear sailing to the first stop-sign at Valle, a motorists' service center an hour away, at the junction of US 180 (this highway) and State Road 64, the road which also carries traffic to and from Interstate 40 and the town of Williams in the south (all of which will appear on another drive video in this series). A few miles before the toll gate of the park is the last service town, Tusayan, of hotels and eateries, all charging premium prices.
On busy summer days, single-day visitors are advised by the national park's website to park their vehicles here (in Tusayan town), and take the park's free shuttle for entry into the park.
Nearly all of this lightly used road between Flagstaff and Valle, US 180, is a two-lane road (one lane in each direction), with occasional additional passing lane for traffic in one direction or the other.
On the day that I drove it in early June, the traffic was never heavy enough to form a line of vehicles waiting impatiently to pass a slow vehicle ahead, so the drive was most enjoyable (for me as well as for anyone catching up to me from behind).
US 180 is mostly straight, with frequent gentle curves not requiring significant speed reductions, but enough to break the monotony of the all straight-road drive.
For those who just want to get from Flagstaff to the South Rim of the Grand Canyon as quickly as possible for the day, this is the recommend route there and back.

Time Lapse Driving Tour of Grand Canyon National Park, AZ
The video follows this route:
This time lapse video was shot at Grand Canyon National Park Arizona, along East Rim Drive / U.S. 180 / AZ 64 on July 27th 2011 during a cross country road trip. We parked in the new Lot #1 (Yellow / Raven) and were just a few steps from the canyon rim.
We arrived at the park early and spent the cool overcast morning at the South Rim Visitor Center and walked along the rim until it cleared up and got hot. Next we headed East on E. Rim Drive stopping twice before continuing to Desert View. After visiting the Watch Tower we returned West on E. Rim Drive stopping at all the view points along the way to photograph the canyon at sunset.

The Grand Canyon - FULL SOUTH RIM OVERLOOK VIDEO TOUR (Grand Canyon National Park, AZ)
This is it and the camera never does it justice, but here is a video of The Grand Canyon from the South Rim Entrance!
Entry with a standard car is $30. I believe, like most US National Parks, gives you 7 day unlimited access. The park is 24 hours, but no overnight parking outside of designated camp areas. We bought an $80 year (365 day) pass which can be used at other parks like: Zion, Yellowstone etc.
There is a trail all along the South Rim ledge, so great for running and hiking the entire rim! You can also rent bikes, camp, lodge and use the free shuttle buses!
Accessing the Canyon TIPS:
- The South Rim has the BEST view points, hands down.
- The West Rim has a skywalk where you can walk along a glass ledge. I believe the price is aeound $80 and up for this 'package deal'. It's a lot closer to Las Vegas, but doesn't offer the best views.
- 277 miles long and an elevation of 6000 feet from the Colorado River. Have a fun climb!

Mather Point, Grand Canyon, AZ - US Trip 2013.mp4
Majestic mountains! Mather Point is behind the Grand Canyon Visitor Center, about 5 minutes walk away. Yavapai Point is about 20 minutes walk from Mather Point. Both are on South Rim. This clip was recorded on 20 January 2013 afternoon. The background music does not belong to me. The music is so beautiful and touching; and I thought it is appropriate for this clip. So I borrowed it from Youtube. It is called The Moon - Red Sky - Native American - Chant - Meditation by Katydidscorner. The credit goes to the owner of the music.

Year 1 Episode 12; RV'ing Arizona - Grand Canyon National Park
We had a great time visiting the Grand Canyon National Park. The views from the South Rim are amazing. We camped inside the park at Trailer Village and it's very neat to see the wildlife just wandering through the campground. There are shuttle buses provided to take you around the park, or a short walk will take you directly to the South Rim. We also drove out to see the Desert View Watchtower which is about 20 min from the main South Rim Visitor Center.

Best Views of Grand Canyon - South Rim | Arizona | USA
The South Rim is the most easy to get to part of the park and it is open all year. Elevations average 7000 feet (2134 m) above sea level.
From the visitor center, there are shuttles to take you around the different spots and view points of Grand Canyon. You can get a shuttle and trial map from the visitor center and plan accordingly based on the time you have to spend there.
Grand Canyon also provides some good stay such as the Yavapai lodge and you can also book your stay outside the Grand Canyon park for some affordable options or Airbnb. Camping on the site is also allowed which is close to the Yavapai point, which is my favorite spot for watching the sunrise.
Use the below link to book your stay at Airbnb and get $40 off of your first stay
The Mather point, and Desert view are my other favorite view spot of the Canyons. the Desert view has a watch tower which outlooks a massive and beautiful canyon and is very good spot to watch the sunset. Accessing the tower is free of charge and is open until evening.
