Vegan in Costa Rica #1: Puerto Viejo
Sorry for the shakiness! The next videos won't be as shaky, I promise!
Puerto Viejo was a lot of fun! I went to some of the best beaches I've ever been to, saw a lot of animals I didn't even know existed (like the Guatusa I totally thought was a cat before it turned to face me!) and visited Jaguar Rescue Center, a place where injured or orphaned animals go to recover and are cared for until they are ready to be returned to the wild.
As a vegan, I would never visit or support a zoo or any place that steals animals from the wild to use them as exhibition pieces for profit. That's not what this rescue center is, and they made it clear in their guided tour. I'm happy to support a place that is actually helping the animals and the environment, and whose first priority is making sure the animals are healthy and comfortable.
You can check out their website here:
The vegan restaurant I visited is called Mandala Café or Casa Mandala:
I stayed at Azania Bungalows:
If you'd like to see more pictures I took of this beautiful place (and delicious food), or if you want a more thorough description of what I did on these 2/3 days, check out my blog post:

Costa Rica Eight Days April-May 2011 Part 1
First trip to Costa Rica and we didn't stop until we reached the funky Caribbean village of Puerto Viejo. We saw and learned a lot on this first trip. It's good to plan ahead but expect the unexpected.
If you're into vacations that are off the beaten path, if you don't mind traveling on a budget and if you're looking for places that are secluded, tranquil and unspoiled you will appreciate these videos.

Cahuita's beaches, town, and flavor - Costa Rica
Hey friends!
This video is the end of our Cahuita series. In this video I show you the town of Cahuita the beaches, a little bit of the nightlife, and I recommend my favorite places to stay. This little reggae town is one of my favorite places in the world for it's small size, beautiful beaches, lovely food and people, and wildlife. As one expat who lives there said, Why would I leave? I live in paradise. A definite must see if you are into the relaxing side of visiting the country. Don't miss my other videos of Cahuita: the National Park, snorkeling, and cooking at Miss Edith's authentic Caribbean restaurant!

Puerto Viejo, Costa Rica - Jaguar Rescue Center - Sloth Episode
Puerto Viejo, Costa Rica is the main tourist destination on the Caribbean Coast of Costa Rica. And one of the top things to do in Puerto Viejo is to visit the Jaguar Rescue Center. Even though you will probably encounter a lot of Costa Rican wildlife while visiting the Talamanca region of Limón, the Jaguar Rescue Center is the best place to see sloths, monkeys, and other animals of Costa Rica that have been rescued and cared back to health. You will also learn a lot about these animals and how to help protect them. A great thing to do during your family vacation in Puerto Viejo.

What is the Jaguar Rescue Center?
The Jaguar Rescue Center is a temporary or permanent home for ill, injured and orphaned animals. With a focus on birds, reptiles, amphibians and small primates, the JRC provides veterinary services, round-the-clock care and comfort to animals that would otherwise be unable to survive in the rainforest or the sea of the Caribbean.
Why Jaguar?
The Jaguar is the most hunted endangered animal in the Americas. It’s a symbol of nature that suffers from a great threat of extinction.
In 2007 a baby jaguar was given to Encar and Sandro. Her mother had been murdered because local farmers suspected she had killed two goats. The baby jaguar was dehydrated and very sick. Encar and Sandro did everything they could to save it but in the end, the endangered baby jaguar died. Encar and Sandro decided to name their animal rescue center in honor of her and the Jaguar Rescue Center was born.
The jaguar represents the spirit of the king of the jungle and her memory lives on in each animal they save. The spirit of that original baby jaguar lives on in every animal we rescue and our mission of Help Us Help Them continues in her honor.
The primary goal of the JRC is to rehabilitate animals and reintroduce them back into their native habitats. Monkeys, birds, sloths, snakes and more are brought to the JRC, and treated by professional veterinarians, caregivers and a hard-working team of staff and volunteers. Food is lovingly prepared, medication is administered, and all animals get personal contact with their caregivers. When they are healed and healthy, most animals are reintroduced to their native habitats to live out their lives in the land that is their home.
For some of the friends brought to the JRC, reintroduction isn’t possible due to the nature of their illness or injuries, and these animals find a permanent, loving home at the JRC, cared for by a team of staff and volunteers, living in habitats that mimic their lives outside the JRC.
In addition to the animal-care services, the JRC provides educational services to the residents and visitors of Costa Rica, as well as internship and research opportunities for biologists, veterinarians, and researchers from around the world.
