The Pedaling Revolution in Reykjavík | Gísli Marteinn Baldursson | TEDxReykjavík
In only a decade, from 2002 to 2012, the number of trips made on a bicycle in Reykjavík grew ten-times. More trips are made on a bicycle in Reykjavík than in any large American city and this small capital has its sight on becoming one of the great bicycle capitals in the world. How did this happen, and what role did the economic crash in 2008 have in this development?
Gísli Marteinn Baldursson is a former city counselor for Reykjavík and a television talk-show host. He has been a key figure in putting sustainable urban planning on the political agenda in Reykjavík and Iceland. Concerned with increasing urban sprawl, increased traffic, air and water pollution and public health concerns like obesity, Gísli has devoted himself to speaking, writing and otherwise raising awareness about the need for re-densification and sustainable planning in Reykjavík. Harvard University recently choose Gísli as one of ten people to be a Loeb Fellow at the Graduate School of Design for the academic year of 2014-15.

The Real Virtual - Predicting, Programming and Publishing Life: Jón Páll Eyjólfsson at TEDxReykjavík
Jón Páll states that we use the camera on our phone as a filter for reality, to take control of the narrative of our lives. With our cameras we reduce reality and boil it down to a picture on Instagram that our friends, strangers and our followers can like, share and compare to their own filter of the world. More and more of our time is consumed by comparing experiences and planning them rather than actually really experiencing them. No longer do we experience the thrill of getting lost or having to ask directions or ask a friend how things are going, it is pointless you have already read his narrative on Facebook.
Jón Páll Eyjólfsson graduated as an actor from East 15 acting school in London England in 2000. He has worked with various companies as an actor including the National Theatre in Iceland, Reykjavik City Theatre and The Young Vic Theatre Company in London. Jón Páll has directed productions at National Theatre in Iceland, Reykjavik City Theatre, Akureyri Theater Company and with independent theatre companies. He is also part of MINDGROUP, an open experiment in collective theatre work. He teaches courses on devised theatre/directing at Iceland Academy of the Arts.

Three Generations Theory: Sigríður María Egilsdóttir at TEDxReykjavík
It takes three generations to make a musician: the first to leave poverty, the second to go to school and the third to master the instrument. This talk is centered around women's rights and how this metaphor can be applied to describe, not only this, but all human rights' battles -- and how it can further their advancement.
Sigríður María was born and raised in Reykjavík, Iceland, to parents Herdís and Egill, in 1993. She graduated from the Commercial College of Iceland in 2013. During her time in the Commercial College she participated in several debating and public speaking competitions. In 2011 and 2012 she won the Icelandic national public speaking competition, hosted by the ESU, and went on to compete on Iceland's behalf in the International Public Speaking Competition in London. In 2013 she became Iceland's Debater, after being the top scoring debater in the final of the national debating competition. Sigríður is an avid advocator for equality for both women and men.

TEDxReykjavik - Hrund Gunnsteinsdottir - Borderlessness
Borderlessness
Hrund Gunnsteinsdottir is a poet and consultant at [Krád]consulting which is an umbrella for her various work. Most problems are solved technically by analyzing and fixing individual parts because we have to focus our efforts. But wouldn't it be more effective to look at the bigger picture and solve the problem as a whole?

Take a tour of the Cozy 3 XL automatic, 4x4 campervan by Cozy Campers in Iceland. This vehicle was our transportation AND our home for our 8-day trip around Iceland's Ring Road. (Not-to-mention, the camper was perfectly suitable to take on the country's infamous F-roads).

I was not asked to make this video -- instead, I wanted to highlight one of the best parts of our trip -- the campervan! I had a hard time choosing from the many options ahead of our April trip, but am so glad to have chosen Cozy Campers. The staff was incredibly personable and the camper design, itself, was very well thought out. I wanted to show it off and hopefully help anyone who is looking for a little bit of insight ahead of their Iceland adventure!

Slow Food - Good, Clean and Fair: Dominique Plédel Jónsson at TEDxReykjavík
You could explain Slow Food in only 3 words and 30 seconds: our food needs to be good, clean and fair. But you need to go further and realize that good food is everybody's right, not only the right of those who can afford it; that clean means food without chemicals, and last but not least food at a fair price for the farmer's work and consumer's purse. We need to bring back respect for our food and those who grow it - it is much more than just a price tag.
Dominique was born in Paris in 1948 and studied geography at Paris University. Her studies lead her first to Iceland and after spending two summers studying, she settled there in 1970. She started working for the Commercial Department of the French Embassy in Iceland in 1971 and was then posted in Denmark for 6 years and Norway for 3 years. She founded Vínskólinn in 2006 and is still running it successfully while at the same time working as a journalist for the gourmet magazine Gestgjafinn. Dominique is a founding member of Slow Food Reykjavík, in 2001, and she has been the president of the convivium since 2008. She is as well known member of the board for Slow Food in the Nordic Countries, and a board member of the Association of Icelandic Organic Consumers. In the autumn of 2012, she entered her latest role, when she joined the board of the National Consumers Association.

Can you protect nature through urban planning? | Halldóra Hreggviðsdóttir | TEDxReykjavík
Halldóra talks of the strength that is inherent in the cooperation between residents and specialists in finding solutions to urban organisation, and traces the success of such cooperation in the town of Garðabær, Iceland. There, a major challenge, the protection of a lake, was turned into an opportunity and a new method was used - one which promotes nature as well as supporting the quality of life of local residents.
Halldóra Hreggviðsdóttir was the project manager in the development of the master plan for Urriðaholt. She has masters' degrees in Engineering - Economic Systems and Geology from Stanford University and has worked as a consultant on various projects, many related to regional development and sustainable land-use planning. She believes in the power of interdisciplinary teams and community consulting and sees mutual cooperation as being the key to solve environmental challenges we face.

Crowd Visioning - Power and Potential: Bjarni S. Jónsson at TEDxReykjavík
Bjarni speaks about the process and potential of harnessing human energy through bringing a crowd mentally to a collective desired state at the same time and venue. He outlines the prerequisites for bringing the vision of the crowd to life through combining three critical spheres: The physical, heart and electronic.
Bjarni Snæbjörn Jonsson is a management consultant and social entrepreneur, and focuses primarily on large-scale human system change and evolution. Bjarni has a Cand Oecon degree from the University of Iceland, and an MBA from University of Michigan Ross School of Business and is currently a Doctoral Candidate at the Adizes Graduate School in California. His doctoral research is on the significance of Citizen Communicative Engagement in Social Issues, and how that relates to conscious evolution of human social systems. Since 1995, Bjarni has consulted with organisations in all sectors within the private and public sector. He works primarily with Boards and CEOs of his clients, assisting in management of total organization change and development.
In his approach Bjarni's philosophy is that all human systems are in essence living systems and operate as such. From the start of his consulting career, he has applied the theory of Corporate Lifecycles as well as other systemic theories and approaches with the mission to develop organizations and human systems in line with their capacity for change.

Music in Space: Úlfur Hansson at TEDxReykjavík
What most classical or traditional instruments have in common is that they emanate vibrations in three dimensions. According to musician Úlfur Hansson, a vibrating three dimensional body is far more interesting than the two dimensional membrane of what we call a speaker. Physical computing allows us to actuate the world around us, with any kind of gestures. This opens up new possibilities in the world of electronic music as an acoustic art form.
Úlfur began his studies in New Media at the Iceland Academy of the Arts in 2008 and has since then published two solo albums, Sweaty Psalms and White Mountain. Instrument design and development has been a big part of Úlfur's composition lately. He recently received the President of Iceland's Award for Innovation for his instrument OHM, an electromagnetic harp.
