Creepy Alchemy Houses in Prague
Hey guys! One thing I love about Prague is its connection to alchemy - there's magic, secrecy, drugs, and yes, the Elixir of Life!
Edward Kelley was the official alchemist of Emperor Rudolf II, who lived in Prague. Kelley lived in the tower and, in his underground lair, experimented with various magic mushrooms to make Rudolf painkillers and to try and create life from a homunculus (clay human figure). What a time in history! I hope you enjoy this sneak peak into Prague's alchemy!

Speculum Alchemiae Prague- August 2019
Hidden in the historical center of Prague you will find a ground floor studio sporting portraits, books and assorted curiosities. The hide of the last black bear to be hunted in the outskirts of Prague lies on the floor. The real treasure is yet to come.
Locate the small statue in the library and give it a twist. A secret door will open down onto a narrow set of stairs, which leads to an underground laboratory sprawling beneath.
This underground space, re-discovered after the massive flood of 2002, contains the equipment and the crucible used (supposedly) to turn lead into gold. A mummified crocodile hangs from the ceiling: the alchemists used to refer to it as a “dragon” to inspire awe in their visitors.
While the museum is a re-creation, a bit gimmicky, and the trip through the secret door down into the basement is done with a tour guide it is nonetheless an unusual journey into Prague’s occult history.
This was the place where experiments were conducted, hidden from the eyes of the inquisition: for good measure, a tunnel (the beginning of which is shown during the guided visit) led directly from the laboratory to a safe escape in the woods out of the city… alchemists can never be too careful.

Speculum Alchimiae - Alchemical Lab and Subterranean Tunnels
First written references about the stone area at the current location of the museum date back to 900 AD, which means this house is probably the second oldest building in Prague.
...According to written accounts, there was an herbal pharmacy in the 15th century where alchemists sold their potions and elixirs. In the 16th century, the house became a place where Emperor Rudolf II established his alchemical laboratory and invited many famous alchemists to work.
...Alchemical workshops were discovered under the building, and also underground tunnels that connected the three most important places in the city - Prague Castle, the Old Town Hall and Barracks.
...A lot of legends are tied to this house. The most famous tells of a goat's flaming chariot that used to emerge in front of this house..

Múzeum alchýmie. Praha.

The SECRET ALCHEMY LAB in Prague – Czech Republic
If you are into dark tourism, visiting the alchemy museum ‘Speculum Alchemiae’ is a must! The secret lab was discovered after the flood in 2002. The alchemists aims were to create elixirs with the power to heal, to prolong life, to purify and to dissolve every other substance. But their main goal was to create the Philosopher’s Stone—this was not a stone but a wax, liquid, or powder—that was capable of turning base metals into gold. Did they hit the jackpot? Come and find out for yourself ;)
