Sails in Isla Mujeres
The crew of the Sea D take Guy in search of sailfish in the blue waters of Isla Mujeres, Mexico.
Day Trip to Isla Mujeres
Isla Mujeres is a beautiful, peaceful paradise just across the Bahia de Mujeres (Bay of Women) from Cancun Mexico. Isla Mujeres is more laid-back and tranquil than Cancun, but that doesn't mean there isn't plenty to do, it just means you can do nothing at all or fill your day with water sports, shopping, exploring and drinking in that special atmosphere that is Isla Mujeres.

Isla Mujeres
A place where time passes slowly and your dreams vacations become a reality.
Isla mujeres, which translate to Women’s Island is an island in the Caribbean sea, about 13 kilometres off the Yucatan Peninsula coast. The island is some 7 kilometres (4.3 mi) long and 650 metres (2,130 ft) wide.
Known for beautiful white sand beaches, calm crystal clear turquoise waters and the friendliest locals in the Mexican Caribbean. Isla’s diversity, from the fisherman, artists and musicians to divers, chefs and ex-pats, make up a community unlike any other. With the beauty of the Caribbean, the heritage of the Mayans, and the easygoing charm of the people, Isla Mujeres has become a haven for people from all over the world.
Isla Mujeres offers a wide variety of tempting options for beach lovers, and is a relative bargain. Snorkel with tropical fish amid coral reefs, skim the blue waters by kayak or boat, or windsurf along the shores of soft, sandy beaches. On land, you can sunbathe, dine on seafood, dance to Latin rhythms, tour on a moped or belly up to the bar for fresh, delicious drinks.
Places to go:
Fisherman’s Cooperative:
The local fisherman's cooperative offers snorkeling tours to various sites, including Isla Contoy and the reef off Playa Garrafón, and it does whale-shark outings as well.
Punta Sur:
At the island's southernmost point you’ll find a lighthouse, a sculpture garden and the worn remains of a temple dedicated to Ixchel, Maya goddess of the moon and fertility. Various hurricanes have pummeled the ruins over time and there’s now little to see other than the sculpture garden, the sea and Cancún in the distance. Taxis from town cost about M$105.
Playa Norte:
Once you reach Playa Norte, the island’s main beach, you won’t want to leave. Its warm, shallow waters are the color of blue raspberry syrup and the beach is crushed coral. Unlike most of the island's east coast, Playa Norte is safe for swimming and the water is only chest deep even far from shore.
Isla Mujeres Turtle Farm:
Although they're endangered, sea turtles are still killed throughout Latin America for their eggs and meat. In the 1980s, efforts by a local fisherman led to the founding of this tortugranja (turtle farm), 5km south of town, which safeguards breeding grounds and protects eggs.
If you’re coming from the bus stop, bear right at the ‘Y’ just beyond Hacienda Mundaca’s parking lot (the turn is marked by a tiny sign). The farm is easily reached from town by taxi (M$60).

What a day this was! Lately, we've been wanting to do more tours in the Cancun area, so we got together with My Trish Advisor to set up a bucket list tour - Swimming with Whale Sharks!! To book your tour with Trish, head on over to
The tour starts in Cancun where you board a boat that takes you for a short boat ride over to Isla Mujeres. The relatively-calm ride is breathtaking with water consisting of shades of blue, green, and turquoise. AMAZING!!
If you're wondering what to do in Cancun, Mexico, this is definitely a tour that's worth considering. But before you book it, you should be aware that it does come with some drawbacks... Depending on where they're feeding at the time, it can be a very long boat ride out to see the whale sharks. For us, it was an hour and 20 minutes each way. Additionally, don't expect to be the only boat out there - this is a very popular tour and many people are trying to have the same experience. Unfortunately, that also means that you won't have a lot of time to swim with the whale sharks since everybody has to take turns.
With that said and expectations tempered, this is one once-in-a-lifetime experience! Being in the water with the worlds biggest sharks is incredible!
If you're visiting Mexico, you also MUST check out the beautiful Isla Mujeres! It's crystal clear water and soft sand beaches (free of seaweed, I might add) are a dream! This tour killed two birds with one stone...and it almost killed Maddie too. Not actually, but she did get very seasick. A good reminder to take Dramamine!
After the whale shark experience, we stopped by Isla Mujeres for a little while - our first time at the beautiful island. Our guides whipped up some tasty ceviche and we enjoyed the motion-free water and soft sand - Maddie was especially relieved!
We're going to have to come back to Isla Mujeres very soon. Since it's so close to Cancun and our home in Puerto Morelos, it's a really easy day trip for us.

Whale Shark Excursion - Isla Mujeres, Mexico - July 27, 2017 (UW-FILM)
On July 27, 2017, my fiancé and I were able to set out on this awesome whale shark excursion. We chartered our excursion with Dressel Divers Playa Del Carmen, and headed out for about an hour or so before we spotted a large pod of whale sharks off the north east corner of Isla Mujeres. On this particular day there were over 150+ whale sharks that were visible at the surface.
Once we arrived, there were swarms of boats hovering around, and each boat could have 2 divers accompanied by one 1 guide in the water for 2-3 minutes for a personal session with 1 or more whale sharks. We both got to experience 3 to 4 snorkel sessions with the largest fish in the sea.
After the whale shark portion of the excursion, we headed back to the crystal clear waters of Isla Mujeres for the customary fresh ceviche served while relaxing in the water.
A special shout out goes to Under Water Film (UW-Film) for this video production and the crew for being excellent guides during our experience. Enjoy!

Incredible place to dive!

Swimming with Whale Sharks in Isla Mujeres, Mexico
Make sure you watch in 1080p!
Swimming with whale sharks in Isla Mujeres, Mexico was one of the most incredible experiences we've ever had! They are largest fish in the world - the ones we swam with were 27 feet and 42 feet.
Want more information? Check out how you can do this experience by clicking the link below:
How do you get to Isla Mujeres?
Fly into the Cancun airport. Take a taxi or Uber 20-30 mins ride to the ferry terminal. The ferry ride is about 20-30 mins to the island. Uber in Mexico is great because it is usually half the price of taxis, however they are not well liked by the taxis for this reason. You will have to walk a short distance away from the taxi pick-up zone to get an Uber.
How do you book it?
Compare dive shops, they are similar in pricing just depends on what you want to do besides the whale shark diving. Boats depart from the main dock.
What to expect when diving with whale sharks?
You meet at the shop and walk or get a short ride to the dock. Multiple dive shops will use the same boat to get out to the whale shark area, it is not guaranteed to see sharks but the boats will try their best to find them. The boats line up to take turns and you jump in and swim with these majestic giants, usually get at least two opportunities to swim with them.
How long does the tour take?
A half to full day depending on number of people on the tour and location of the whale sharks.
When can you swim with whale sharks?
June 1 through September 15
How much does it cost to swim with whale sharks?
As of 2018, $125 USD.
What should you bring?
Swimwear, Towel, Sunscreen, Sunglasses, Sun protection, Water, Camera
2T2T TIPS
Book ahead. Limited number of swimmers per day. Due to poor weather, the dock can close and not allow any boats to depart. Give yourselves a couple days on the island to maximize your opportunity for the tour.
What else can you do nearby?
Scuba dive the famous Underwater Museum of Art
Rent a golf cart and explore the island.
Relax on the beach.
Eat and drink.
Isla Mujeres 2 - Giant Parrot Fish - thousands of minnows & more!

About an hour by van and we were in Cancun, and another hour and we arrived at Isla Mujeres.

Cancun Is Safe!!
Cancun is the 'build it and they will come' tourist destination. The hotel zone is lined with all inclusive resorts and hotels, shopping centers have the most exclusive shops from around the world along with North American staples like Walmart.
A short distance off shore is Isla Majures, laid back and quaint with colorful fishing boats and small shops catering to tourists.
Cancun has struggled recently with hurricane damage, swine flu and the economic down turn.

Find your Paradise - Isla Holbox or Isla Mujeres | #13 Mexico
With Isla Holbox we found the relaxation capital. Punta Coco was so close to nature and almost unrealistically beautiful. It was so wonderful to lie in the fine sand under the natural shade of the palm trees, gaze at the little waves and let our minds dream off.
Isla Mujeres on the other hand was pretty different. Its beaches definitely had more people but it also offered a lot more action. You could rent a golf cart and drive all around the island. At its south tip there was a nice snorkel spot and the diving was pretty amazing.
When we planed our trip to Mexico we didn’t know if we should stay on Isla Holbox or on Isla Mujeres. Fortunately, we are on a world trip and therefore had enough time to visit both islands. But for all of you who only have time for one island we hope this video will help you decide.
When we took a stopover in Cancún in between those two islands we didn’t stay in a luxury hotel. We stayed at a convenient hostel in the center, but enjoyed the best brunch ever at a luxury hotel for only 22 USD per person ????
Our trip through Mexico starts now and we will explore more about the Maya culture, the natural wonders of Mexico, its little colonial towns and much more! Subscribe to our channel so you won’t miss the next video. And explore our other channels:

Journey of Heart Vision in Isla Mujeres by TJTran
This video is a gift I created for my friends & family. It is apart of my journey (ME) travelling through Isla Mujeres island to find my sense of self worth & heal myself by learning alternative solutions to manage fibromyalgia. The photos were my everyday vision I experienced through my heart.
